Does anyone else use subtitles all the time?

So since I was a teen I use subtitles when watching tv constantly.
I was watching a dvd at my dads when I was a teen and he said ' why have you got subtitles on?' And it only clicked then that it's not the norm.

I know that it is usually for people hard of hearing but I just feel content knowing I can read what they are saying. If someone has a strong accent I always know I can read what they are saying.

People even say how can you read and watch? Well I take a second to glance at the words then take it in and it's easy to follow the story still.

I've not stopped since my teens and my partner is used to it now.

Does anyone else rely on subtitles?

Yes and I hate when subtitles are not available! Feel like I miss lots of the dialogue without them!

RedSnail · 03/10/2021 17:29

Yes, I can’t follow what is happening without the subtitles so always use subtitles on tv and at the cinema. I have no hearing issues but have autism so I rely on seeing lips or subtitles to follow speech as I can’t distinguish it from background noise.

ChrisPriss · 03/10/2021 17:30

I use subtitles all the time and won't watch anything without them

Blueuggboots · 03/10/2021 17:30

My 10 year old does this all the time....drives me mad!!

thenightsky · 03/10/2021 17:30

Yes, me and DH both prefer subtitles, as does DD when she's here. So do most of my friends. We started as more and more actors seem unable to enunciate properly.

MrsKDB · 03/10/2021 17:31

Never. It would really annoy me.

emmathedilemma · 03/10/2021 17:31

My dad who claims he doesn’t have a problem with his hearing.
(He clearly does, he has the radio so loud it makes me ears bleed!)

purplemunkey · 03/10/2021 17:31

Yes, I do… but I have hearing loss and didn’t realise this for a long time. I had my hearing checked and now wear hearing aids. But I’m so used to using subtitles now I still have them on most of the time. Especially US programmes as the sound mix is always so off - REALLY loud action scenes and incidental music, with very soft SMf hard to hear dialogue. I agree it helps with accents too. I’m actually really annoyed when subtitles aren’t available, surely it’s basic accessibility?

ABoynamedsue2022 · 03/10/2021 17:32

I do!

People think it’s odd, but I can’t relax when watching something unless they are on,
You’re not alone

Gladioli23 · 03/10/2021 17:32

I do.

Reading takes me almost no time, and it means I don't have to worry about accents. I also struggle with how loud the background music of most programmes is, so I have to have them quite quiet and then the sound is not loud enough to easily hear speech. I wish you could choose your own balance between the backing music and speech.

ShaunaTheSheep · 03/10/2021 17:33

I do, for all the reasons given by previous posters. I'm not hard of hearing but I prefer to have them on.

samwitwicky · 03/10/2021 17:34

Wouldn't say I rely on them. But I also started using them in teens and watching tv without them feels alien to me

bigTillyMint · 03/10/2021 17:34

Sometimes - when they are mumbling or family are talking over the TV. My DD (22) introduced me to it Grin

user12123 · 03/10/2021 17:34

Yes all the time! I feel as though I can't concentrate otherwise.

Soubriquet · 03/10/2021 17:35

Yep. But I’m deaf and I can’t follow a program if it doesn’t have subtitles.

I can’t watch anything that doesn’t have it

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 03/10/2021 17:36

All the time. It started a couple of years ago when watching a movie by myself as I struggle with auditory processing. Then dh noticed and ever since everything is subtitled. I can actual understand what's happening now Smile

Cailleach · 03/10/2021 17:37

Yes, but then i am autistic and have delays in verbal processing, which is why I prefer them on.

PineapplePasta · 03/10/2021 17:37

I always have them on, hearing is fine but I feel I struggle to process the lines without them.

MrsScrubbingbrush · 03/10/2021 17:38

I do. I have tinnitus & high tone deafness so it makes life easier to follow subtitles.

MajorCarolDanvers · 03/10/2021 17:38

I did before I got hearing aids. Now I don't need to.

SleepingStandingUp · 03/10/2021 17:38

@rainbowandglitter

No I've never used them. How do you watch what's going on if you're reading subtitles the whole time?
How do you think deaf people watch TV?

If your literacy is quite poor / you're a slow reader then yes it might be an issue.

SilenceOfThePrams · 03/10/2021 17:39

Always on. Can watch more quietly, means I can check what I heard without rewinding, plus subtitles on something like Star Trek or live captioning are just silly and make me laugh.

NotMyCat · 03/10/2021 17:40

All the time. My parents did too so I guess I grew up with it
Helpful for mumbling programmes and ones where you turn up the talking then get deafened by music

Turtles4543 · 03/10/2021 17:40

Yes I think I started when my teen was a baby.

KateMcAllister · 03/10/2021 17:40

I do, unless it’s a comedy or a quiz as I find it ruins the jokes/question-answering!

Means you don’t miss things. Like if someone in the room coughs or talks over an important bit.
