What free gifts with magazines do you remember fondly?

I loved the gifts that came with magazines. Some were of course crap, like no name mascaras and nail sets that had the magazine branding on them, utter rubbish.

Others were brilliant, I remember fondly:

Lipstick case with sugar magazine

A clear plastic tote with Elle, which I still miss

A small denim bag, again, Elle, which i still have

Various clutch bags with glamour magazine

Roomy beach bags with Red magazine

T shirts with Instyle magazine

Silk scarves, High st mascaras, bikinis

I really miss those little freebies. It's better for the environment that they don't do those any more of course.

Also, I really miss magazines from the late 90s, which is when I started reading them, they were great and many are defunct now.

Red magazine had the best beach bags, I threw one out when it went mouldy in the last year or two.
My best freebie was a hypnosis cassette tape by Paul McKenna which I listened to every night for years!! I think that was New Woman magazine.
Also fondly remember the Black Lace books.

PickAChew · 06/08/2021 17:09

I got a good sized bottle of REN evercalm day cream with Red magazine. The magazine itself was bizarre but I saved a fair chunk on the price of the moisturiser.

PickAChew · 06/08/2021 17:12

I have an assortment of Good Food mag spatulas, too.

A black clutch bag that went everywhere with me, everyone seemed to have the same one too, lasted years. Must've been mid to late 90s.
Also some molten brown eye cream, was plumping brilliant and when I could finally afford some I went to the brighton branch but was told it had been discontinued!
I do miss the smelly pages from magazines.

SquirryTheSquirrel · 06/08/2021 17:16

Going back to the 1980s, I remember something called 'The Jackie Book of Destiny' which was a sort of oracle - you asked it questions then closed your eyes and picked a symbol which corresponded with an answer.

My considerably more woo and superstitious early-teen self relied on it like a Bible for a few months.

Southlandssue · 06/08/2021 17:50

@megletthesecond

This is the same one as mine

Snozzlemaid · 06/08/2021 18:06

@Chasingsquirrels That's the one I had. Used it for years and years.
I miss those days of teen magazines.
I've become strangely nostalgic over a comb.

Snozzlemaid · 06/08/2021 18:09

Found the front page for the comb edition https://images.app.goo.gl/PZFcHW6tYWQnVLFS7

SquirryTheSquirrel · 06/08/2021 18:15

Oh, yes - that's my pink comb! Though the branding on the handle has long since worn off!

Bananalanacake · 06/08/2021 18:20

A Sylvanian Family mouse with Mandy one Easter, I still have it.
A black vest with Minx.
Black make up bag with Marie Claire.

Chasingsquirrels · 06/08/2021 18:25

Well, if I paid 50p for that issue of J17 and am still using my comb 33 years later, it was 50p well spent!

PivotPivotPivottt · 06/08/2021 18:30

This has just reminded me that there was magazine in the early 00s that had a series of different books as the free gift with each issue. I can't remember what the magazine was and I can't remember the name of the books but they were all about step families and every character in each book was somehow linked to each other through new marriages. One of the characters I remember was a spoilt child called Persephone with the nick name Pepsi. I've just had a look of Google but having no luck does anyone remember something similar? I think the books were probably aimed at older children but I was in my early teens when I collected them I'm sure.

Tobebythesea · 06/08/2021 18:50

I’ve got some flip flops free with Glamour magazine 10 years ago that are still going strong for weekly swimming pool trips.

MercyBooth · 06/08/2021 20:50

@allfurcoatnoknickers I bought Kosheens album Kokapelli in August 2003. I saw them perform Its All In My Head on the Big Breakfast a few weeks earlier and loved it. I remember hearing Catch on the radio a lot in my previous office job the previous year.

SunSeaSurfGin · 06/08/2021 21:28

I only chucked away some of the makeup which came with Mizz when I was having a sort out during lockdown. Still have a make up brush it's just a good size

Still have some thin glittery scarves from the Sclub 7 magazine

SunSeaSurfGin · 06/08/2021 21:29

@Lyricallie

Oh I remember the Sabrina the teenage witch magazine and it came with a purple sparkily make up box. Then you had to collect all the make up!
Yesss!!! That was my make up box until about 3 years ago. I loved all the compartments

Think I had some of the make up way past it's sell by date from Sabrinas Magazine too

SunSeaSurfGin · 06/08/2021 21:33

@MercyBooth

Got some free sunglasses from Tatler a couple of months ago.
They are my favourite sunglasses they do them most years. I missed this years I thought they hadn't done them because of covid
newtothenet · 06/08/2021 21:46

@queenjaneappro

A blue wide tooth comb from Just 17 that I still use. Must be over 25 years old!
Mine broke a year ago after 25 years of daily use. I'm not ashamed to say I cried. I think they all had different slogans mine said "You are gorgeous, oh yes you are".
MimsyBorogroves · 06/08/2021 21:55

@ifigoup I came here to say 'Do You Remember the First Time' too!

Bought it on kindle recently for the memories.

newtothenet · 06/08/2021 22:33

@OhWhyNot

The book Go Ask Alice from Just 17

It really moved me. I still have the copy. I know it turned out not to be a true story but I think it’s well written abs connects with teenagers. I think that would have been about 32 years ago

A pink and black tote bag from Cosmopolitan. You could turn it inside out for so two bags in one. Used it for years abs would see a number of other people using it

Various CD’s one from Cosmopolitan with summer laid back tunes I still listen to in the car and various others one a tribute to Amy Winehouse I think from Q.

A few books and makeup items from Red

I loved the little gifts

Go ask Alice!! I wish I still had mine.
stealingbeauty · 06/08/2021 22:38

@CrepuscularCritter

I still have that clutch bag from Glamour too.

I remember getting so many beach bags, sunnies and nail polishes, and even a plastic pouch from Bunty that I kept for years. And CDs from Q. But my favourite magazine gifts were zip top purses from Anya Hindmarch that cane with something like Tatler or Vogue that I never normally bought. Still carrying my holiday jewellery and currency a good decade later.

I’ve got the Anya Hindmarch purse too! That was a really good free gift. I still use it and love it.

I also remember a purple comb from Shout magazine, and I remember getting a lilac and green sarong from a magazine too.

I remember getting a book called Diving In (maybe from It’s Bliss) which I read again recently for the nostalgia.

SophieGiroux · 06/08/2021 22:55

I remember getting a lot of Nails Inc varnishes from Glamour magazine. I used to buy loads of the same copy just to get the different colours as it was still cheaper than buying them.

MercyBooth · 07/08/2021 00:34

@SunSeaSurfGin This year is the first time i tried them. They are just the right size for my face.

What magazines or magazine freebies do you remember?

I miss minx magazine and that one that was only out briefly, I can't remember what it was called now 🙄 it was weekly, had current affairs stories, a focus story, I remember one being about fgm, and it had a weekly TV guide at the back too, but it was a proper, interesting magazine, not like this closer and other dumbed down bollocks we mainly have now.
MercyBooth · 07/08/2021 01:49

Minx. i remember getting a sample of it free with More.

Ive just spent a few nostalgic hours on e bay looking at the covers and contents pages of old copies of New Woman and Eve. Three hours + just flew by.
