Names that should come back

Inspired by the other thread, I was thinking today that Dawn is a name that is gentle and soothing - meaning and sound.

John, Peter and Paul - simple classic names.

I have a 10 year old Vanessa.

I think it’s names like David, Timothy, Simon and Steven for boys and Kelly, Rebecca, Jennifer, Amy, Deborah for girls that disappeared. I know multiples of all of those who were born in the 70s.

shreddednips · 26/09/2021 23:41

I love Vanessa, such a beautiful name. Sarah, Catherine, Louise and Ramona I also like for girls. Keen on Timothy, Robert, Michael and Matthew too.

RosesAndHellebores · 27/09/2021 07:21

I think names from 1960 are still a little too modern. I was born in 1960 and my class was: Sally, Jane, Cheryl, Lynn, Lorna, Susan, Charlotte, FIona, Helen, Jane, Denise, Beverly, Katherine, Gail, Amanda, Kim, Julia, Deborah, Elizabeth, Margaret, Hilary, Heather, Julia, Debbie, Drusilla (multiple Jane's, Helens, Deborah's,).

I think my mother's era will come first: Patricia, Barbara, Marion, Sylvia, Margaret, Daphne, Joan, Jean, Shirley, Gwen, Joy, Joyce, Margot, Marjorie, Phylis, etc. c1936

Names like John and Peter are already back, though still not common. As are other ‘30s names like Barbara, Marion, Daphne, Margot, etc.

Kanaloa · 27/09/2021 08:21

I’d love to see more babies called John & Michael, lovely names that should still be around. I really like Karen in sound but I don’t see that coming back any time soon.

TheMarzipanDildo · 27/09/2021 08:28

Rosemary

Famousfrays · 27/09/2021 08:32

Michael is in the top 100 names for England and Wales. It’s number 70 I think. John is also coming back.

FrogsAreMean · 27/09/2021 08:44

Nobody has mentioned Tina - it’s my name (born 1964).
Whenever I’ve been introduced to people you can guarantee they say, “that’s my dogs name” 😂

35andThriving · 27/09/2021 09:21

Sybil

FrenchBoule · 27/09/2021 09:42

Kenneth is back. A few of them in local primary school already 🙂

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 27/09/2021 10:26

Gary, we need more Gary's

emuloc · 27/09/2021 10:29

Hilda

35andThriving · 27/09/2021 10:33

Oh, I like Hilda. Fiz from Corrie has a Hilda in real life.

I also like Agnes but do think this enjoyed a bit more popularity due to Despicable Me.

I know a few 3 year olds called Margot. I love it.
RuthW · 27/09/2021 20:15

Loads of these names are already back.

Allthesefolks · 27/09/2021 20:24

Can’t move for Montys, Ralphs and Jaspers here! Also know some Margots and Maggies.

My mum and my auntie’s names are both mentioned here (born 50s) but I can’t get on board with using them these days yet.

There was a baby Ian on The Baby Club recently and it did make me chuckle Grin

Chicchicchicchiclana · 27/09/2021 20:28

Trevor. Don't know why but I really like this name (possibly association with a very dear friend who is early 50s and so probably not even common in his age group). But I like it.

Robert.

Bernard.

I also love Tracy!

Perhaps I just have really naff name loves.

Happenchance · 27/09/2021 20:32

Hilary
Shirley
Gail

RickOShay · 27/09/2021 20:32

Ds2’s middle name is Garry Grin
It’s a great name

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 27/09/2021 20:34

Bernadette. I have a 7 year old Bernadette and I'm either told how beautiful it is or how weird I am for naming her it Grin

Hullbilly · 27/09/2021 20:46

Winifred and Sylvia

CormoranStrike · 27/09/2021 21:53

Oh yes, Caroline - lovely name.

Cherrysoup · 27/09/2021 22:37

There are loads of these names in my school
Jasper
Kaspar
Rachel
Angela
David

Mrsfrumble · 27/09/2021 22:44

Gareth is name that deserves more love. And Clare; suffered from overkill in the late 70s when every other baby girl was named it, but it’s pretty, has a nice meaning and needs a comeback.

I loved in the southern USA a few years ago and Ian and Gavin were considered quite fashionable! I met a few little ones of each.

JazzyBBG · 27/09/2021 22:45

Lorraine.
Always liked it, not sure why!
