We're on a rare trip away, been looking forward to it for ages especially about having some lovely food.

Now I discover tonight's veggie option is mushroom risotto. Mushroom. Fucking. Risotto.

What's the meal that makes your heart sink?

Oh yes. Mozzer’s veggie full English is awesome. His the spot perfectly after a hard night (unfortunately now due to emergency shift work rather than partying). Not eating meat doesn’t mean I don’t want carbs and fried stuff!

Ddot · 06/08/2021 20:27

OP you need to vote on the worst food offered, I think the iceberg cut in half gets it upto now.

Greenlittle · 06/08/2021 20:29

What is the “skin” used for a veggie sausage? The meat ones use intestine lining or something?

CompleteBarstool · 06/08/2021 21:02

I remember the first time I flew as a veggie, about 30 years ago .... there was an announcement over the tannoy on the plane "please could passenger Barstool make themselves known to the cabin crew".
I was Shock

I was convinced they'd left my baggage behind or had thought they'd found something dodgy in my suitcases.

If you think that’s embarrassing try being coeliac and eating in TGI Fridays . Pre lockdown I was in there with my son and coeliac daughter , she got given the gluten free menu on the iPad and when we ordered the waiter took our order and they had to fetch the manager to take the GF order . He literally knelt by the table and was explaining the menu to my 20 year old like she was about 4 . He then had to deliver the meal and take her dessert order etc . I don’t know if they still do it as my daughter now refuses to eat there .

I have a gluten intolerance but I'm not coeliac, its bloody hard to find anything in the shops never mind in a restaurant. I just get gut ache and fart alot 😖

@CompleteBarstool, several decades ago my dad either on a contract in Saudi Arabia, which he hated and managed to pull some strings to get out of it early, in slightly unorthodox circumstances. He was on the plane to go home and an announcement was made asking him to make himself known to the cain crew. He very tentatively raised his hand..,,, “Ah Mr Bike, we just wanted to know who to give the vegetarian meal to”. I don’t think he’d ever been so glad to have all his fingers!

Ye gods threads like this make me so glad I live in Brighton where there's a vegan/vegetarian restaurant on every corner! And I'm a carnivore; I just like the variety and for my plant/based friends not to feel like an inconvenience

@BikeRunSki

the cain crew?

In Saudi Arabia I'd have been worried too. 😉

With you on mushroom risotto. Mushroom anything is vile. I’m veggie and I HATE seeing mushroom for the vegetarian main!

It’s the same in Wagamama. DH has a serious allergic reaction to a certain kind of mushroom that is common in Asian cooking. If he goes there the manager has to come over to take his order. To make it worse we didn’t realise that the manager was the partner of a friend of a friend who hates us!

Many years ago, I remember being served the wrong meal on an Air France flight. The steward took the meal away and returned with my vegetarian option. You guessed it - it was exactly the same plate, with the meat portion removed.
violetbunny · 07/08/2021 04:21

I don't understand how it's so hard for people to comprehend and plan a main meal without meat. And I'm not even vegetarian. We have meat-free meals often. Delicious veggie curries, veggie enchiladas, lentil cottage pie... it's not difficult!

Ddot · 07/08/2021 07:14

The one time I traveled by plane, ended up with two bread buns, mine and the persons I was travelling with. Information that a non meat eater was sitting on their plane had gotten lost in transit. Same on way back! Luckily I had bum rot (food poisoning) and didnt feel upto eating.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 07/08/2021 07:38

I love mushroom risotto, but make a point of not going to places with only one, unimaginitive, veggie option which I could make at home. Did you not read the menu in advance? I always study menus before booking somewhere.

Zolrets · 07/08/2021 10:51

I think the manager taking the order in restaurants is to do with allergies. Don’t staff have to be trained re: reactions and of a seniority that they can be expected to bear responsibility/ be held accountable? If you have severe allergic reactions that can only be a good thing.

Oh yes. I always look online first and if it’s mushroom risotto I don’t go. However that’s not always possible when going with a large group.
