Actors who sound odd using their native accents

Watching supernatural and James Marsters is in an episode. He is speaking with his native American accent and it just sounds so odd. He just sounds better with the British accent instead

Another one is Margot Robbie who is actually Australian. She pulls off the American accent so well as Harley Quinn, that I just couldn’t process hearing her speak with the Australian accent Grin

I didn't know for years that Idris Elba was English. I only knew him as Stringer Bell.

TheAwfuITruth · 19/07/2021 10:27

I'm always quite amused by the thought of really posh, RADA trained thesps pulling on the earrings in the dressing room and 'becoming' Pat Butcher, or Audrey Roberts etc

Suppose it's a bit like Julie Walters in the Acorn Antiques thing, playing down at heel brummy Mrs Overall whilst actually been v glam and upper class Grin

@cariadlet

I was taken aback the first time I heard David Tennant speak a Scottish accent but I really like it. It's a shame he didn't use his own accent for Dr Who. The same goes for Martin Compston (Line of Duty).
I came here to say both of these!
dreamingbohemian · 19/07/2021 10:45

Yes why can't Dr Who be Scottish? His natural accent is lovely

FakeColinCaterpillar · 19/07/2021 10:47

I can’t think of an American who has fooled me into thinking they are British. Renee did the best job but I knew who she was.
I always thought Gwyneth was awful, they all go far far too posh

He was? Did you not notice Peter Capaldi?
PlumpCushion · 19/07/2021 11:04

I was very shocked to hear the actor who plays Line of Duty’s Steve Arnott speak in a lovely Scottish accent!

dreamingbohemian · 19/07/2021 11:12

Oh good point @claralara42, I haven't seen his series yet Blush

There's a great clip of him filming the last series when Scotland won a football match on penalties and he went straight from Steve Arnott to hyper excited Scotland football fan (he was listening to the match between takes in the car...)
LadyCatStark · 19/07/2021 14:15

Martin Compton has to be the main one!
Loads of Game of Thrones actors: Peter Dinklage, Jack Gleason, Richard Madden, Iwan Rheon, Conleth Hill to name a few…

Tinselandlights · 19/07/2021 14:17

I have absolutely no idea how Matthias Schoenaerts nails all his accents - you would never think he wasn't English in Far From the Madding Crowd, then he is Belgian in De Rouille et d'Os (French film with Marion Cotillard), he also acts speaking Dutch too. He's amazing!

I also had a shock when I heard Martin Compston with his real accent!

elenacampana · 19/07/2021 14:19

Damian Lewis and David Harewood. Martin Compston is probably the one that gets me the most though!

MadameRanevskaya · 19/07/2021 14:39

Michael Sheen

Anordinarymum · 19/07/2021 14:53

Why if you were born and bred in Yorkshire would you use a faux accent?

I'm talking about Alan Titchmarsh of course. He pretends to be from Yorkshire when it suits and then says stupid things like 'rum' when the correct pronunciation is 'room'
You can't go from one accent to another like that.. it is sooo fake Alan.

ItPearl · 19/07/2021 14:57

@elp30

I'm American, btw.
Ah that's interesting. Myself and my daughter were watching grey's anatomy and WE think (being Irish and not having ever lived in America) that Camilla Luddington (jo wilson) and Kevin McKidd (owen hunt) do very very good American accents. It must be especially challenging for a scottish native to do an american accent!
MoonlightWanderer · 19/07/2021 15:40

Ok, I think I'm going to have to do a Lennie James watchathon this summer holidays!

I think a few celebs put on accents for interviews. Kate Beckinsale has lived in LA for years but still has a perfect British accent.

BeQuietBrenda · 19/07/2021 18:45

I was listening to Chris and Rosie Ramsey podcast Shagged, Married, Annoyed a few days ago and they've both got lovely North East accents (I want to say Geordie but that's probably wrong, around that way though).

They were talking about a plasterer. However they were pronouncing the 'a' softly "ah" and it sounded so wrong that I couldn't carry on listening (and I live for that podcast, they're hilarious). So "Plahsterer" instead of the flat 'a'.

They've clearly had some nob advise them to clear up their pronunciation and it winds me up, there's nothing wrong with their accents and we need proper accents in the media instead of if being awash with RP or wannabe RP (Donna Air, Gerri Halliwell, James "I'm from Yorkshire" Martin and as you say, Alan Titchmarsh)

(there's nowt wrong with a soft 'ah', if that's your natural accent - my issue is when it doesn't sit naturally with your accent)

Housewife2010 · 19/07/2021 19:10

@BeQuietBrenda

Have you ever heard how Sue Nicholls aka Audrey Roberts speaks IRL? She sounds like she is trying really hard to be posh, but it is her actual accent!
Her full name ( pre marriage) was The Honourable Susan Farmar-Nicholls.
whistlers · 19/07/2021 19:15
@kurtney the Cockney one isn't his real one. I don't know which is but it's not that one! He was born in Wales but moved around a lot. Something tells me they settled in Bournemouth? I know Portugal and Oxfordshire are in the mix too. Not sure why I know so much about his early years 🤔
I do too! Wiki hole one afternoon.

Plus he's HOT

neroforte · 19/07/2021 19:18

katherine langford

Daisyhoney · 19/07/2021 19:34

As a big fan of Aug Wiedersehen Pet, it came as a big shock to discover that Barry ( Timothy Spall ) wasn't a Brummie and Moxey ( Chris Fairbank ) wasn't a Scouser

SirenSays · 19/07/2021 19:48

Charlie Hunnam! I was so shocked to hear his natural accent, it sounds like a weird mash up of English and American. I think he's lived in LA for a while but he's originally from Newcastle. I much prefer his American, Sons of Anarchy accent 😍

RightOnTheEdge · 19/07/2021 20:06

Lots of the ones already mentioned and another one who really shocked me was Colin Morgan who played Merlin!
I was astonished when I heard him talk in his real Northern Irish accent Shock
So talented! I would never have guessed it.

Chunkymenrock · 19/07/2021 20:14

Conleth Hill!

IAmTheLemonInPlay · 19/07/2021 20:27

Jennifer Ehle.

She's the definitive Elizabeth Bennet, so it was a shock to hear her

She talks about it in this interview.
