My absolute favourite is "We don't need no education", followed closely by "You're dressed to kill ... and guess who's dying?"

What are your favourites?

I found out quickly when I knew I should
That this world is made up of a brotherhood
Of man, whatever that means.

'If you're alive then why aren't you living? I want the world, I want the world' - Embrace

Quite possibly the best song lyrics ever written, insanely clever songwriting, Counting Crows - Mr. Jones

I was down at the New Amsterdam
Staring at this yellow-haired girl
Mr. Jones strikes up a conversation
With a black-haired flamenco dancer
You know she dances while his father plays guitar
She's suddenly beautiful
And we all want something beautiful
Man, I wish I was beautiful

So come dance this silence down through the morning
Shalalala la la la la, yeah..
Uh huh, yeah.. Cut up, Maria!
Show me some of them Spanish dances
And pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones
Believe in me, help me believe in anything
'Cause I wanna be someone who believes, yeah

[Chorus for Verse 1]
Mr. Jones and me tell each other fairy tales
And we stare at the beautiful women
"She's looking at you. Ah, no, no, she's looking at me."
Smiling in the bright lights, coming through in stereo
When everybody loves you, you can never be lonely.

[Verse 2]
Well, I'm gonna paint my picture
Paint myself in blue and red and black and gray
All of the beautiful colors are very, very meaningful
Yeah, well, you know gray is my favorite color
I felt so symbolic yesterday
If I knew Picasso, I would buy myself a gray guitar and play

[Chorus for Verse 2]
Mr. Jones and me look into the future
Yeah, we stare at the beautiful women
"She's looking at you. I don't think so. She's looking at me."
Standing in the spotlight, I bought myself a gray guitar
When everybody loves me, I will never be lonely

I'll never be lonely
Said I'm never gonna be lonely

[Verse 3]
I want to be a lion
Yeah, everybody wants to pass as cats
We all want to be big, big stars, yeah
But we got different reasons for that
Believe in me, 'cause I don't believe in anything
And I, I want to be someone to believe
To believe, to believe, yeah!

[Chorus for Verse 3]
Mr. Jones and me, stumbling through the barrio
Yeah, we stare at the beautiful women
"She's perfect for you, man, there's got to be somebody for me."
I want to be Bob Dylan
Mr. Jones wishes he was someone just a little more funky
When everybody loves you, ah son
That's just about as funky as you can be

[Chorus]
Mr. Jones and me, staring at the video
When I look at the television, I want to see me
Staring right back at me
We all want to be big stars
But we don't know why, and we don't know how
But when everybody loves me
I want to be just about as happy as I can be

[Outro]
Mr. Jones and me, we're gonna be big stars

Oh good choice, I adore this song, used to have it on 7" Vinyl but sadly it got broke when I moved - still gutted.

Just thought I would post the video - Adam Duritz just so charismatic

Paul McCartney and John Lennon wrote some of the best songs ever. Their story telling is brilliant. Eleanor Rigby being one of the best examples.

Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people

Eleanor Rigby
Picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window
Wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for?

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

Father McKenzie
Writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear
No one comes near
Look at him working
Darning his socks in the night when there's nobody there
What does he care?

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?
Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people

Eleanor Rigby
Died in the church and was buried along with her name
Nobody came
Father McKenzie
Wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave
No one was saved

All the lonely people (ah, look at all the lonely people)
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people (ah, look at all the lonely people)
Where do they all belong?

If you're not living on the edge, you take up too much room. - Reverend and The Makers

flibberyjibbery8 · 21/09/2021 18:16

There's a lot of great pink Floyd lyrics. Example :

We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl
Year after year
Running over the same old ground
What have we found?
The same old fears
Wish you were here

ellyeth · 23/09/2021 16:59

So remember when we were driving driving in your car
Speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

Tracy Chapman - Fast Car - such a sad song

pollywollydoodler · 23/09/2021 17:48

Tracy chapman is a great songwriter
Talking about a revolution
Sounds like a whisper..

pollywollydoodler · 23/09/2021 17:49

Was agreeing with @ellyeth ...

Whatsitbeen · 25/09/2021 18:01

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life
I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, but why
Why, why can't it be, oh, can't it be mine?

'Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in'

Leonard Cohen...

To build our nest we pecked feathers from our chest
Like a book tearing out every page
We weren’t to know that these feathers would grow
Into a beautiful cage

Beautiful Birds by Passenger

It’s only now I can listen to this without it drawing tears, this song so accurately summed up the demise of my marriage.

So come all ye full-time, small town heroes
Cast away your in-bred fears of
Standing out from all the rest
