Why do girls wear pinfores and not school skirts ?

I have a DS at school and a preschooler DD, but I don't get why the girls at infant school wear pinnys and not school skirts ? Do skirts just not work on infant age girls ? I mean a skirt can be worn all year with tight or socks around so surely this is cheaper? I don't see many girls in trousers either, which seems crazy in the snow and ice last year they are all wearing tights.

I mean I think personally the school uniform shouldn't be different for girls and boys, but anyway I don't want to make this protest via my DD 🤨

Well in our primary school their T-shirt MUST have the school badge on and they're much more expensive for one than for a pack of 3 from the supermarket so a lot of parents choose pinafores as you can't see the badge and it saves a small fortune over the years also T-shirt's are much less likely to come home with lunch and paint stains all over them with the pinafore on (light coloured T-shirt's at our school) but actually I chose pinafores because I just think they look nice.

Rainallnight · 09/09/2021 15:08

DD wears black (uniform colour) leggings under hers when it’s cold, she doesn’t like tights

Bunnycat101 · 09/09/2021 15:14

My child looks like a scruff-bag in her skirt with her polo top flopping about. She looks a bit tidier in her dresses tbh. I like the gingham dresses best though. Grey dresses are really drab. She outgrows trousers much quicker than dresses.

I always had the choice when I was little, and I chose pinafores for Autumn every time! I loved wearing them it made me feel fancy 😂

But looking at it from a mum point of view, I was also a very skinny child and it would have been so much easier to fit me into a pinafore than a skirt, and they last longer too!

InnPain · 09/09/2021 15:49

Pinafores are better than skirts as skirts are hard to fit around the waist for some girls, pinafores are like an all in one so easier in my opinion. My DD wears trousers/black joggers/black leggings.

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 09/09/2021 15:51

I have a DD who is almost 8. She's in 5-6 year clothing for length but 3-4 waist. Skirts and trousers all have to be altered. A pinafore doesn't as it doesnt have to fir her waist.

FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping · 09/09/2021 16:21

My 5 year old DD hates trousers and prefers dresses and skirts. Pinafores are more practical for all the reasons already suggested. She wears dresses and tights all year round, in Scotland, and never seems to suffer from the cold. I also wear dresses and tights all year round (or no tights in hot weather!).

Wearing a dress has never stopped her from climbing trees or being active either.

MerlinsSaggyLeftTit · 09/09/2021 16:23

DD1 wears pinafores after trial and error in Reception where we discovered she hated trousers and skirts, because they were all too big around the waist. Even the adjustable one were never comfortable. Pinafores are just easier and I do like that they keep her top clean(er).

DD2 wears pinafores because second child syndrome

curiouscatgotkilled · 09/09/2021 16:25

We do a mix, my 5 year old refuses trousers. I think Pinafores are comfy, especially the nice soft jersey ones you get now. They keep the stupid white T-shirt's clean. Easier to fit.
My DD just seems to prefer them.
My 10 year old only wears trousers and 13 year old is in a tube skirt.

Blendabrethin · 09/09/2021 16:26

Perhaps because little girls don't have the necessary hips to hold up a skirt yet, or because a pinnafore hides a stained and crumpled school shirt better (no ironing, whooo!) or because they keep their chests warmer in cold weather (good if your kid has asthma). Also, they are adorable.

PivotPivotPivottt · 09/09/2021 16:29

I prefer pinafores I think they are nicer and they don't fall down round the waist. Plus sometimes can skip ironing shirt/polo.

PileOfBooks · 09/09/2021 16:35

I haven't ironed a polo shirt in 7 years...

DinosApple · 09/09/2021 16:51

Pinafores are a godsend for parents with skinny children. They also allow freedom of movement.

Be glad there's such a variety that children and parents have a choice!

BigPyjamas · 09/09/2021 16:56

Pinafores are easier to fit, and no annoying waist band. My eldest is skinny and my youngest a bit chubby and I've handed down the same pinafores/dresses between them without issue.

