too good to go food waste app - anyone else use it?

Huge fan of this app - friend told me about it over lockdown and after I'd had my first "magic bag" I was hooked! The basic idea is that you pay for a lucky bag of food from a local retailer which would otherwise have gone in the bin. Picked up a bag from a M&S petrol station shop last night, cost me £4, got two large packs of salmon, two panini wraps, two packs of sandwiches, a side salad, a bag of mixed veg, and a pack of melon. Greggs also do bags which the kids enjoy - most of the bags we've had from there have a couple of the bakes, sausage rolls, cakes, pastries.

Yes it's all short-dated, yellow sticker stuff but lots can be frozen. Or eaten the next day. Definitely worth looking at if you're flexible about what you eat. Lots of restaurants do it too, although pick up times can be much later in the evening.

Any other fans???

I bought one once out of curiosity more than anything from a bakery we often use. Paid around £4 and got 2 x sandwiches, 2 x cream slices and 2 x sausage rolls. Would have been about £12 full price so really good value. Would definitely do it again.

Never heard of Karma. Definitely not available in Scotland! Slightly different idea it appears in that they are offering discounted individual meals rather than bags of ingredients/groceries/baked stuff.

Any apps which reduce food going into landfill are a good thing.

I’ve just looked at Karma - nothing all that close (ie convenient) to home or work. Pity! I like the look of the ‘fruit and veg’ bags.

wizbit93 · 29/07/2021 08:44

We love it. We usually get an M&S bag once a fortnight. It always has great things in it, usually salad, fruit, sandwiches, a couple of ready meals and a couple of bakery items. We've had a cooked half chicken before!
The funniest one though was a Spar one- 13 packs of bacon and a loaf of bread! Grin Luckily it was freezable!

Vanilla1Cookies · 29/07/2021 08:47

I had one near me and to be honest it was full of utter crap.

I had chocolate bars, packs of biscuits, some loaf cake.

I deleted the app after that.

Vanilla1Cookies · 29/07/2021 09:01

Iv Read a bit of this thread and re downloaded the app to give it another go.

A local farm shop has come up. It’s a huge farm and has a farm shop other things onsite ( I wanted this one last time but it never come up).

I shop in there anyway so I know the kind of products they sale.

£15 it’s meant to be worth and I had to pay £5.

Collection at 4.30.

Let’s see, il blame the OP if it’s utter crap Grin

I'd love it if this turned into a thread of people showing photos of their magic bag hauls Grin
Vanilla1Cookies · 29/07/2021 09:27

Il add a picture once I have collected it Grin I have rabbits so any veg we won’t eat will go to them. Grin

Returnoftheowl · 29/07/2021 10:45

I've recently signed up, but still haven't managed to get a magic bag. The ones around here seen to get snapped up instantly and I've never seen a bag available. The M&S one was reserved at 00:01 this morning!

Even if I put in a area next to a m&s I can’t get a m&s to come up at all!
Vanilla1Cookies · 29/07/2021 11:22

Well I just checked the app again to try and get m&s to come up but instead a parsons bakery did near me (wasn’t there earlier).

Collection lands in a 15 min slot only but it’s perfect timing as I need to get my son right next to if at collection time.

For £3.99 I bought it Blush fingers crossed there is something I can give my kids in there for tea tonight with a pudding Grin

1 x pack of 2 chorizo and cheddar stuffed mushrooms
1 x pack of 6 oak smoked cheddar and sundried tomato mini stuffed mushrooms
1 x big bag of leafy greens
1 x basil plant
1 x pack of basil
6 x courgettes
1 x bag of salad
1 x bag of radishes
1 x pack of chives
1 x box of mushrooms

And a picture of my kids in the park which I didn’t mean to click. Ffs.
I will report that now to be removed.

Vanilla1Cookies · 29/07/2021 17:03

This was from the farm shop.

Not too bad. Could be better though I think

How much was that?

TheGenealogist · 29/07/2021 17:17

That's an excellent haul @fuckingsickofcovid - although I hope your kids like cucumbers....

That’s great. I don’t have a Morrison’s close!
PurpleBag · 29/07/2021 17:53

@iklboo

We've done this a couple of times for our local Greggs. Got loads of stuff. I'm going to try the Spar one next to see what's in that.
I found Spar and Scotmid are usually quite good. Had all sorts from there and it can usually be frozen.
fuckingsickofcovid · 29/07/2021 17:55

I have frozen 5 cucumbers, I don't know if they freeze okay but I thought it was worth a try. It was only £3.09 for all of it so I'll definitely be trying it again. That bakery one looks rather delicious!

They'll come out soft and a bit "collapsed" but you can use them to make summer cucumber soups like this one:
