Mushroom. Fucking. Risotto.

We're on a rare trip away, been looking forward to it for ages especially about having some lovely food.

Now I discover tonight's veggie option is mushroom risotto. Mushroom. Fucking. Risotto.

What's the meal that makes your heart sink?

I think I would be ok with a mushroom risotto ! Went out for dinner last night and had a spelt risotto with chunks of butternut squash and fried sage. It was delicious so they can be done well.

My pet hate is when the veggie option is a Thai or Indian curry in a provincial pub with an otherwise English menu. The sauce is always a generic jar from bookers with claggy microwaved rice - I’d have gone to an authentic restaurant if I wanted a curry! It manages to insult not just the veggies but the cuisine of half a hemisphere

LubaLuca · 01/08/2021 16:39

Goat cheese is the worst for me. Why don't restaurants ever use one of the hundreds of cheeses that are nice, instead of assuming vegetarians all enjoy the actual taste of a farmyard?

NavigatingAdolescence · 01/08/2021 16:42

@BastardMonkfish

This is the veggie menu of a hotel we sometimes stay at, some options are more inspired than others but there is plenty of choice and the pasta is delicious.
And yet I still can’t eat anything on it without modification. Confused
itcouldhave · 01/08/2021 16:45

I am a pescatarian but often eat veggie food when out because I’m sick of fucking sea bass and crushed potatoes.

What really, really pisses me off about vegetarian food in restaurants now is that they conflate vegetarian with vegan and only serve a vegan option thinking it caters for vegetarian too.

No it fucking doesn’t! We like cheese and eggs! Fuck off with your baked lentil and butternut squash crustless tart with beetroot compote!

Nydj · 01/08/2021 16:47

Yep, anything with goats cheese, mushroom fucking risotto, anything with butternut squash. I like butternut squash but for me, any dish containing it needs to some some extra texture like toasted seeds and a fair some heat and tanginess to offset the sweetness of the squash - restaurants don’t seem to have received the memo with my taste preferences.

PurpleDaisies · 01/08/2021 16:47

Meaning what? The cheese is specifically listed as vegetarian?

PurpleDaisies · 01/08/2021 16:48

Ignore my previous post, misread yourself!

happydays2345 · 01/08/2021 16:48

I would go elsewhere 😰

Yes! Totally agree with the need for cheese to make the one veggie option in restaurant menu palatable!
HumbugWhale · 01/08/2021 16:52

I agree! Veggie and can't stand mushrooms but they seem to be the default veggie meal. Someone even told me once they'd made mushrooms "so I would have something a bit meaty". If I wanted something meaty I wouldn't be veggie!
The other thing that winds me up is menus that have all the meat and fish dishes described and then just say "vegetarian option available" or "vegetarian dish of the day". Why aren't I allowed to find out what it is, or better still, have a choice?! Most places are much better now, it's usually very rural pubs that are still like this.

Yes!!! This pisses me off too.

I’m allergic to tomatoes (and other nightshades), and don’t eat grains/carbs. Have actually stopped eating diary the last few months but could make my peace with that.
NavigatingAdolescence · 01/08/2021 16:54

*dairy

Yep. Already said that.

I think to be fair, that’s a very specific and very limiting set of allergies and preferences. I can’t imagine any restaurant having dishes on a standard menu that met all off those requirements. It must be very difficult eating out.

TheOrigRights · 01/08/2021 16:57

When I fly I always order the Asian Vegetarian meal option.

Yum. However, where the regular meals often seem to get a GU desert and butter for their bread roll, my meal usually comes with fruit salad and spread.

I am vegetarian not vegan!

It is.

I’ve spent 3 days planning (so far) where to eat for a 10 day break in this country. I do eat some fish so that helps a bit.

TofuDelights · 01/08/2021 17:03

Parmesan!! It's either not Parmesan or it's not vegetarian - it can't be both. Parmesan has a PDO which means it can never be vegetarian. So many places list Parmesan on their so-called veggie meals and it really gets my goat!! (I seem to be in a minority of actually liking goat's cheese!) Grin

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 01/08/2021 17:06

Mushroom risotto is my favourite meal…

Maggiesfarm · 01/08/2021 17:10

I like mushroom risotto, can I come?

waitingpatientlyforspring · 01/08/2021 17:11

@toastofthetown

I like mushroom risotto (though it is an uninspired choice). For me it's the only veggie option being goats cheese.
I'm making mushroom risotto for tea soon as really fancy it.

Like you @toastofthetown, its when the only vegi option has goats cheese. This always happens at Christmas parties. I have to go with the vegan option which means I get fruit salad for dessert rather than a proper pud ☹️

Deathraystare · 01/08/2021 17:19

I am now Pescatarian but since I was 21 (now 61) I was veggie. I know what you mean about mushroom risotto. I love it but too often it is bland also it used to be the only veggie thing. That or veggie lasagne. I have had too many 'mean cuisine' version of that!

Pisses me off when I go out with carnivores. They take hours choosing. I have already checked out the only veggie thing, now sadly normally some sweet potato or squash thing. They ask what I am having and, because a vegetarian can't possibly read a menu properly, they have to look through and find a chicken and ham something - or something with beef in it!

I did once go to a vegetarian restaurant and the only thing I could have was a n aubergine 'schnitzel'. Luckily I like aubergines. Every other veggie thing has Jerusalem artichoke in it! It was seasonal and I hate it!!!

RubyGoat · 01/08/2021 17:19

My nightmare vegetarian options have always been packet quiche, or quorn anything. Packet quiche usually has pastry like dried up nursery paste & a horrible slimy tomato layer under the egg, & quorn makes me feel really queasy (unsurprising since it’s essentially shaped, flavoured mould).

Crowsaregreat · 01/08/2021 17:26

I'm not veggie any more but my heart used to sink at veggie risotto too. They make it in bulk, freeze portions and then microwave it for you. You pay the same as someone having rump steak and chips. Fuck that.

Crowsaregreat · 01/08/2021 17:29

When faced with a menu that was obv contemptuous of vegetarianism, I used to just order sides eg salad and chips. Usually nicer and cheaper
