Does anyone else use subtitles all the time?

So since I was a teen I use subtitles when watching tv constantly.
I was watching a dvd at my dads when I was a teen and he said ' why have you got subtitles on?' And it only clicked then that it's not the norm.

I know that it is usually for people hard of hearing but I just feel content knowing I can read what they are saying. If someone has a strong accent I always know I can read what they are saying.

People even say how can you read and watch? Well I take a second to glance at the words then take it in and it's easy to follow the story still.

I've not stopped since my teens and my partner is used to it now.

Does anyone else rely on subtitles?

Yes — nothing wrong with my hearing but actors often mumble and background music is often too loud. Also DH likes to talk over the TV Confused. So subtitles are a great help.

PheasantsNest · 03/10/2021 22:55

Only if it's a programme where everyone is muttering.

TheCategoryIs · 03/10/2021 22:55

Love subtitles! I like spotting the errors. Half way through a programme a character’s name will change its spelling.

I like the TV on very low.

My partner gets a bit annoyed when I am laughing at jokes on comedy shows before they’ve been said though.

FVFrog · 03/10/2021 22:58

Me! Always have them on, semi detached house so means I can have volume lower

MaenadsJustWannaHaveFun · 03/10/2021 22:59

No, they really piss me off, especially if it's football or whatever and the top part of the field gets covered with text.

Also, the subtitles often give away the answer on quiz shows, which makes me frankly stabby.

They are always on for a deaf family member, if present, but I usually wander off as it's so irritating.

NotMyCat · 03/10/2021 23:07

I also use them on YouTube
The Welsh twins YouTube channel is somehow funnier with subtitles because it has things like
"Twins bickering"
"No idea"
"Twin language"
Grin

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 03/10/2021 23:25

I do it. BBC programmes are the worst for stygian rooms full of shitty mood music and pensive mumbling with their faces turned away from the camera.

DP hates them but tolerates it on films if I genuinely can't make out what they are saying. It makes his need to talk through things slightly less life shortening than it would be otherwise.

Coffeeonmytoffee · 03/10/2021 23:26

All the time.

Pippapet · 03/10/2021 23:34

Yes, I do this. I get more out of a program on a subconscious level, and faster, if I've read the actual words they are saying on the subtitles.

I wonder if it's linked to being a good reader/speed reader. I was (not so much now due to time constraints these days) a voracious reader growing up and always had to have something to read or I felt edgy, eg I couldn't eat breakfast, queue up or wait anywhere without having something to read. I feel secure in seeing the spoken words written down somehow, but not in a deliberate or conscious way. It just cements what I am seeing on screen. I haven't really thought about it before except when DH points it out (he is not keen on having subtitles on).

Same. I read everything without realising it and resorted to the yellow pages when all my books were packed for a move as a child. An average paperback takes me about an hour to read Blush
CuteGirlsWatchMeEatEther · 03/10/2021 23:40

I used to watch films/tv on mute with the subtitles on. I hate noise. I now watch things with sound on because i don’t want to be a PIA to others

CuteGirlsWatchMeEatEther · 03/10/2021 23:42

@RainCloude

Yes for American, Scottish and Liverpudlian actors
You struggle with all American accents? Hmm
LaurieFairyCake · 03/10/2021 23:42

Always.

Mumbling bastards.

ENUNCIATE you cunts !

Justcashnosweets · 03/10/2021 23:47

I have them on all the time as I hate the tv being on too loud. Glad I'm not the only one!

SelkieQualia · 03/10/2021 23:52

I have ADHD, so subtitles are a life changer for me.

Feelingpoorlysick · 03/10/2021 23:57

Yes! For us it started when our ds was a baby, he'd be asleep in the living room with us in the eve and we'd have the volume really low. 6 years later we still have them on regularly!

Pippapet · 04/10/2021 16:21

Notmycat ha! Are you me? I'd have definitely read the Yellow Pages in that situation too. Probably would start by looking up my favourite type of shops like pet shops, cake shops and toy shops. Then I'd look to see what the most unusual/oddest type of business advertised was I could find. Then I'd look up businesses with my surname, or the surnames of people I know. I have endless capacity for entertainment from something/anything to read!

If I was stuck on a platform waiting for a train with nothing at all on hand to read for example, I would see how many different words I could make from one word on a platform advert. Or make anagrams of words. Or make names out of words. Or read the travel map on the wall, even if I knew the area. Etc...

I would literally read a brochure on concrete if it was the only thing left to read in a waiting room.

JovialNickname · 04/10/2021 16:47

Me, always. Sometimes the subtitles are not quite the same as the words that are spoken so they can be more illuminating / add a bit more depth. Plus I think the words represent the "real" production - as after all the actors are only speaking the original written script. In my opinion, by reading the subtitles you can engage with the production in its original form, rather than being a step removed (ie listening to people reading and interpreting a script through their own lens).

Bluesandtwos22 · 08/10/2021 08:59

We do and even my daughter now asks her lecturers to use the subtitle feature in online lectures.

I'm with you@LaurieFairyCake Grin

Insert1x20p · 08/10/2021 11:24

Yep- started using them when I watched The Wire as I couldn't understand the accents. Never looked back. Also, with things like the Harlan Coban adaptations, I much prefer subtitled to dubbed plus obviously things like Squid Game and I also like the Scandi dramas. Now watching Hollingdon Drive and there are no subtitles where I live (watching through iTunes). Total nightmare. That woman from the Motherland is a mutterer Grin

peridito · 08/10/2021 11:36

yes ,subtitles all the time ,find it easier to process the written word .

harry5 · 01/07/2022 10:26

I am using subscene subtitles and basically, subscenes is a site that gives quality subtitles for all kinds of shows, series, and videos.

maddy68 · 01/07/2022 10:53

Yes but I live in a Duffer country so I have English subtitles on in case I don't understand some words

DownNative · 01/07/2022 12:36

rainbowandglitter · 03/10/2021 17:19

No I've never used them. How do you watch what's going on if you're reading subtitles the whole time?

It's really easy! You can see the whole TV in one go, so can read and watch at the same time.

I use subtitles for TV and films due to lifelong hearing loss. As a result, my daughter will often put subtitles on Netflix even though she doesn't actually need them unlike myself.
