Why do girls wear pinfores and not school skirts ?

I have a DS at school and a preschooler DD, but I don't get why the girls at infant school wear pinnys and not school skirts ? Do skirts just not work on infant age girls ? I mean a skirt can be worn all year with tight or socks around so surely this is cheaper? I don't see many girls in trousers either, which seems crazy in the snow and ice last year they are all wearing tights.

I mean I think personally the school uniform shouldn't be different for girls and boys, but anyway I don't want to make this protest via my DD 🤨

Pinafore dresses are just a modern version of a school tunic.

Normandy144 · 09/09/2021 11:10

Pinafores are better at keeping white polo shirts clean from paint/white board marker/tomato based sauces at lunchtime. Skirts = messy tops!

Herja · 09/09/2021 11:10

I can buy them with growing room, but they stay in place; DD manks her white shirts - a pinafore takes the stauns better; DD objects to waistbands that move and I don't like the jersy elasticated skirts; the school is bloody cold in winter and it's an easy extra layer.

No trousers as she will only wear leggings and objects greatly to formal school trousers.

Dd (8) has both this year but previous years she only had pinafores.

This is because we couldn’t get one to fit her waist without it being a mini skirt.

LouNatics · 09/09/2021 11:11

My DD can’t get skirts to stay up. No hips to hold them on. To stay up round the waist she needs to wear skirts five year sizes smaller than her actual age, but then they are ridiculously short. The same problem with trousers. Leggings are even worse as you can’t add a belt. To be long enough, they will literally fall down as she runs.

You can wear pinafores all year round, why wouldn’t you.

I much, much prefer to wear tights and boots in the winter and so does one of my DC. The other prefers trousers all year round but often comes home with mucky/wet hems flapping round the ankles on wet days.

Angel2702 · 09/09/2021 11:12

Always a mix at our school. Pinafores are usually cheaper to replace and for us it protected the expensive logo tops. It also avoided trying to get skirt to fit well in the waist.

PileOfBooks · 09/09/2021 11:13

Love pinafores! So much easier. Look cute. My other dd wore trousers and far harder to fit to waist/hips especially as they got bigger. And then grew out of so fast. A pinafore lasts ages as just rises up a bit!

idontlikealdi · 09/09/2021 11:14

Covers up more of the shirt so you could potentially get more than a day out of the shirt.

Mine were too skinny for skirts in yr, they just fell down.

Biancadelrioisback · 09/09/2021 11:16

Why do you think you can't wear pinafores all year round?

DevilFinger · 09/09/2021 11:16

Mine has sensory issues and won't tolerate anything around her waist, pinafores are perfect

MichelleScarn · 09/09/2021 11:16

I think dresses are easier than skirts personally, and not another thread about girls wearing trousers to school 💤💤💤 my girls don’t want to wear trousers! Are you the op who posted about wanting all schools to change to only allow trousers as that’s what your daughter wanted to wear but didn’t want to be the odd one out?
Absolutely!!!
mummyh2016 · 09/09/2021 11:17

My 4 year old finds it more difficult to go to the toilet with a skirt on than a pinafore. When she was in school nursery last year whenever she had a toilet accident it used to coincide with the days I had sent her in a skirt.

ineedaholidayandwine · 09/09/2021 11:18

My 5yr old hates trousers so i'm not wasting money on them, though the school does allow them.
Pinafores fit better, she's too skinny for skirts, buying her age would be fine length but would be too big on the waist, buying younger would mean the skirt is shorter. Pinafore's also look smart as no tops coming untucked and keeps the tops cleaner
She can also wear it all year round, short sleeved top underneath in summer, long sleeve with tights in winter, though she prefers her gingham dresses more in summer

Marmite27 · 09/09/2021 11:20

Mine wear pinafores in preference to skirts as they don’t have to worry about their shirt being tucked in and as they’re tall we have to buy the next size up, even with adjustable waists there’s still a risk of them falling down!

eurochick · 09/09/2021 11:21

Mine is a string bean with no waist or bum to keep a skirt up. She's just moved to Y3 and the uniform has changed to skirts. I've had to get them quite tight to get them to stay up so they won't last long or be very comfortable. Pinafores are a better option.

Cattitudes · 09/09/2021 11:22

Agree pinafore dresses cover the polo shirt so it doesn't get covered with paint and you can't see the school logo so can wear non logo top but skirt was easier on PE day so we mixed and matched.

See what your dd wants to do. Trousers, skirt, pinafore, shorts, up to her. The only difference from the sound of it is that boys only have the choice of trousers/shorts whereas girls have loads of choice. Maybe you should encourage the school to open up all the choices to boys too then the uniform will be the same.

Lindy2 · 09/09/2021 11:24

My youngest DD prefers pinafores as she finds them more comfortable.

My eldest DD prefers trousers.

They just wear what they feel is best for them.

tywysoges · 09/09/2021 11:27

As other said, mine used pinafores because skirts didn’t fit well enough. She in secondary now and wears trousers.

reluctantbrit · 09/09/2021 11:28

For us it was for two reasons, too small waist so most times the skirts would just fall down. Second, she had bowl issues and most trousers or skirts hurt when she had trouble so she was wearing dresses 7 days a week.

I think the majority of girls in her Infant school wore pianoforte, by the tome they moved to Junior they were all in skirts.

DappledThings · 09/09/2021 11:33

DD is a year off starting school but I'd imagine she'll be in pinafores. She's 4 in December and the age 2-3 summer skirt I bought the her this year is still falling straight down off her. I expect finding a school skirt small enough will be difficult.

MrsMiddleMother · 09/09/2021 11:33

Pinafores are so much easier for little girls, doesn't have to fit at the waist and be the right length. My daughter hated school trousers and I was grateful because again the fit is difficult. Has to fit the hips and length, taking up etc just hassle easy to avoid.

CoffeeWithCheese · 09/09/2021 11:36

With my two - the pinafores had pockets to collect millions of random stones off the playground at lunchtime.

621CustardCream438 · 09/09/2021 11:37

My daughter started school with all three options. Doesn’t like the trousers and never wore them - she’ll wear leggings but not school type trousers. Skirts kept twisting round at the waist or riding up and the shirt came untucked. Pinafore was easy to put on (zip front), stayed in place, didn’t have to fit terribly precisely, shirt didn’t need fussing with and with a pair of woolly tights and a thick cardigan was perfectly warm. In summer she wanted a gingham dress anyway.

I’m not expecting she’ll still want a pinafore at 10, but for now at infant school that’s what she prefers so that’s what she has. I agree all children of whatever sex should be allowed trousers, shorts, skirt or dress - but I’d be really cross if only trousers were allowed.

Children in my school usually choose a school dress or pinafore.

Both can also be worn with tights or socks, same as a skirt.

Many don't have a skirt as they don't have the waist band issue - some of ours are very tiny and the skirts can slip down as the waist bands don't always fit well, which they don't like. Some don't like the feel of the waist band round their middle.
