Things you thought were normal/harmless until joining mumsnet

(Lighthearted )
lots of things that I thought were quite normal /fine/harmless before I joined MM seem to be quite abhorrent to a large percentage of posters. I often find myself wondering about whether my perceived normal is actually the minority. Some examples

Home made food or cakes - I bloody love home made cakes and think they are always nicer than shop bought - my first thoughts when offered one is usually yum, a cake! I've never given a moments thought to whether the person owns cats or dogs or has a hygeine certificate.

Ensuite bathrooms - I've got an ensuite bathroom. It's used for any instance where you may need a toilet. Apparently this is very very wrong.

Eating carbs

Bayliss and Harding toiletries - I would not be offended by this as a gift unless it was from my husband

(I'm with you on Thorntons though - they are nasty)

Answering the door to someone - if I see ex criminals selling stuff door to door, I dont answer, otherwise I dont have a problem with answering the door, and i get on with all of my neighbours.

Speaking to and socialising with work colleagues - i speak to, socialise (outside of work) and am friends with most of my work colleagues. I'd count many of them as friends. We buy each other birthday cards and presents and sometimes bring in cakes. (See point 1)

What are the things you've been educated on since joining MN?

@stoppochoco.You've just listed pretty much everything I was going to!😂😂😂

Antsinyourpanta · 17/09/2021 18:16

We don’t have a poo knife and I’d never heard of one, or even imagined the need for one, until I came on MN.

Eh???Confused I've not come across this (I'm not sure I want to!!)

That many posters are puerile and love to hate their parents and in laws.

@HerRoyalRisesAgain

Pet bowels in the dishwasher

Just its bowels? What do you do with the rest of the pet? Shock

Ooops 😂🤣 I guess I have to agree agree with the majority of MNs on that! Bowls!
Spudlet · 17/09/2021 18:18

Gaming! DH and I are both gamers. This means that we are both incurably stuck in a state of arrested development and are under no circumstances relationship material. We are probably neglecting our family in order to foolishly spend our time on such childish pursuits, too. Tut tut.

AnnieSnap · 17/09/2021 18:22

@ILoveShula

Leave your pet's bowels where they are. The pet can empty it's own bowels
😂🤣 okay!
Harls1969 · 17/09/2021 18:25

We have had a conservatory built and we are having more building work in the garden. We had several BBQs over the summer - without putting a notice in the local paper so that people could shut their windows etc. Sometimes I do things just because I know the MN massive would disapprove Grin

mamabear715 · 17/09/2021 18:28

I don't know whether I dare admit this.. I have never been IN a Joules or Boden shop.. :-0

Antsinyourpanta · 17/09/2021 18:30

@mamabear715

I reached peak MN last weekend and bought a boden coat. (In a charity shop....so I havent yet frequented either of those shops either!🤣)

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER

Homemade cakes at school fairs etc. - anything baked in the oven is fine by me.

Sharing towels with dh - we always have. I’ve never been able to understand how finicky people can be about sharing towels with some you (presumably) have sex with.

I do often wonder how the more hygiene-obsessed MNers ever manage to have sex at all. Do they go over his bits first with Dettol and a Brillo pad?

🤣🤣🤣
Bleachmycloths · 17/09/2021 18:37

We are supposed to scoop up spiders and put them in the garden. I hate them. I splat the little bastards and wipe up their remains with a piece of kitchen roll.
Okay, firing squad, load your weapons, aim and fire 😄

tickledtiger · 17/09/2021 18:41

@Bleachmycloths doesn’t the feeling of them crunching when you kill them gross you out?

I throw spiders out of the window, feeling them squish would be worse…

Susysue10 · 17/09/2021 18:41

@bonfireheart

What is a "kill shelter"?
They are disgusting horrible places, found in Spain (perrera), Ireland and other countries where animal welfare is absolutely non existent. The conditions for eg stray dogs are horrific, they do not care for the animals nor get vet treatment nor try to find them suitable loving homes. Instead they treat them abusively and in a short time, kill them. There are animal charities in this country that have links in these countries eg save our spaniels Spain who pay to get the dogs out of the kill stations, get them vet treatment and temporary Foster home before fundraising to get the dogs into the UK and find wonderful loving homes for them, after they have been assessed in Foster homes. They are truly marvellous and have saved many a poor animal from a horrendous fate ( many of the dogs have been abused by previous owners and then thrown into the perreras....absolutely disgusting....

MN makes me want a hot tub. Never gave them a second thought before.

mumwon · 17/09/2021 18:43

@ancientgran my dh hankies disappeared he keeps buying them I think the washing machine eats them Wink

Angie1403 · 17/09/2021 18:43

@Revertion

Men watching porn

The SNP

@Revertion please explain further! lol
Usuallyhappycamper · 17/09/2021 18:46

I have a child with a popular name. MN seems to only allow you to call them something not in the top 500.

I would love a fire pit and a conservatory.

I use rolled up newspaper or a magazine 🕷

I didn't even know there was a Boden shop Shock Thought it was all online

I've bought a couple of things from them, one being a Breton top a few years ago. Still looks like new and washes up surprisingly well. Also have a scarf from Joules. Their clothes however, are a bit...questionable

Porridgealert · 17/09/2021 18:54

I speak to and love all my family including in-laws. I never realised that I should be calling them narcissistic twats and cunts and going no contact.

Aww, no, no, no. I realise that this is a lighthearted thread but don't do that, pleeeease. Spiders are the good guys. They keep your house free of destructive insects and disease spreading flies. Big love to spiders.
Autumngoldleaf · 17/09/2021 18:59
  1. shoes on. I've only met one real life person who treats their flooring better than guests, from small houses to grand ones it's shoes on. People I know wipe their feet!
  2. talking to myself dc when out and about. One has had a speech delay and processing issues so I have to really imprint stuff on her brain and repeat and ask her to repeat. I didn't realise somewhere some absolute nasty low life's would be interpreting this as performance parenting.. And sneering.
  3. washing bedding one every two weeks.
mumwon · 17/09/2021 19:01

hating wind chimes & being appalled at the thought of anyone doing work for you (aka kitchen fitters of men servicing boilers et al ) should want to use the loo & tan - shock! Horror! do a pooh - eve if they flush it

TinyTroubleMaker · 17/09/2021 19:02

The number of people who seem to spend half their day curtain twitching in case someone parks in the wrong place outside their house for 5 minutes.

Ziegfeld · 17/09/2021 19:04

@NCBlossom

Step mums are universally hated on mumsnet as I found out when I became one… Shock

No idea why loo brushes are hated. You do have to scrub sometimes, what do people do?!

All children seem to have amazingly healthy food on here, and all eat up that broccoli. Where do these children come from that all happily eat broccoli?

This is going to be outing, but mine eats up all that broccoli, not just his but mine too unless I fight him off. I put it down to feeding him mashed veg when he was extremely young, not baby rice, and THAT was because I was influenced by an extremist MN type website in the US.
