My absolute favourite is "We don't need no education", followed closely by "You're dressed to kill ... and guess who's dying?"

What are your favourites?

What's it been, over a decade?
But it still smarts like it was four minutes ago
We know influenced each other totally
We only bruised each other even more so
Flinch - Alanis Morissette

With a face like this I won't break any hearts
And thinking like that I won't make any friends
Screw that, forget about that
I don't want to hear about anything like that
I've got nothing to do but hang around and get screwed up on you
Screamager - Therapy?

chocolateorangeinhaler · 16/09/2021 18:26

I know it's an old cliche to say
I feel I'm gonna die
And I hear it's goin' out to cry
So I'm gonna say some kind words to you
I like to wish you luck & hope
That life will be with someone else
Just like I though it would be with me
But I can't see...

Written by randy Edelman and sung by Karen carpenter.

And freedom, oh freedom, well that's just some people talkin'
Your prison is walking through this world all alone

The eagles.

Leaving at dawn
After I'm gone
Someone's gotta take my place
Running in the human race.

The carpenters- sailing on the tide.
More poignant as she died early in the morning at 32 after years of an eating disorder.

I love a slushy 70s ballad.

And you want to travel with her, and you want to travel blind
And then you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind

Leonard Cohen - Suzanne

WinniePig · 16/09/2021 18:29

Ha ha just checked the lyrics to You Know I’m No Good by Amy Winehouse. I thought I loved the lyrics “And sniffed me out like I was takeaway” and “Tear men down like Roger Moore”. Such fantastic images! But no…apparently the actual lyrics are “sniffed me out like I was Tanqueray” and “tear me down…” Just not the same…don’t like them as much ☹️ Also love the lyric from the Jeff Buckley song: “She’s the tear that hangs inside my soul forever…” I hope I’ve got that one right.

DFOD · 16/09/2021 18:29

Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changin' ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?

From Landslide by Stevie Nicks

  • “can I handle the seasons of my life”

We used to play pretend, give each other different names
We would build a rocket ship an' then we'd fly it far away
Used to dream of outer space, but now they're laughin' at our face
Sayin', "Wake up, you need to make money!," yeah
21 Pilots - Stressed Out

You are young and life is long, and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
Pink Floyd - Time

I plant the kind of kiss
That wouldn't wake a baby
On the self-same face
That wouldn't let me sleep
Mirrorball - Elbow

When my face is chamois creased
If you think I wink, I did
Laugh politely at repeats
Yeah, kiss me when my lips are thin
One day like this - Elbow

Straight to my head like the first cigarette of the day
Bones of you - Elbow

Infact everything Guy Garvey writes. A genius wordsmith who can write the purest lovesong.

Taking the blue pill only made you cry. And taking the red pill only made you forget why...

BertieBotts · 16/09/2021 18:30

It's not highbrow but I always love the line from Taylor Swift's Mine:

You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter

A whole story in that one line!

Phineyj · 16/09/2021 18:30

Yay, no-one got my favourite Billy Bragg quote!

Words can't mend this broken heart
But you can put the hoover round if yoy want to make a start

and

We passed very fast like ships in the night
Or cars in a contraflow system

and

I put you on a pedestal
They put you on the pill

Not sure of the song titles - album was A New England, I think.

Phineyj · 16/09/2021 18:30

Grr, if you want to make a start. Sorry.

TheRosesAreInBloom · 16/09/2021 18:32

@HelplessProcrastinator
I saw two shooting stars last night
I wished on them but they were only satellites
Is it wrong to wish on space hardware
I wish, I wish, I wish you'd care

I was going to post this…the late great Kirsty McColl ❤️

DuckonaBike · 16/09/2021 18:32

Lots of brilliant ones here. I love all LowbrowVictoriana’s suggestions, and also all the Taylor Swift ones - she is an incredible lyricist.

Just have to add:

I’d really like to live beside you, baby
I love your body, and your spirit, and your clothes

From Leonard Cohen, ‘First we take Manhattan.’

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 16/09/2021 18:33

And the Mississippi's mighty
But it starts in Minnesota
At a place that you could walk across
With five steps down
And I guess that's how you started
Like a pinprick to my heart
But at this point you rush right through me
And I start to drown

WinniePig · 16/09/2021 18:33

Also the lyrics to Ex Factor by Lauryn Hill. I just find them really honest and heartfelt.

dryasaboner · 16/09/2021 18:33

The sink is full of dishes she's got little fishes on the brain oh my dogs been itching, itching in the kitchen once again

trappedsincesundaymorn · 16/09/2021 18:34

The whole of "Just like Fred Astaire" - James.

"I don't have to sell my soul, he's already in me" - Adored - Stone Roses

"From a whisper through a megaphone" - Nothing is as it seems - Pearl Jam

BigcatLittlecat · 16/09/2021 18:34

I will give you my finest hour,
The one I spent watching you shower.
Blondie

ParkheadParadise · 16/09/2021 18:35

When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of a storm
There's a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
💚💚💚💚💚💚

ChequerBoard · 16/09/2021 18:35

I have two favourites, first one needs to be heard with the Cruel Sea guitar riff really:

"Oh, it ain't no fun no more
I don't know what to say
The honeymoon is over, baby
It's never gonna be that way again"

And secondly A New England, which I know is really a Billy Bragg song but for me will forever belong to the incomparable Kirsty MacColl:

"I was twenty-one years when I wrote this song
I'm twenty-two now, but I won't be for long
People ask me when will I grow up to understand
Why the girls I knew at school are already pushing prams

I loved you then as I love you still
Though I put you on a pedestal, you put me on the pill
I don't feel bad about letting you go
I just feel sad about letting you know"

JamieFrasersSassenach · 16/09/2021 18:35

Dire straits - Romeo & Juliet

And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be
All I do is keep the beat, the bad company
All I do is kiss you, through the bars of a rhyme

Pulp - I spy

My favourite parks are car parks
Grass is something you smoke
Birds are something you shag
Take your "Year in Provence" and shove it up your ass

FamBae · 16/09/2021 18:36

Oh, kiss me like a final meal
Yeah, kiss me like we die tonight

One day like this - Elbow

DonEmmanuelsDingleberries · 16/09/2021 18:36

It seems like everywhere I go, the more I see the less I know.

Say Hey (I Love You) by Michael Franti

IntermittentParps · 16/09/2021 18:36

@TheWeeDonkey

Don't be a hard rock when you really are a gem Baby girl, respect is just the minimum.

Lauryn Hill - Do Wop (that thing)

I love the whole song, but thats my favorite line

Reminded me of 'To Zion' by the same artist, which still stops me in my tracks. It is partly her wonderfully warm and passionate vocal performance, admittedly, but the lyrics are so proud and tender.
trappedsincesundaymorn · 16/09/2021 18:36

"the past was yours but the future is mine, you're all out of time" She Bangs the Drums -The Stone Roses

I like
