Eating our 10-a-day thread

I would like to try to start a project of getting my 10-a-day of fruit and veg in every day.

Anyone fancy joining me? I find groups on here of support so useful.

I know lentils and beans and chickpeas are part of it too so I will up them. I'm vegan so I'm hoping that should make things easier as I eat lentils as part of my diet anyway.

This thread is for everyone who would like to focus on 'eating the rainbow' as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Or anyone who does this already who has any hints and tips?

Well I made it. Didn't even end up cooking my pizza because I was so full from all the lovely salads and veg.

  1. Apple
  2. Watermelon
  3. Olives
  4. Houmous/guacamole
  5. Celery/carrot/cucumber
  6. Beetroot/red peppers
  7. Sundried tomatoes/peas
  8. Lettuce
  9. Cannelini beans/aduki beans
10. Butternut squash

And a few more probably mixed in but not full portions.

I'm not a saint, we did have a McDonalds on the way up in the car. I'm pretty sure that thr veggie dippers don't have enough veg in them to count though 🤣

Wildernesstips reading about everyone's meals is great, isn't it!

Well done everyone for doing your best to get vegged up even on difficult days.

Breathmiller that spread sounds delicious. I do love having a variety of salad bits and raw veg so I'm going to keep focusing on enjoying those. It can be expensive to buy ready made, or time consuming to prep though, can't it?

Yesterday went better than I expected too... At the lunch venue I negotiated a nice vegan salad with beetroot, roasted peppers, walnuts and hummus. (3) It originally had goats cheese but I swopped for the hummus. And Mr Narwhal compromised on Indian food rather than chips, so I had a lovely spicy chickpea dhal, onion bhaji and a lot of steamed veg on the side. (4)

I also had a slice of cake but it was carrot cake 🥕Grin
Oh and a giant satsuma. (1)
I think together with my smoothie (2) that was 10 in total.

Tiredandbored · 21/08/2021 13:03

I had roast veg with halloumi for my lunch - at least 5-6 portions I reckon. Have also had sultanas, a banana and some grapes, so am close to 10 already today.

Weekly total is 49... Just need one more today to achieve my goal!

Also, find the photos very inspiring.

Peach
Onion
Pepper
Apple
Courgette
Mushrooms x 2
Potato
Tomato

One more! One more!

Drybird2020 · 21/08/2021 19:26

It's working! I had an iced coffee which was not a healthy choice but otherwise I'm so full of veg there's no room or time to consume anything else.

Breakfast; tomatoes and mushrooms with toast (and eggs and veggie sausage)

Lunch; carrot and coriander soup

Tea; veggie gratin made with peppers x 2, courgette, onion, leek, pak choi and root veg chips (carrot, parsnip and kohlrabi)

And some grapes

MinesAMassiveSalad · 21/08/2021 19:30

Blackberries 1
Satsuma 1
Green salad and tomato 1
Courgette 1
Red pepper 1
Broccolli 1

  1. Really wasn't trying hard enough!😉 But I was just going on new habits and outstripped my old normal which would likely have been the single portion of salad and two veg with dinner. So I'm ok with that!
TheNarwhalBalloon · 21/08/2021 20:43

Raspberries, peach and melon with yogurt and seeds for breakfast (2)
Miso soup for lunch... It was so tasty and had lots of spring onions, nori, spinach and tofu in, but going by veg portion weight it only counts as 1 portion sadly.
Dinner was chips, but I did have mushy peas with it as suggested, so that was 1 portion.
Snacks : apple, satsuma, banana... Probably 4 portions

8 in total. Quite pleased considering the chip situation Grin

Breathmiller · 21/08/2021 21:22

Well done everyone, so good to hear how well everyone is doing.

I'm still on holiday and it is a birthday weekend and still feel I managed to make some good choices.

We had a Brew Dog burger huge takeout and on top of the vegan burger (which was a amazing) i had sweet potato fries instead of potato ones and had the cauliflower 'wings'.

For breakfast when everyone had pastries I added in lots of fruit and everyone tucked in.

Then for lunch I had a small bowl of the leftover salads from yesterday.

We also went out for the famous local gelato and we had cake after dinner but I feel I have eaten well and made some better choices compared to those I would usually do in this situation. So here is my day today...

  1. Cherries
  2. Blueberries
  3. Butternut squash salad m&S/spinach/roasted red pepper
  4. Tomatoes
  5. Avocado salad/corn/aduki beans
  6. Sweet potato
  7. Cauliflower (maybe half a portion as I was too full)
I will maybe tuck into some strawberries too as everyone is still drinking and snacking.

Well done everyone! I'm definitely feeling an improvement in energy levels, is anyone else?

Brunch
Mushrooms
Baked beans (with poached eggs, bacon & toast)
Dinner
Red pepper
More mushrooms
Carrot/onion
Kimchi
Courgette noodles (with Chinese chicken)
Orange

Tiredandbored · 21/08/2021 22:25

Well, I achieved my target of 50 in a week!

