My absolute favourite is "We don't need no education", followed closely by "You're dressed to kill ... and guess who's dying?"

What are your favourites?

Oh I'm loving this thread. Lauryn Hill also great

I think most people will know 2 of the songs I posted but the first was Lemar ft. Shaughnessy, I'm not religious but the lyrics do capture how I feel about being alive

"Did you ever look into the night sky and wonder what you are
That it takes you many million light years to the nearest star
Do you believe there's a place for you that ain't made of bricks or stone
And it's a place that no one else can get to, a place they call a soul
Five billion years, we still don't know
Every theory's got a gaping hole
Here's the only certain thing I know
To get something from nothing is a miracle
Ain't nobody coming from the sky
All you are is deep inside
Like a feather on a wind of time
All blowing to the next destination"

Holy water cannot help you now,
A thousand armies couldn’t keep me out,
I don’t want your money, I don’t want your crown,
I’ve come to burn your kingdom down,
Holy water cannot help you now
I’ve come to burn your kingdom down
And no river and no lake can put the fire out
I’m gonna raise the stakes
I’m gonna smoke you out

Son, I’m thirty.
I only went with your mother ‘cos she’s dirty,
And I don’t have a decent bone in me
What you get is just what you see, yeah..

Happy Mondays, ‘Kinky Afro’.

Anything by Roddy Woomble...
.
“Gertrude Stein said "That's enough"” – Roseability—Idlewild

“I laugh at your conversational skills or lack of” – When I Argue I See Shapes – Idlewild

“I am the best message out of the rest of them
Are you all alone?” – I’m a Message – Idlewild

“A stable full of houses
A fully automatic washing machine
An armchair, whitewashing the walls
Existence isn't always everything” – There’s a Place for Everything – Idlewild (recognising the contribution of the younger Woomble there)

“You couldn't make it up, make it up
Begging to be hypnotised
Your silver hair is running down the length of your spine” – Same Things Twice – Idlewild

Fuckin' poet, this lad.

“Abandon your traditions
Watch them disappear one by one
And follow their direction
Between the moon and the sun
A new day has begun
Abandon your possessions
Watch them disappear one by one
Follow their direction
Between the bones and the trees and the moon and the sun
A new day has begun
I remember the day I heard it
The Impossible Song and the other songs
The tiny detail of every day
And nothing more to give away
And I trust my expectations
'Cause like good songs, they can always be sung
To the tune of another song
Abandon your ambitions
You're overwhelmed by what you haven't done
And it doesn't last for ever
Not even the moon and the sun
A new day has begun
Forget all those promises
That only fools remember
And you'll be dazzled by the dark
Troubled by the stars
Short on regret
Burnt by the sun
A new day has begun
I woke up early this morning
And the birds were singing their impossible songs
They have that notion every day
With plenty more than I can say
And I trust their expectations
And like good songs, they can always be sung
To the tune of another song”

The Arctic Monkeys' lyrics are often works of genius. I love the start of 'Fluorescent Adolescent':

You used to get it in your fishnets
Now you only get it in your night dress
Discarded all the naughty nights for niceness
Landed in a very common crisis

Again, it's partly the performance, but fabulous words as well.

Come stop your crying
It will be alright
Just take my hand
Hold it tight
I will protect you
From all around you
I will be here
Don't you cry

Phil Collins, You'll be in my heart

And so it is.
Just like you said it would be.
Life goes easy on me.
Most of the time.

You're like diamond and I'm like glass,
Like oil and water we always clash
(Long gone by Chris Cornell)

You said I must eat so many lemons
Coz I am so bitter
(Foundations by Kate nash)

Watch out for the medallion the diamonds are reckless,
Feels like a midget is hanging from my necklace
(Stand up by ludacris)

@Chikapu

And if a double decker bus crashes into us, to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die. And if a ten ton truck kills the both of us, to die by your side well the pleasure the privilege is mine.
This.

Policeman says, "Son, you can't stay here."
I said, "There's someone I'm waiting for if it's a day, a month, a year.
Gotta stand my ground even if it rains or snows.
If she changes her mind this is the first place she will go."

The man who can't be moved, The Script Smile

DoesHePlayTheFiddle · 16/09/2021 18:44

Leonard Cohen 'Take This Longing'

"Your body like a searchlight
My poverty revealed
I would like to try your charity
Until you cry, "Now you must try my greed"
And everything depends upon
How near you sleep to me

Just take this longing from my tongue
All the lonely things my hands have done
Let me see your beauty broken down
Like you would do
For one your love"

Seen a few people mention lyrics from A Rainy Night in Soho - The Pogues. Such a beautiful song and words. Sinead O'Conner's version of it stunning, have a look on You Tube if you're interested.

What do you get when you fall in love?
You get enough germs to catch pneumonia.
After you do he'll never phone ya
I'll never fall in love again

I'll Never Fall in Love Again - Bacharach & David, sung by the great Dionne Warwick

doadeer · 16/09/2021 18:48

Mother, mother
Everybody thinks we're wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply 'cause our hair is long
Oh, you know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today
Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Come on talk to me
So you can see
What's going on (What's going on)
