Are you stockpiling?

Are you stockpiling food, clothes, toys, medicines? I’ve gotten a bit worried lately with the news of price increases and limited supplies. Shelves seem fairly full where I am (London) but perhaps that’s not going to last? Can’t help but notice much of my food comes from abroad, not to mention medicines, DC clothes and toys, etc.

I’m a bit skint already but if prices will rise and I can do a bit of Christmas shopping for DC now I reckon I’d rather have it sorted.

Really, it ain't rocket science.

@MrsLargeEmbodied

buying extra when on offer smacks of selfishness what about other people who want the offer
It’s on the offer so I will take advantage of that and buy extra pack or 2. “What about the other people” I’m not clearing the shelf so there’s plenty left for the other people.

So many times I came across empty shelf of something on the offer. Am I supposed to throw a tantrum because “those selfish, horrible people prevented me from buying item I usually buy a bit cheaper”?

Get over yourself

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/09/2021 10:18

i take it you wont be persuaded @FrenchBoule

YetAnotherSpartacus · 05/09/2021 10:19

I don't think you've won anyone over, frankly!

Coogee · 05/09/2021 10:24

Overbuying is ridiculous and no wonder so many people are overweight.
You don't have to eat it all in one go 😂

Ha ha!

It’s a twenty mile round trip to my nearest supermarket and I try and do it as little as possible. Inevitably, when I do go, I buy a lot of stuff. Even more if I spot an any offers offers I like. My cellar resembles an urban corner shop/off licence.

shouldbeworkingmore · 05/09/2021 10:37

After a year you'll have 52 extra tins which should keep you going incase of emergency.

I think this is where I struggle as I'm not sure what kind of emergency would prompt to exist off those 52 tins for more than a day. I'd rather just get a McDonalds 🤷🏻‍♀️

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/09/2021 10:40

you obviously meet your match if the special offer shelves are empty @FrenchBoule
on occasions the supermarkets need to stop people buying extra as a cure for the selfishness of some looters

FfrothiCoffi · 05/09/2021 10:40

I think if there was ever a situation where we needed 52 of anything before being able to get to a shop, society will have broken down to such an extent that stockpiling won’t help anyone. People would be looting and breaking into neighbours houses in desperation.

But there’s no Mac Donald’s anywhere near me. There’s nothing if much near me and when the pandemic was in full Swing back in lockdown 1 the local shop was half empty of everything)

(I don’t have 52 tins I have about 25 of various sorts - tomatoes, beans, kidney beans and pears and peaches mostly)

shouldbeworkingmore · 05/09/2021 10:42

If I go out and buy a couple of extra tins of soup every time I do my weekly shop that is stock-piling. There is plenty left for everyone else and the shop can order more in.

If I go out and buy the entire stock on the shelf, that is panic buying,

Can we really not see the difference?

But surely the reality is like the OP people read about shortages & everyone buys a little bit extra at the same time.

I don't believe the vast majority of people just go to one shelf & only buy everything on that shelf (unless it's toilet paper).

And in the case of upcoming Christmas shortages the shops can't buy more as they will have ordered their turkeys, pigs in blankets, lego, celebrations etc already.

Exactly!

Are we really going to look out of windows see soldiers/zombies/aliens/tsunamis etc & think "thank god I stocked up, I'll sneak down to the bunker & enjoy my tinned peaches".

I can shoot guns & arrows & DH is excellent at hand to hand combat so we will be coming for your stores! 😆

But that's you. My point was I have hundreds of options near me & the only thing out of stock during covid was yeast but as I don't bake I couldn't care less.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 05/09/2021 10:57

Miniroofbox - no need to justify yourself :) You are perfectly justified to do what you do.

As for me, I haven't eaten in McDonald's for over twenty years and I don't intend to start now!

FrenchBoule · 05/09/2021 11:00

@MrsLargeEmbodied offer is for everybody.

Going by your logic nobody should ever buy anything that is on the offer in case somebody else wants it. Which of course they shouldn’t buy it because it’s on the offer and it would be unfair on everybody else if they bought it.

Bonkers idea 🙄

Ooh had a big tasty from there yesterday 😋

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/09/2021 11:05

erm no @FrenchBoule
it is those buying three of an offer, obviously

mum2jakie · 05/09/2021 11:35

Lol. Offers are designed to encourage people to buy multiples. Remember when people were genuinely stockpiling early in 2020 and stocks were really low, all the offers were stopped pretty much straightaway! I'm not going to be a martyr and not stock up on products I enjoy at a decent price so I can more in a few weeks time!
mum2jakie · 05/09/2021 11:35

*pay more in a few weeks time

YetAnotherSpartacus · 05/09/2021 11:47

Each to their own. Personally, I'll always try and make sure that I never have to resort to what would be for me a near last resort.

shouldbeworkingmore · 05/09/2021 11:51

@YetAnotherSpartacus there's a whole world of restaurants & fast food places out there but if you like your tins, crack on!

NotMyCat · 05/09/2021 11:54

@MrsLargeEmbodied

I don't buy extra! I buy 1 or 2, I'm not emptying the shelves The way I shop is I have a list, I buy the list and then I check the offers or I check last weeks shop, anything on offer I add to basket
YetAnotherSpartacus · 05/09/2021 12:09

Gee thanks :). I personally don't count McDonald's as 'food' and nor would I risk a blizzard, pandemic, or flood for a fatty, salty 'burger' (and anyway, I'm vegetarian). Maybe for real food, but McDonald's, nah.

Why would you have to risk anything for a McDonalds?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 05/09/2021 12:19

Some reasons for stockpiling of course - it helps if you keep up with the thread :)

shouldbeworkingmore · 05/09/2021 12:29

But my post said if I was ever in a situation where I had to survive on 52 tins I would get a McDonalds as my one delivers. In my opinion that's just the easiest option, I'm not sure why you have such an issue with that. I'm not saying you should do it, as I said enjoy your tins!
