Centre Parcs - code brown

So I'm guessing there are other mumsnetters at the centre Parcs this weekend which has just had a code brown closing the whole pool. We hadn't it even got in! (Could have been worse 😀)

So that's annoying. Really annoying. If you child isn't well don't take them to a fecking pool. If your child is young use a swim nappy and maintain vigilance. How hard can it be?

Like a previous poster I think there should be better enforcement of the happy nappy layer. My first daughter did a number of vile poos in the pool that were totally contained by the happy nappy but had leaked from her swim nappy underneath. The clean up was vile but the happy nappy worked and protected other pool users. The disposable ones just aren’t good enough in their own unfortunately.

My now 17 year old was at a swimming lesson age 4 when a child vomited. They carried on and. Chased the vomit around with a net.
I grabbed my daughter put of the pool... I have emmetophobia

Well, this thread is just fucking marvellous. Swimming was literally the only form of exercise I don’t mind, and now the revelations that (a) shitting in the pool isn’t uncommon and (b) the shit is just scooped out and that’s it, you can get back in the pool, have put me off for life.

The chlorine in a public pool should kill any bacteria. If it smells chloriney then it means the water isn't filtered enough. I run our pool at home, now think I might bring my own testing sticks next time I swim in a public pool.

12 hours?! Must have been really bad. I’m sure it was under an hour when we were there (though it was our going home day and we didn’t get back in!). They fished it out and shocked the pool.
Happened to us in the States, we'd driven for eight hours through the mountains with the thought of cool water keeping us going. When we were told of the problem at check-in I was so clearly devastated they rang another hotel to allow us in there to swim, a much bigger pool too!

Why do they need to close for so long? I thought that was what the chemical are for?

Harsh judging parents. I used swim nappies for my DC but they don't contain everything.

I'm actually pool plant qualified & worked in many different pools over the years. This is very common, a lot more than people realise. If someone poops in the pool you actually don't have to close the pool at all, just scoop it out & that's all. We only shut for the pool for the public's sake so it looks like we're doing something. The only time we'd have the shut temporarily is if it's liquid like sick or diarrhoea. We have to run a few pool cycles with the choline levels higher than normal then we could open again. I don't want to put anyone off going swimming but no amount of money or even a death threat would get me in a public swimming pool ever again. You don't realise just what's in that water, trust me I've seen it all. Bodily fluids, solid contaminants & the chemical levels are so bad for you. & if you think you can have a piss in the pool & no one realises? Yes we do know 👀

I have suspected this for some time, hence I will not go swimming in a pool. Smile

I once emailed our local leisure centre to ask how they managed the pool during winter months when norovirus in the area was at a high, and I got a very benign response which didn't really answer my question. I took that to mean "We don't/can't."

I bet there was a lot of eye-rolling at the office.

I can second this, I used to work in a leisure centre many years ago and they'd get us gym instructors to deal with the pool too after some quick in house training. Wow the chemical levels! Still in safe levels but way worse than I'd swim in after seeing that. They'd probably nuke a poo...

Swimming nappies on their own don't do a lot really. They just let the 'brown' slowly wash out into the pool, leaving you with small orange lumps of carrot left in the nappy.
Like panning for gold.

Hah! This happened to us one year at butlins in the toddler and young child pool

There was a floater but I didn’t see it. The guards got everyone one (there were 3 other pools and a lazy river to use instead). But it was only about 10 mins before you could go back in. They didn’t empty it or anything, just scooped out the solids and maybe put more chlorine in, I don’t know.

Ds liked that pool because it had slides in that he could use…so we went back in. Everyone did really

My DP used to work in the maintenance team at a large city pool. Anything ‘loose’ n the pool, vomit, sloppy poo and they were required to close the pool for 12 hours. Said it would require several cycles through the filters to remove everything, Back washing, possibly shock dosing with chemicals. All to do with cryptosporidium and other nasties.

Just back from cruise. Saw one kid have a nosebleed and another one be sick in the pool. Pool closed both times so can’t always be predicted at all!

I had a lifeguard terrified that I'd go into labour in the pool and get it shut down every time he saw my maternity tankini slowly emergjng from the changing rooms. It was very hard to convince him that I just had a huge bump and 3 months to go Grin

I remain deeply relieved that we made it through the food allergy years without DS testing his swim nappies to destruction. It was a small act of mercy to all. Others had triggered evacuations of the pool a few times over the years of baby/ toddler classes.