My youngest DD won't wear trousers. Absolutely won't. No idea why, I wear them often so it's not a conditioning thing.

LER83 · 09/09/2021 17:02

Surely most kids ask to wear what they feel most comfortable in? Our school doesn't have a boys and girls uniform, its just a list of approved items; skirts, shorts, trousers, pinafore and gingham dress.Dd is 9 & in year 5, she wears either a skirt or shorts, with tights and boots in the winter, she doesn't like trousers. I would say about 80% of the girls wear trousers in winter. I always worried she would be cold, but she said that the classrooms get quite hot, even in winter and she overheats easily. When she was younger her choice was a pinafore. In contrast, my ds never wore shorts, always trousers no matter what the temperature!

BashfulClam · 09/09/2021 17:08

Skirts can be hard to get a good fit. Many young kids can be super skinny and tall so a dress/pinafore is easier to wear and fits well for longer.

Your daughter is preschool age OP. Lots of parents of girls that are actually at school are telling you lots of good reasons why pinafores suit many girls. I don’t understand why you’re so dismissive of those of us with actual lived experience. I also don’t understand what your actual complaint is - you want your son to wear cotton gingham shorts (they do exist in several major supermarkets)? Your daughter to wear trousers or a skirt but they aren’t allowed (that’s unusual for a state primary)? You just don’t approve of uniform?

I don’t want my child of either sex wearing jogging bottoms as school uniform (they aren’t all that warm either actually on a windy playground) and while I agree about Mary Jane shoes in bad weather, my daughter has ankle boots in winter or black trainers. Also wellingtons kept at school for muddy play. She has never complained of being cold at school - plenty of posh boys prep schools have boys in shorts and knee socks year round!

TheyreTheSamePicture · 09/09/2021 20:42

I totally agree with you how some people dress their girls in winter. It’s a real pet hate of mine. Right now my DD wears a skirt or pinafore, ankle socks, and T-bar shoes. When it’s chilly the tights will go on (we’ve suggested trousers but she loves her skirts and dresses) and when it’s very wet she’ll be in a little pair of black patent boots - it’s hard to find nice covered shoes that aren’t clumpy ‘boy’ ones.

But some people continue to send girls to school in ankle socks and open shoes well into the winter months - I see so many girls with bare legs on chilly days, while their brothers are in school trousers and warm shoes.

PaperMonster · 09/09/2021 20:46

My daughter’s ten and prefers a pinafore. She doesn’t like anything too tight round her waist. Skirts that fit her around the waist are usually too short. Pinafores get round that issue.

CassandraTrotter · 09/09/2021 20:55

What you’re asking for is girls to be in boys uniform, no matter what spin you put on that. When people say unisex they always mean male. It is tedious.

My ds never wears trousers. He always wears shorts. In winter, i try to get him to wear knee length socks but he insists that makes him too hot. Shorts and ankle socks all year.

Comefromaway · 09/09/2021 21:06

When Ds was little we went to an outdoor event. it was bitter cold I put a pair of his sisters tights on underneath his trousers. Kept him far warmer than just trousers and socks. I actually think in many ways girls uniforms are far more practical than boys.

ILoveANameChange · 09/09/2021 21:37

My DD has a tiny waist. The skirts would fall down. A pinafore doesn't. She isn't a tom boy and loves her dresses, so why would I put trousers on her

BogRollBOGOF · 09/09/2021 23:02

DS never looks neat. His trousers are either too short in the leg so they fit his waist, or long enough and falling off.
T-shirts also end up with a length: waist battle. In the younger years his trousers and polo shirt would get covered in food and board pens.

I'd love it if pinafores were acceptable for boys to wear, much more practical and tidy!

Like DS, I was built like a stick and wore pinafores all through primary because I couldn't keep skirts or trousers up until then.

overworkedrobot · 10/09/2021 09:13

BogrollBOGOF you need M&S extra long trousers, then you can size down at the waist.

PumpkinKlNG · 10/09/2021 11:31

Kids are not allowed to wear boots at my children’s school. They can wear them to walk to school in but have to change them when they get in
