Looking at moving there (currently north Leeds).
I know parts of it but not much.
Can anyone tell me which are the nicer areas?
We have seen a house in Thornes so if you know this area in particular that would be great!
And also opinions on the schools please, primary and secondary.

@Brendabigbaps oh thank you, that’s reassuring! We aren’t too fussed about nightlife as we are homebodies.
Could I ask whereabouts you are? Don’t suppose you know what ST Austin’s school is like?

If you want an RC school I wouldn't choose St Austins. St Ignatius in Ossett is better. Non-catholic Dimple Wells is also very good.

That is close to the schools mentioned.

My child doesn't go to st Austin's but I know people who do. Only heard good things about it there from them

@Raera why do you say not to choose it?

Extraslice · 22/08/2021 12:40

Interested to know this too!

I live in a village WF4.
I dont bother going to Wakefield for anything. Its shite
I go to Huddersfield or Leeds for shopping. I love my village though. Its rural and has a good community

Disneycharacter · 22/08/2021 16:23

Travelling into Leeds via the M62 is evil in the morning and evenings coming back. There is a huge (really huge) housing development called City Fields so houses are plentiful, but I can see road links plummeting because of the volumes being built.

Disneycharacter · 22/08/2021 16:28

Walton and croften are quite nice

Stripyhoglets · 22/08/2021 17:00

Walton, Crofton, Sandal, Crigglestone all nice. Mostly good primary schools in the area. Kettlethorpe high school is a good school for all kids and/or those needing additional support.

I'm bored living here now as I have been here over 20 years and I have itchy feet to move on - but Wakefield is a better place with much more for young families, like the art gallery and family activities there, than when my kids were small.
I probably wouldn't move here from Chapel Allerton in Leeds though!

My parents are in a small WF4 village - I was there an hour ago 😀

Does yours begin with an N by any chance...?

Really?

Nope, maybe not. Still WF4, just a different village!
CupcakeBabaPoooo · 22/08/2021 17:47

I was born and bred in Wakefield. Sandal in particular. It isn't perfect but it's come on leaps and bounds over the past decade. It might be a bit behind Leeds in terms of the city centre but it's not as bad as some people have made out. Sandal Castle and Pugneys are nice to walk around, there's longer walks up to Waterton/Walton.

I went to Kettlethorpe High School and did alright. Went to Sandal Endowed before that - it still has a swimming pool.

I have never seen or been a victim of crime in Wakey and it's an easy commute to Leeds. My dad did it for as long as I can remember.

I love the place and remember it fondly, as I sadly no longer live up north.

Extraslice · 22/08/2021 18:22

That’s lovely @CupcakeBabaPoooo thank you.
Do you know Thornes at all?

Extraslice · 22/08/2021 18:22

I really want to love the area as love the house!
Is there things to do with babies like groups etc?

SIHastingsLiketheBattle · 22/08/2021 18:38

Look at villages like Church Fenton, Ulleskelf, around Tadcaster. We moved here from North Leeds and access to the motorway is great, only takes 20-25 mins to get into Leeds and the trains at church Fenton are useful too! Or maybe over East Leeds way - Garforth?

Extraslice · 22/08/2021 18:46

@SIHastingsLiketheBattle weirdly I hadn’t heard of church Fenton until the other day. It looks lovely. Do you know much about the schools there?

OP posts:
Extraslice · 22/08/2021 18:47

Looking at Garforth also!

Born and bred in Wakefield, v close to St Austins which was always a good school. My brother and family (2 girls) live in Horbury and really like it, both kids at Horbury school and have had no problems.

HurryUpAndStandThere · 22/08/2021 18:52

@Extraslice There are a few baby groups in the area. There was a large soft play area in the park arena, I don't know if it's still operating or not nowadays.
