Looking at moving there (currently north Leeds).
I know parts of it but not much.
Can anyone tell me which are the nicer areas?
We have seen a house in Thornes so if you know this area in particular that would be great!
And also opinions on the schools please, primary and secondary.

Meanwood and seen a house in Thornes
We have missed out on a few houses in this area - there is so much competition. Hence we have widened our search! It is a scary prospect going to somewhere completely new.

There's Outwood Grange (catchment is brandy Carr, wrenthorpe, outdoor, Stanleybut is very over subscribed), which is a decent school. Extremely strict and would not recommend for children with any extra needs

I have nephews at Outwood Grange and they don’t find it strict. It has that reputation, but mostly from people who haven’t sent their kids there Hmm. Nephews said most kids find it fine, they’re usually politely asked- the one’s that end up in detention etc are the repeat rule breakers.

Can’t comment in depth about SEN but one of my nephews had some extra needs and they couldn’t have done more.

Both kids have done extremely well academically, the youngest has been supported in an extra curricular activity they do to a high level as well.

You also have Rodillian which is highly rated.

My sister is in Stanley, finds it well placed for the commute into Leeds, and also on the main plymouth-london-aberdeen train line. Most places are easy to get to by road as you have the A1/m1/m62 accessible.

Most of the primaries around outwood/stanley/newton hill/wrenthorpe are very good and over subscribed.

RampantIvy · 21/08/2021 23:32

Why Wakefield? Why not Pudsey, Rodley or Farsley?

EverythingsComingUpRoses · 21/08/2021 23:33

There's no way I'd be moving from Meanwood to Wakefield

Do the local estate agents know what your position is as buyers (assuming you are in a good position?)

You really need to get them on side to get in to see properties so you are in with a chance

As I said it’s limd going back in time someone mentioned sandal-I have seen drug taking and prostitution there during the day z-never seen that in meanwood
MauveMagnolia · 22/08/2021 00:12

Boston spa, wetherby or even boroughbridge?

Thesearmsofmine · 22/08/2021 00:24

My parents live in Thornes(have been there about 20 years) and have never had any issues. It’s a nice enough area and we go to the park regularly, my kids love the skate park, the play area is a bit dated but they are hoping to update it in the spring.
Horbury is lovely, I also have family there. It has a proper high street and village type feel.

HurryUpAndStandThere · 22/08/2021 00:25

I live in Woolley village in South Wakefield, It's a five minute drive to the M1.
Sandal is ok, depending on which part of it that you live in. Woolgreaves sandal is fine as is the Sandal Castle area, Manygates, which likes to class itself as Sandal, not so much.
Thrones Road, it depends on which part you live on, a little further past the park going towards Lupset isn't too bad.
The town centre is run down in parts, it's not a patch on what it used to be like, especially now the original market and market hall has gone.
Durkar is ok, a couple of minutes drive to the motorway, parts of Crigglestone and Hall Green are ok too.
Kettlethorpe high school is supposed to be a good school, but I don't know a lot about the schools in other area's of Wakefield.
It's got a great nightlife too, especially the Westgate run.
Other stuff to do....there's Newmillerdam, Pugneys, Sandal Castle, The sculpture park. Thornes Park, with play area, duckpond, cafe, golf and train etc.

purpleme12 · 22/08/2021 00:32

There's so many different schools it's hard to know where to start without knowing where you'd be

Confuzzlediddled · 22/08/2021 00:32

Meanwood has its issues too, I lived on meanwood road from 2010-2019 and definitely saw drug sales, stabbings, stolen cars, not sure why some people think it's a utopia!

Bodgedboxdye · 22/08/2021 01:09

Horbury is nice, the school is not (secondary)

Netherton is also lovely as is Middlestown and Overton. They all have beautiful scenery, Netherton has a lovely wood to walk around.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/08/2021 05:41

Have you looked between Leeds and Wakefield? LS25, LS26, LS27, LS28 or large parts of WF3 all offer good options.

Extraslice · 22/08/2021 07:29

We are looking in all the above areas too! We just missed out in a house in Otley.
I know it sounds an odd move but as I said in my pp, we have seen a gorgeous house there that fits our requirements. We need to love asap and there really isn’t a lot coming up at the moment.
I would be sad to move from here. I guess it comes down to the decision of house vs. area

We don’t want a new build

OP posts:
Extraslice · 22/08/2021 07:58

Wow thank you @BarbaraofSeville I like the first two. It does worry me when they have been listed a while though! When I don’t know the area well.

Katyy · 22/08/2021 08:21

Robin Hood WF3 and Rothwell LS26 both good areas with good schools. I’d also consider West ardsley quiet with a good primary school. Also Gildersome and Morley good schools ,supermarkets ,shopping centres close by. All close to Leeds 20 minute commute.

Brendabigbaps · 22/08/2021 08:37

We Moved my little family from chapel allerton to wakefield a few years ago, I’m CA born and bred, Best move we ever made!
It will however depend on your priorities.
In wakefield your not going to get lots of good bars and restaurants on the high street, maybe one if your lucky. There are lots of nice places to eat and drink but you usually have to travel.
Wakefield city centre is not leeds for either nightlife or shopping. The pubs/clubs are pretty grim and H&M is as modern as the shopping gets.
Luckily leeds is only a 15 min drive or a quick train ride. So I’d look at places with train stations.

Great for parks and things to do with kids though. And most people are friendly, there is hardly any of the yummy mummy looking down their nose shite that happens in north leeds.

So yes, it is a bit like going back in time but not in a bad way

MauveMagnolia · 22/08/2021 09:48

Gildersone and Morley are nothing like meanwood, they lack the diversity and culture

MauveMagnolia · 22/08/2021 09:50

Woodlesford is better than Robin Hood or Rothwell
Carlton?

MauveMagnolia · 22/08/2021 09:51

Are you white British?
If not then move to some of the areas listed with great caution

NommyChompers · 22/08/2021 10:03

Morley would be good for the commute and has good schools
