What's your favourite ready-made pizza? 🍕

DH is currently on holidays (teacher) and I'm working, so he is doing a lot of the dinners at the moment. Since his cooking is, err, limited, at least one meal a week tends to be pizza chucked in the oven and some salad alongside. We don't have any "regular" (tbh, tends to be whichever is 2-for-1, on special or whatever) but the DC are constantly saying "that one we had last week / on Monday / in April was waaaaay nicer".

So, has anyone got any recommendations? I'm sure someone's going to disapprove of feeding DC pizza but I don't think once a week hurts. No vegan/wholewheat/cauliflower options since DH the kids won't eat!

I like the Chicago Town stuffed crust ones that are meant to be like takeaway pizza. I think it's the raw dough in these ones that make them taste 'fresher' than ones bought from the fridge with a pre-booked base.

Also worth mentioning the raw pizza bases you can buy in the fridge in Aldi, for the nights when you have a few more minutes and enough stuff that could feasibly be pizza toppings in the fridge.

I'm going to swing by the Co-op on my way home from work and grab a couple of their very highly recommended pizzas! Any specific recommendations? DD2 and DS like pretty much everything except Hawaiian and very strong flavour cheese, like Gorgonzola. They are fine with veg and spicy things. DD1 only likes Margherita, so that's always one of the choices.

About making pizza, I kind of agree with pp that feel it isn't worth the effort. We don't have a massive freezer so it's never really an option to freeze massive batches and things. Pizza tends to be DH's meal and he is really cooking-illiterate (as in, he will willingly heat things up, toast things, put things in ovens and throw together a salad, but that's about as far as it goes). And on the rare occasions I did make it from scratch, I just found it quite underwhelming. And then you have the question of what to do with the 3/4 leftover passata, etc.

We also have a child (DD1) who will eat virtually nothing - not to go into massive amounts of detail but she has neurological issues, side effects of which are severe OCD and food-refusal - and shop pizza is one of the few things she will eat a slice or two of. I'm happy to pay a bit extra money to get her off her diet of yoghurt and rice cakes and the occasional (single) grape.

Morrisons Hoisin Pork or Pesto Chicken are amazing. The Tesco Chargrilled veg one is lovey with some chilli flakes chucked on. Also the Tesco Big Night In ones with the stuffed crust always go down a treat here on a pizza night (always on a deal of 2 pizzas, 2 sides/desserts and dips for £10) we will cook it all and either have cold pizza the next day or get 2 desserts and stick at least one in freezer for another day.

There’s an Aldi cheese and tomato deep pan one for 89p! It’s much nicer than many others I’ve tried. My kids love it

TheBestSpoon · 10/08/2021 08:48

The Tesco frozen Mediterranean veg one is fantastic. There's some sort of cheesy sauce on it that's just magic...

BarbaraofSeville · 10/08/2021 08:51

@LubaLuca. Are they rolled out, or do you have to do it yourself? It's the shaping of the pizza that I find a real faff, I just CBA with it and don't seem to do it successfully, but I like my pizza thin and crispy.

On the matter of toppings OP, I'd just get what looks good to you. To me chicken, anything spicy or anything 'non traditional' like hoisin pork (sorry Barry) on a pizza is an abomination and I only like peppers, onions, mushrooms, artichokes, olives or capers, or could stretch to something like ham, mushroom and mascapone.

But that's clearly unusual judging by the endless of choice of pepperoni or spicy chicken pizzas that seem to dominate.

Sainsbury's goats cheese and caramelised onion pizza is lovely it's in the fridge section it's my favourite pizza and something a-bit different from a standard mozzarella pizza

longtompot · 10/08/2021 10:59

Their current range, just depends what your store sells www.coop.co.uk/products/pizza

BarbaraofSeville · 10/08/2021 11:09

Ooh, those Co-op ones look nice. I bet they don't have the ones I want (spinach and ricotta or pancetta, mushroom and mascarpone) in our small and quite useless Co-op.

However, we do have a couple of much larger ones a few miles away - more like Aldi sized than convenience store. I bet they'll have them.

MydogWillow · 10/08/2021 11:17

@BikeRunSki

CoOp posh ones. Purple boxes. Tesco posh ones. Black boxes.
I second this.
LubaLuca · 10/08/2021 16:38

@BarbaraofSeville - they're rolled flat and round, but rolled up like a swiss roll for easy packaging I suppose. They come on their own baking paper, so very easy to do.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 10/08/2021 16:39

Crosta & mollica.

Jourdain11 · 12/08/2021 19:35

Thanks to everyone for the recommendations! I grabbed a few of the Co-op ones the other day and they went down very well. Tried the Margherita with sunsoaked tomatoes and the Salami Diavola (I think). DD2 and DS were all over the salami one, which annoyed DH because he barely managed to snaffle a slice! And food-avoiding DD1 actually ate two slices of the Margherita, which is the most of anything she's eaten in months. Unfortunately they were all too piggish to leave any for me ("but there's lots of salad left, mummy"). I'll have to buy more next time!

Next on the menu are going to be the Chicago ones - will see how they go down!

@DrRichardBurke

Crosta and mollica

Excellent

I get these from Ocado They are the very best
MrsMariaReynolds · 12/08/2021 19:43

Chicago Town stuffed crust is good. It comes as frozen uncooked (Franken)dough. Yum 😋

Jourdain11 · 12/08/2021 21:03

I got one tomato stuffed crust, one Tiger crust and one cheesy stuffed crust. But all plain ones - I don't love pepperoni, it makes too much oil when you cook it!
