My absolute favourite is "We don't need no education", followed closely by "You're dressed to kill ... and guess who's dying?"

What are your favourites?

@Chikapu

And if a double decker bus crashes into us, to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die. And if a ten ton truck kills the both of us, to die by your side well the pleasure the privilege is mine.
Yes this!!!
FancySomeChips · 17/09/2021 18:19

Drop an album,
Drop a baby,
But I’ll never drop the ball.

Just feel it’s a bit ‘girl power’ and a middle finger at people that can’t see how amazing working mums are.

Also…. Fuck the government and fuck Boris.

Because he’s an arse and I hate him. And his party.

And… standing on the platform, watching you go.
It’s like no other pain I’ve ever known.
To love someone so much but go have no control.
You said you want to see the world, and I said go.

Because, this was me, with my daughter’s dad. And he went. And never looked back.

TitoMojito · 17/09/2021 18:22

I don’t want to start any blasphemous rumours but I think that god's got a sick sense of humour and when I die I expect to find him laughing.

'She saw the barkeep, said ‘O God he can’t be dead!’ / Stag said, ‘Well just count the holes in the mother fuckers head!'

@MorriseysGladioli

And if you have to leave I wish that you would just leave 'Cause your presence still lingers here And it won't leave me alone

These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase

When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me...
My Immortal- Evanesence. Spelt it wrong I think

I forgot about this song beautiful
Atla · 17/09/2021 18:24

Has anyone done the Time Adventure song from adventure time yet?

Time is an illusion that helps things make sense
So we're always living in the present tense.
It feels unforgiving when a good thing ends
But you and I will always be back then

Singing - will happen, happening, happened. Will happen, happening, happened, will happen, happening happened. You and I will always be back then.

Better when sung by BMO of course. I was definitely unexpectedly misty eyed the first time I watched that with the kids.

"My life swam around me
It took a look and drowned me in its own existence"

The Jam, Down in the tube station at midnight

MorriseysGladioli · 17/09/2021 18:27

It is.
I couldn't find a particular line, because it's all superb. Sad though.

lilywillywoo · 17/09/2021 18:27

@IglesiasPiggl

On the National Express there's a jolly hostess Selling crisps and tea She'll provide you with drinks and theatrical winks For a sky-high fee Mini-skirts were in style when she danced down the aisle Back in '63 (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah) But it's hard to get by when your arse is the size Of a small country

National Express, Divine Comedy
That song always makes me smile.

Was just going to put this. Love this song, especially 'when your arse is the size of of a small countreeee!'

“I saw two shooting stars last night
I wished on them - but they were only satellites
It’s wrong to wish on space hardware
I wish, I wish, I wish you cared”
Billy Bragg - A New England

Dressed up like a car crash
Your wheels are turning but you're upside down
U2 stay so faraway so close

Betty12 · 17/09/2021 18:31

A few more

"She doesn't have anything you'd want to steal, well nothing you could touch" from Pretty in Pink

And one for the Dolly fans from Here you come again
"Here you come again
Lookin' better than a body has a right to
And shakin' me up so that all I really know
Is here you come again and here I go…"

and a bit weird, but I love this from Matilda
"But nobody else is gonna put it right for me
Nobody but me is gonna change my story
Sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty"

Everything under the sun is in tune
But the sun is eclipsed by the moon

Angrywife · 17/09/2021 18:32

Now I've swung back down again
It's worse than it was before
If I hadn't seen such riches
I could live with being poor

Think it's so so poignant to today's society

SciFiScream · 17/09/2021 18:33

Today I stumbled from my bed
With thunder crashing in my head
My pillow still wet
From last night's tears
And as I think of giving up
A voice inside my coffee cup
Kept crying out
Ringing in my ears
Don't cry, daddy
Daddy, please don't cry
Daddy, you've still got me and little Tommy
And together we'll find a brand new mommy
Daddy, daddy, please laugh again
Daddy, ride us on your back again
Oh, daddy, please, don't cry
Why are children always first
To feel the pain and the hurt the worst?
It's true but somehow
It just don't seem right
'Cause every time I cry, I know
It hurts my little children, so I wonder
Will it be the same tonight?
Don't cry, daddy
Daddy, please don't cry
Daddy, you've still got me and little Tommy
And together we'll find a brand new mommy
Daddy, daddy, please laugh again
Daddy, ride us on your back again
Oh, daddy, please, don't cry
Oh, daddy, please don't cry

Don't cry Daddy, Elvis.

