Why do girls wear pinfores and not school skirts ?

I have a DS at school and a preschooler DD, but I don't get why the girls at infant school wear pinnys and not school skirts ? Do skirts just not work on infant age girls ? I mean a skirt can be worn all year with tight or socks around so surely this is cheaper? I don't see many girls in trousers either, which seems crazy in the snow and ice last year they are all wearing tights.

I mean I think personally the school uniform shouldn't be different for girls and boys, but anyway I don't want to make this protest via my DD 🤨

My DD has all three, pinafore, skirts and trousers. She just prefers a pinafore. Plus I agree with PP about it keeping white polos stain free. She does have a slim waist as well so I think she finds them more comfortable.

Abraxan · 09/09/2021 11:40

Re trousers - lots don't like trousers esp if wet or snowy. The wetness from the ground gets in the bottom of the trousers meaning wet ankles, which can then seep upwards. In that sense, a pinafore or skirt with fitted tights or leggings is preferable.

stoopidqu · 09/09/2021 11:44

If girls wear trousers it would mean like boys they need a summer alternative. My DS has never worried about having his Polo
T-shirt tucked in 😂 I do find it crazy that girls have a light summer dress option and boys don't.

It's been boiling the last few days here 27-29 degrees and seeing the girls in pinafores they look boiling with the double layer. Of course they can wear summer dresses instead up to half term, but most parents wouldn't of bought these for just a few weeks of
September. Was just musing on whether a skirt would work
Summer and winter, but I've not put DD in skirts really as dresses are or playsuits are compete outfits.

I prefer pinafore. Less risk of getting pesky stains on white tops too.

That's fine but why does the default have to be trousers?

Why can't any child be allowed to select from any of the following: skirt, trousers, shorts, pinafore, dress, culottes Regardless if whether they are a boy or a girl?

As an adult I hate wearing trousers. They are a pain to get the right fit, especially as I'm short. Was the same growing up - getting the right fit for both waist and leg length at the same time can be really difficult.

Peanutsandchilli · 09/09/2021 11:46

My 4 year old has gone in a skirt (at her request) this morning. She also wore trousers a lot at school nursery, although only the jersey ones as they just pull up and down. They can be a pain if you've got a skinny child though. Pinafores are just easier tbh. They also protect the (daft) white polo shirts from beans at lunchtime.

PileOfBooks · 09/09/2021 11:46

Boys do have a lighter option - shorts!

Most girls wear the summer dress here but a significant number wear pinafores or skirts on summer too.

Nanananani · 09/09/2021 11:46

They fit better
They can also be worn with tights or socks
They are easier to get marks off/hide stains better than the front of a white top

2andahalfpints · 09/09/2021 11:47

My dd won't wear trousers, always wears a skirt - it's entirely her choice and we've had so many pairs of unworn trousers I've given up buying them.

Pinafores are easier as pp mentioned for fitting etc and can be worn all year round with tights etc

Abraxan · 09/09/2021 11:47

Boys are my school can choose to wear shorts.
So can the girls.
Infact, our uniform isn't divided into boys and girls, just a list of acceptable clothing items and recommended colours.

LittleDoritt · 09/09/2021 11:49

Mine have a mixture of pinafores and skirts, but pinafores generally look neater (shirt untucked etc.) and are warmer so are favoured. Trousers are a nightmare. I have one skinny waisted one so if her waist fits her ankles are swinging, and one "sturdy" Wink one, so if her waist fits there is an extra metre of fabric in the legs.

PumpkinKlNG · 09/09/2021 11:50

They do have an option for boys, it’s called shorts

suredsun · 09/09/2021 11:50

Pinafores are much comfier if you don't like tight elastic around your waist.

NerrSnerr · 09/09/2021 11:52

My daughter is another one who is slim so a dress doesn't fall down like skirts do.

polyester- viscose shorts aren't that nice in summer compared to a cotton or at worst cotton blend school dress.

My DD is chunky, so maybe a skirt will work, I think I'll try get some second hand uniform for next year and try it out.

As long as children are wearing the correct school colours then it shouldn't matter.
All pupils should be able to wear shorts, skirts, dresses, pinafores or trousers as they wish.

stoopidqu · 09/09/2021 11:55

I've never seen any girls wearing shorts, maybe 3 across the whole infant school in trousers in winter. Could be more but just generally. There is one girl in DS' class who worn a school jumper and trousers rather than a pinny and cardigan.

In our school it's all optional.
Summer dresses,skirt,pinafores,trousers,shorts for girls.
Boys wear trousers, tracksuit bottoms and shorts.
I prefer pinafores as they are more practical and look more elegant than skirts.

vinoandbrie · 09/09/2021 11:59

At our school it’s pinnies for infants and skirts for juniors. Strict uniform code.

3JsMa · 09/09/2021 12:00

School shorts are made of cotton so are school summer dressesHmm

stoopidqu · 09/09/2021 12:03

@3JsMa where are school shorts cotton ? Even if buy from John Lewis they are polyester. M&S the same.

School shorts are most definitely not cotton.

randomsabreuse · 09/09/2021 12:10

Narrow waists, no hips makes skirts and trousers a nightmare. Even the adjustable ones aren't very comfortable if they're all the way in! Pinafores and summer dresses are so much easier for different sizes!

Most of the girls at the upper end of DSs first school (yrs 3&4) wear shorts throughout the warmer months. It's 'cool' (in both senses of the word)
overworkedrobot · 09/09/2021 12:12

You can get cotton school shorts.

First two google links.
