Things you thought were normal/harmless until joining mumsnet

(Lighthearted )
lots of things that I thought were quite normal /fine/harmless before I joined MM seem to be quite abhorrent to a large percentage of posters. I often find myself wondering about whether my perceived normal is actually the minority. Some examples

Home made food or cakes - I bloody love home made cakes and think they are always nicer than shop bought - my first thoughts when offered one is usually yum, a cake! I've never given a moments thought to whether the person owns cats or dogs or has a hygeine certificate.

Ensuite bathrooms - I've got an ensuite bathroom. It's used for any instance where you may need a toilet. Apparently this is very very wrong.

Eating carbs

Bayliss and Harding toiletries - I would not be offended by this as a gift unless it was from my husband

(I'm with you on Thorntons though - they are nasty)

Answering the door to someone - if I see ex criminals selling stuff door to door, I dont answer, otherwise I dont have a problem with answering the door, and i get on with all of my neighbours.

Speaking to and socialising with work colleagues - i speak to, socialise (outside of work) and am friends with most of my work colleagues. I'd count many of them as friends. We buy each other birthday cards and presents and sometimes bring in cakes. (See point 1)

What are the things you've been educated on since joining MN?

Crumbs where do I start?

I have a hot tub, inflatable one too!
Do my dds laundry, one is 23 and the other 15. It's not hard labour for me.
Dd age 23 moved back home with her ds age 6. She works full time so I do things for her that makes life easier for her. Because I love her not because I'm her slave and she's ungrateful.
I LOVE looking after my family, SAHM have worked before but ill health put paid to that.
DH works really hard for us but will still pitch in with housework and cooking but it's no expected of him at all.
I love my inlaws.
I have a loo brush.
We only have one bathroom!
My dogs and cats are allowed on the furniture.
I eat biscuits at 3am when I cant sleep 🤣

TarpaulinEyes · 17/09/2021 13:29

3am biscuits are the best. My cats start demanding breakfast from 3 onwards. I often cave in and feed them taking the opportunity to make myself a mug of tea to take back to bed with a few biscuits.

WingingItSince1973 · 17/09/2021 13:29

Ooo sorry one more..

Buying my dh side of the family presents and not leaving it upto my dh to do it. I love buying presents and am much better at it than dh. Though he's better a wrapping them 🤣 To me my dh side of family are also my family and I absolutely adore my nieces and nephews and am very close to my sis in laws. But hey ho I'm strange x

@TarpaulinEyes I didn't sleep well last night. Ended up in kitchen early hours sharing ham and cheese with 4 cats and 2 dogs 🤣 Was tempted to take some cheese upto our pet rats but didn't want to wake up dd as they in her room and she would then probably get up and make cup tea 🤣 I do love a midnight feast.

Same here. Eating and drinking in bed feels decadent.

That the way my STBXH was treating me wasn’t right - his gaslighting, silent treatments and the way he is to our son

Pet bowels in the dishwasher

Just its bowels? What do you do with the rest of the pet? Shock

Pliudev · 17/09/2021 17:38

I have realised that, as a MIL, I am an evil witch and mustn't under any circumstances give presents to DGC. Nor must I visit, call or invite DCs and their families on holiday.
I realise that I ruined my 3 DSs by putting Penguins in their lunchboxes.
And I have realised, as if I didn't know already, how poor I am.
Oh and I also live in a god forsaken hellhole where it rains all the time and children have nothing to do. Cornwall.

ILoveShula · 17/09/2021 17:38

Leave your pet's bowels where they are. The pet can empty it's own bowels

Antsinyourpanta · 17/09/2021 17:40

I was on one thread and some posters were appalled at pet bowls going in the dishwasher and others were equally disgusted at them being washed in the sink. I've not yet found an alternative that is acceptable....the bath...?

Never get dressed up for a night or a special occasion.

Never give your child the name you like, give them a name you don't like and then turn it into nickname you like

Topseyt · 17/09/2021 17:47

I have always put the dog food bowls in the dishwasher.

I have not one toilet brush, but two!! Imagine that.

I leave washing out until I can be arsed to get it in.

I used to let my children eat chocolate and crisps when they were young. I even put some in their school packed lunches. They seem to have survived. Somehow.

I hope you don't disembowel your pet!

I expect you mean bowls.

Susysue10 · 17/09/2021 17:49

@PermanentTemporary

Even as a comically typical Mumsnetter I have lots of unacceptable stuff going on. The worst probably my attitude to dogs and animals generally- I think 'kill shelters' are sensible and also most animal charities are hugely overloaded with money.
Omg... what an abhorrent thing to say and think. You obviously hate animals which I and many others cannot understand. In fact I would go as far to say that I don't trust anyone who has thoughts like you. Disgusting
speakout · 17/09/2021 17:49

Haven't read the whole thread- but conservatories.
Apparently dreadful things.

I love mine, use it all year round, a great space.

bonfireheart · 17/09/2021 17:53

What is a "kill shelter"?

DonaPatrizia · 17/09/2021 17:53

We don’t have a poo knife and I’d never heard of one, or even imagined the need for one, until I came on MN.

bonfireheart · 17/09/2021 17:54

Poo knife?! Thay can't be real!

vdbfamily · 17/09/2021 17:59

Changing my sheets every week or two. Towels if they start to smell musty. Dog sometimes lick's the plates in the dishwasher. I call on people uninvited and welcome unexpected guests. I am surprised my children have not been removed from me based on the neglect MN would accuse me of. My first child came straight home from hospital into her own room. ( cot by door, door open and my door open about 3 foot away) She may have been in a Moses basket for a couple of weeks actually, can't remember.
I don't speak to DH during day on phone unless an emergency. He shoots and cons and had always seen the children as an equal responsibility. He has never sworn at me. We share all our money.
MN is a complete revelation to me every day. I am totally addicted.

Kids camping in the garden. They’ll definitely get murdered

justlliloleme · 17/09/2021 18:00

Having artificial grass & a low maintenance garden. I much prefer it to the over grown unloved garden we had before, but it's an mumsnet no no!

I find some people on here quite precious about the most trivial things.

Some of the threads are lighthearted & funny so I keep coming back.

Sofiegiraffe · 17/09/2021 18:02

Baby showers
Using Facebook as it was intended for sharing your life with friends online

AwkwardAnnie · 17/09/2021 18:08

Allowing children to draw on pavements in chalk. Apparently this is graffiti and they should be locked up. (Even though I live near Manchester and it's unlikely to last more than a day before being washed away by the persistent rain!)
