Actors who sound odd using their native accents

Watching supernatural and James Marsters is in an episode. He is speaking with his native American accent and it just sounds so odd. He just sounds better with the British accent instead

Another one is Margot Robbie who is actually Australian. She pulls off the American accent so well as Harley Quinn, that I just couldn’t process hearing her speak with the Australian accent Grin

@BruceAndNosh

Having first seen him as "English" in Shameless, i can't get used to James McEvoy speaking with quite a strong Scottish accent
Yup I only joined this thread to say the same!!
Mrsfrumble · 18/07/2021 21:41

I was 3 seasons in to American Gods when I found out Ricky Whittle (Shadow Moon) was from Oldham. I haven’t heard his native accent but I’d love to.

Shefliesonherownwings · 18/07/2021 21:41

@Shapesorted you need to watch Luther. Ruth Wilson from The Affair is in that and she is brilliant in it.

BeQuietBrenda · 18/07/2021 21:41

Have you ever heard how Sue Nicholls aka Audrey Roberts speaks IRL? She sounds like she is trying really hard to be posh, but it is her actual accent!

greatestdancer · 18/07/2021 21:42

Christian Bale

LemonDrizzles · 18/07/2021 21:42

Jodie what's it from killing Eve. Every time

LetItBe80 · 18/07/2021 21:42

Cillian Murphy. After Peaky Blinders I still expect to hear a broad Birmingham accent.

PiccalilliChilli · 18/07/2021 21:43

Richard Madden is Scottish: I'd only known him with a Northern accent on Game of Thrones so to hear him speak with a Scots burr was a revelation!

Same with Rose Leslie. Saw her in Downton and GoT and later found out she speaks with an English accent, thoughI think her parents are Scottish aristocracy.

Mommybunny · 18/07/2021 21:47

Another brilliant accent shifter is Stephen Graham. He played an Italian American Union boss from New Jersey in The Irishman and his New Jersey accent was spot on (I’m a New Jersey native). I’d had no idea he was from Liverpool!

iklboo · 18/07/2021 21:54

Apparently as Villanelle, Jodie Comer speaks French like a native Russian who has learned French would pronounce words! That's doubly astonishing.

iklboo · 18/07/2021 21:56

And Fiona Shaw who plays Carolyn in Killing Eve is Irish.

GhostTypeEevee · 18/07/2021 22:01

I got a real shock when I heard an interview with Caitriona Balfe I had no idea she is Irish

Shirleyphallus · 18/07/2021 22:02

Oh and Pam from Gavin and Stacey, who is actually really posh in real life

“It’s all the drama Mick, I just love it!”

@cariadlet

I wonder what any Americans who only know Hugh Laurie from House would make of an old episode of Jeeves and Wooster or a Bit of Fry and Laurie.
I remember reading about Hugh Laurie receiving an award for House and the host said: "Are we doing accents?", and Laurie saying: "This is my accent".
ElephantCup · 18/07/2021 22:17

Colin o’donoghue, who plays the delightful hook in once upon a time.

MiddleParking · 18/07/2021 22:17

@LetItBe80

Cillian Murphy. After Peaky Blinders I still expect to hear a broad Birmingham accent.
Christ, I’ve never heard him get to anything approaching a decent Birmingham accent in all 5 series. The only one in it I thought was worse was (Irish) Brian Gleeson’s Scottish accent in the last series. His brother Domhnall on the other hand does a fantastic RP accent in About Time and Star Wars.
CrazyBaubles · 18/07/2021 22:18

I watched Kevin McKidd play an american doctor / ex soldier in Greys Anatomy for a few years before I realised he's actually Scottish and was in Trainspotting.

Strangely, I prefer High Laurie's real accent but Damien Lewis sounding English doesn't feel right.

Jodie Comer is amazing all around but her accents are something else.

I can't think of any examples of a convincing Irish or welsh accent though.

Bit random but Jesse Spencer accent makes me laugh. I know him first from Neighbours so expect him to be Australian. Then in house he has an acceptable Australian / American mixed up twang. Now he's in Chicago Fire with a supposed born and bred Chicago accent but it isn't right, and there was an episode not too long ago where he was playing a game and had to do an Australian accent, which he did so badly it was shocking - which is quite a feat really 😂

Annietheacrobat · 18/07/2021 22:23

Fay Ripley - posh southern accent in real.life (compared to Jenny in Cold Feet)

PurpleFlower1983 · 18/07/2021 22:30

Gillian Anderson literally switches between English and American depending on where/who she is with.

John Barrowman speaks with a Scottish accent when talking to his parents.

JoborPlay · 18/07/2021 22:32

Johnathan Rhys Meyers is Welsh, though it's very soft. He tends to do RP/ non-descript in most things but when he does the hushed threatening whispers in the Tudors, and when he yells "go back to your wolves" in velvet goldmine the Welsh comes out.

Googlewasmyidea1 · 18/07/2021 22:42

@CallMeRisley

I had no idea Lennie James was British!

@FoxVillage You must watch Line of Duty Grin

He was in an early episode of cold Feet too, Rachel's husband
Stopsnowing · 18/07/2021 22:42

Jodie Comer is outstanding.
I think Rose Byrne is Australian but does English and American accents very well.
Years ago I saw Forrest Whittaker in the Crying Game and for quite a while afterwards kept thinking how well that young British actor was doing over in Hollywood.

Jobseeker19 · 18/07/2021 22:45

Captain Hook in Once Upon a Time!

EnjoyingTheSilence · 18/07/2021 22:46

@LemonViolet

Ah y’see Andrew Lincoln I found the other way around, more like “why is Egg from This Life pretending to be American?” Grin
He’ll always be Egg. No matter what he does, he’s Egg!
JaneJeffer · 18/07/2021 22:46

Johnathan Rhys Meyers is Welsh,
He's Irish.
