Weight and Hen do T-Shirt

68 replies

SpeckledlyHen · 16/08/2021 19:31

I have got myself into a bit of a state. A very good friend of mine is having her hen do this coming weekend. The friend that organised it has ordered us all T-Shirts to wear. I did mention in a private text message that I had put on a lot of weight and this was my worst nightmare.. Anyhow, the T-Shirts have arrived and we are due to turn up, change into them and then enjoy our day. I am so concerned it won't fit. I have told the friend about my concerns and am going to collect the T-shirt tomorrow to try it on and see if it fits. But what the hell am I going to do if it doesn't? She said it would be ok, she will pretend she forgot to order mine but it just will look a bit obvious and shit won't it? Even if it does fit, they are not really the best for someone on the larger side, I would prefer something that was a bit more flattering. I can't bear the thought of everyone wearing their T-shirts and me standing there like a pleb without one on. We are in our 50's.

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop

Try it on tomorrow If it doesn't fit, hot foot it to Primark and buy a plain black tee (or whatever the style of the top is) But some Wonderweb Cut out a square if the wording and wonderweb onto the new top.
This works. I've had to do this with various tshirts over the years as my autistic DS grows out of favourite ones. My lovely friend stitches the patch on via her sewing machine, but wondered would work for a one off.

Remember they want you there, whether you're wearing a bloody hen tshirt or not!

picklemewalnuts · 16/08/2021 19:59

I get the T-shirt stress! People don't realise how hard they are to wear for bigger sizes!

MotherOfDragons27 · 16/08/2021 20:00

It's just a T-shirt 🙄 wear a jacket over it, or don't wear it, nobody will care!

Hope it goes OK OP

First of all - she sounds like a good friend

Secondly - OP, I would either wear it and then put a cardigan over it

OR

Say you’ve put on a load of weight, which you’re losing but not really in frame of mind to wear tight clothing

Imagine a friend / acquaintance said this. Would you think ANYTHING negative about them?

No, you wouldn’t

skippy67 · 16/08/2021 20:05

@Russell19

Are the t shirts white as its not really the done thing to wear white on a hen do unless you're the bride.
🤣🤣🤣
JanisJ · 16/08/2021 20:13

Argh, I had to do this at a friends hen do a couple years ago. So awful.

Luckily the hen thought it was naff so we all took them off. God I hate matching T-shirt's.

Nobloat21 · 16/08/2021 20:20

Yeah I'd wear a tight white vest underneath so I'd definitely have the length sorted. I'd probably cut a v neck into the t-shirt and just say I was customising it. Cut down under the arms.

It'll probably fit anyway!

OchonAgusOchonOh · 16/08/2021 20:21

If I was you, I would be hoping it wouldn't fit. They are always cheap, clingy, horrible things that look good on nobody. I have large boobs and they are always crew or round neck so wouldn't suit me even if they fitted.

Your best bet is to wear something in a similar colour. Honestly, nobody will notice or care, other than to wish they had done the same as you

LemonRoses · 16/08/2021 20:22

@newnortherner111

I think you'd look better without it, even if you were a size 8 and in your 20s. One of the few positives of the pandemic is no tacky hen or stag dos.

Find out the colour and wear something the same or similar if you have it. Hope the wedding is lovely.

Exactly.
Chocolatecoatedkettlebell · 16/08/2021 20:27

Plain Ts are so meh and unflattering anyway so understand why you are dreading this. If the T-shirt fits in terms of size but doesn’t flatter there are a few things you can do to customise it and then you are “owning it” rather than hiding it if that’s something you are comfortable with.
Cut the neck out so you have a boat neck or v neck
Cut the sleeves into a cap sleeve
Cut some of the length off and/or cinch the waist with a hair tie and a coin/round badge off centre.
I hacked at a unisex T with my kitchen scissors and I think the unfinished seams add to the look. Layer on loads of simple jewellery. Promise it’s more flattering

No disrespect to the op but she’s a 50 something year old woman not Madonna.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 16/08/2021 20:47

I'm 52 and I'd just not do it.
Decide you are going to enjoy yourself. Tell anyone who asked that the t shirt really isn't you and crack on.
Seriously, I doubt you would be the only one! Or spill something down it within 30 seconds and change.

Bit harsh, I stand by my method for making unisex Ts more flattering but recognise the layering of jewellery might be a bit much for some.
Blufandango · 16/08/2021 20:55

I understand the t shirt problem and I hope you get sorted. Sometimes I get distressed about smaller things when I am anxious about something bigger even if I haven't realised. So if I was really upset about a top, I bet I would really be worried about the upcoming do and maybe hadn't worked that out. I've been known to do some rather odd things when I've been anxious, like drive to six supermarkets just for the right soap, for example. I'm not saying that's why you are stressed but it sometimes worth just checking if something else is worrying you. Anyway, I hope you get your top sorted and have a lovely time

KindChick · 16/08/2021 21:01

When I wear a T-shirt now I pop a long vest top underneath in same colour which covers my bum and tum! That plus a thinish float cardigan on top. It’s the thought once you are there you will be fine, all sorts of shapes and sizes.

JMAngel1 · 16/08/2021 21:01

@Chocolatecoatedkettlebell

I'm with you on this - I'm 49 and hack the hell out of my t shirts to make them more flattering .

Can't get my head around my age women in matching t shirts - I would not be wearing it Grin

Antinerak · 16/08/2021 21:05

If it doesn't fit, or you hate it, say you forgot it OR wear a dress/jumpsuit/anything that doesn't require a t shirt and say it didn't really go with what you were wearing.

If it's a little tight you could try what my sister does with t shirts- put it on, loop the bottom of it over the bedpost and lean away so it stretches and hope that it rips in the process and turn it into a bandana.

PragmaticWench · 16/08/2021 21:05

If it's a bit clingy and you decide to wear it under an open shirt, you can cut straight up the back but not up through the collar. If no collar, just cut up to mid shoulder blade level. It will still sit right around the front of the neckline but will give you more space around.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 16/08/2021 21:06

I suspect it will fit. It will look shit but I have a picture of me in my 20s and a size 10-12 looking shit in one of these t shirts. They always look shit!

I do the same - long vest in same or contrasting colour.

Plain boxy tee shirt is no-ones friend x