In various salads I have eaten lettuce, spinach, rocket, avocado, beetroot, cucumber, lemon, mangetout, olives, sugarsnap peas and tomatoes.

In my main meals I've had broccoli, carrot, cauliflower, celery, chickpeas, courgette, garlic, ginger, green beans, kale, kidney beans, leeks, lentils, mushrooms, pak choi, parsnip, peas, pepper, potato, onion, sweetcorn and sweet potato.

For snacks during the week I've had apple, banana, watermelon, blackberry, strawberries, sultanas, blueberries, raspberries, cherries, grapes, kiwi, pineapple, pear, peach, mango, orange and melon.

I'm glad I succeeded, but I'll not be trying this again! Too much planning and shopping needed, though it did introduce me to some foods I wouldn't normally eat which is good.

SmallGreenStripes · 22/08/2021 07:18

Hi all, I have come over from the Freedom thread , I used to be Trees, 18 months or so of no booze, now ready to take on the next challenge!

Please can I join? I would like to eat more fruit and veg (and less other stuff!)

SmallGreenStripes · 22/08/2021 10:24

Ok, made a good start with strawberries and blueberries with a spoon of Greek yogurt for breakfast Smile

Alternista · 22/08/2021 10:47

Oh i like this thread!
A typical day for me is:
Apple
Satsuma
Watermelon
Salad for lunch with carrot, tomatoes, cucumber, beetroot- maybe 2 servings in all?
Veg with and/or AS dinner- broccoli, butternut, green beans, tomatoes.
Theres usually some sort of beans somewhere in my day too.
So i reckon my average day is 6-7; it would be a great challenge to get consistently to 10.

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 22/08/2021 11:50

Hello new and old 😊

Managed 7 yesterday (because I didn't eat any with lunch 🙄). Will try harder today

Kiwi
Peach
Tomato
Dates
Cauliflower
Butternut squash
Swiss chard

SmallGreenStripes · 22/08/2021 12:23

Ok, lunch - spelt salad with red peppers, celery, tomatoes, onions and halloumi. Not sure how many portions of veg - 4?

Breathmiller · 22/08/2021 12:26

That looks nice and fresh. I posted a link to the nhs amounts of each thing that you need for a portion. Or someone else mentioned weights?

OP posts:
SmallGreenStripes · 22/08/2021 12:31

Thanks @Breathmiller, I went back and had a look - it was 4.5 portions, didn’t get any for the onion, you need a whole onion for a portion! It was delicious. Really like the approach of trying to eat more of something healthy rather than less of something unhealthy Smile

Alternista · 22/08/2021 17:24

Ok, today’s tally here:

  1. Apple
  2. Portion of beans
  3. Two satsumas
  4. Another apple
  5. Tomatoes
  6. Mixed peppers and onion
  7. Broccoli
  8. A peach

A bit repetitive but I’m low on fresh stuff till the food shop comes tomorrow.

PyjamaFan · 22/08/2021 19:16

I've always cooked from scratch but attempting 10 a day is making me cook even healthier choices. Today's tally...

Breakfast was melon, strawberries and a banana, 3.

Lunch was homemade mushroom soup made with onions, garlic and mushrooms, followed by a satsuma, 2.

Mid afternoon snack of grapes, 1.

Dinner was chicken hotpot which contained kale and cauliflower, with a portion of asparagus, followed by cherry cobbler, 3.

So 9 altogether. I could have increased this by making a different soup, but it was so delicious!

MinesAMassiveSalad · 22/08/2021 19:20

1 Onion, mushroom, tomato
2 Beetroot, garden lollo rosso, coriander
3 Courgette/ red pepper
4 Carrot
5 Mixed beans, tomato, broccolli, chili
6 Green salad, avocado, coriander, lime

It felt like more portions! I guess that was the variety: included the leftovers and final pickings from the lettuce patch. All very delicious. So I have to be happy with that!

Breathmiller · 22/08/2021 19:53

Well done everyone.

I think today was probably my worst day at it. We were on the last of the food at the air b&b then packing up and driving home to a house with no shopping. But i made it as much as I could.

I did also eat pretty badly on top of this list. Just shows again that when I plan better and fill myself up with lots and lots of healthy veg and fruit, i don't need other stuff. But...it was a birthday weekend and not the normal routine and I think I did okay ish so I'm not berating myself.

It will be a learning curve on how to manage to choose better even when out of routines and tired.

  1. Cherries/strawberries
  2. brambles/blueberries
  3. Olives
  4. Sweet potato
  5. Roasted peppers
  6. Apple

I have a (sort of) day off tomorrow at home so I plan to go get a shop amd make some healthy dishes to pop in the freezer for later in in the week when I'm busy. Maybe some soups.