My Dad played this a lot after my Mum died...

Truly Madly Deeply - Yoke Lore (better than Savage Garden)

I wanna stand with you on a mountain
I wanna bathe with you in the sea
I wanna lay like this forever
Until the sky falls down on me

And when the stars are shining brightly in the velvet sky
I'll make a wish, send it to heaven and make you want to cry
The tears of joy for all the pleasure and the certainty
That we're surrounded by the comfort and protection
Of the highest powers
In lonely hours
The tears devour you

DonaPatrizia · 17/09/2021 18:34

Breathless by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. It captured how I felt when my husband was very ill and I was scared I’d lose him.

It's up in the morning, it's on the downs
A little white clouds like gambolling lambs
And I am breathless over you
And the red-breasted robin beats his wings
His throat, it trembles when he sings
For he is helpless before you
And the happy hooded bluebells bow
And bend their heads all a-down
Heavied by the early morning dew
At the whispering stream, at the bubbling brook
The fishes leap up to take a look
For they are breathless over you
Still your hands and still your heart
For still your face comes shining through
And all the morning glows anew
Still your mind and still your soul
For still the fire of our love is true
And I am breathless without you
The wind circles among the trees
And it bangs about of the new made leaves
For it is breathless without you
And the fox chases the rabbit around
And the rabbit hides beneath the ground
For he is defenseless without you
The sky of daytime dies away
And all the earthly things, they stop to play
For we are all breathless without you
I listen to my juddering bones
And the blood in my veins, the wind in my lungs
And I am breathless without you
Still your hands and still your heart
For still your face comes shining through
And all the morning glows anew
Still your soul and still your mind
For still the fire of our love is true
And I am breathless without you

Almost all of the lines in The Living Years by Mike and the Mechanics

Every generation
Blames the one before
And all of their frustrations
Come beating on your door
I know that I'm a prisoner
To all my Father held so dear
I know that I'm a hostage
To all his hopes and fears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years
Oh, crumpled bits of paper
Filled with imperfect thought
Stilted conversations
I'm afraid that's all we've got
You say you just don't see it
He says it's perfect sense
You just can't get agreement
In this present tense
We all talk a different language
Talking in defence
Say it loud (say it loud), say it clear (oh say it clear)
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late (it's too late) when we die (oh when we die)
To admit we don't see eye to eye
So we open up a quarrel
Between the present and the past
We only sacrifice the future
It's the bitterness that lasts
So don't yield to the fortunes
You sometimes see as fate
It may have a new perspective
On a different day
And if you don't give up, and don't give in
You may just be okay
So say it loud, say it clear (oh say it clear)
You can listen as well as you hear
Because it's too late, it's too late (it's too late) when we die (oh when we die)
To admit we don't see eye to eye
I wasn't there that morning
When my Father passed away
I didn't get to tell him
All the things I had to say
I think I caught his spirit
Later that same year
I'm sure I heard his echo
In my baby's new born tears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years
Say it loud, say it clear (oh say it clear)
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late (it's too late) when we die (it's too late when we die)
To admit we don't see eye to eye
So say it, say it, say it loud (say it loud)
Say it clear (come on say it clear)

If fashion is your game, then when you’re naked I guess you must be unemployed - Underwear by Pulp
So many pulp songs I could choose! Underwear is one of my favourites.

I don't believe in an interventionist god
But I know darlin' that you do
But if I did I would kneel down and ask him not to intervene when it came to you
Oh not to touch a hair on your head, leave you as you are
If he felt he had to direct you, then direct you into my arms
Into my arms...

Nick Cave. My favourite opening line of any song ever, mainly because it was so unexpected the first time I heard it Grin

SpacemanDad · 17/09/2021 18:38

The trouble with the straight and the narrow
Is it's so thin, I keep sliding off to the side

From “The straight and the narrow” by Spiritualized

SciFiScream · 17/09/2021 18:38

All the lyrics in "Where do you go to my lovely?"

I won't post them all. It's probably getting too much when I post an entire song.

He ducked back down the alleyway with some Roly poly little bat faced girl
That always makes me smile

"You will never understand
How it feels to live your life
With no meaning or control
And with nowhere left to go
You are amazed that they exist
And they burn so bright whilst you can only wonder why"

Another from common people. I love this.
