Actors who sound odd using their native accents

Watching supernatural and James Marsters is in an episode. He is speaking with his native American accent and it just sounds so odd. He just sounds better with the British accent instead

Another one is Margot Robbie who is actually Australian. She pulls off the American accent so well as Harley Quinn, that I just couldn’t process hearing her speak with the Australian accent Grin

@JaneJeffer

Johnathan Rhys Meyers is Welsh, He's Irish.
That's what I meant! D'oh. In my defense it's been a very long day!
Googlewasmyidea1 · 18/07/2021 22:49

Noooooooo, he'll always be Simon Casey

MiddleParking · 18/07/2021 22:49

I always see Andrew Lincoln as the weird guy from Love Actually. In which his English accent is actually quite bad but not very American sounding - I’d guess the actor was Eastern European or something trying to do an English accent if I heard a clip of it.

@Rockhoppperd

Matthew Rhys from The Americans and Brothers and Sisters. His native Welsh accent fascinates me
Matthew Rhys is Welsh!!

I just rewatched Brother's and Sisters and never knew this. Just watched him being interviewed on YouTube and my mind is blown, that is one strong accent!

Gillian Anderson literally switches between English and American depending on where/who she is with.

She spent quite a long time in the UK growing up. She learned to speak with an English accent over here. I think once she's with English actors she slips into it.

Rafe Spall has a proper London accent. I thought he was posh for some reason - no idea why.
@Shapesorted you need to watch Luther. Ruth Wilson from The Affair is in that and she is brilliant in it.
Thanks will have a look.

Daniel Brocklebank who plays Billy in Coronation Street (and was also in Shakespeare in Love) speaks with a very very posh accent. It sounds strange after hearing his Northern accent in Corrie!

TheatricalGiraffe · 19/07/2021 07:04

The first time I heard Renee Zellweger talk in her Texan accent it really threw me. I was so used to her British accent from Bridget Jones

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 19/07/2021 08:00

The first time I saw Gwyneth Paltro was in Sliding doors followed by Shakespeare in love, so her Americaness always confuses me!

GuyFawkesDay · 19/07/2021 08:02

Shaun Evans as Morse....he's Scouse too. And switches in and out on set in an instant. Mark of talent. When I rewatched Teachers on netflix he's on there looking about 17 with his natural accent.

GrandPrismatic · 19/07/2021 08:12

One more to add the love for Jodie Comer…she is truly phenomenal…her accents are perfection.

kurtney · 19/07/2021 08:13

@greatestdancer

Christian Bale
Christian Bale sounds like he's imitating Phil Mitchell in interviews. I keep expecting him to shout 'GET OUT MY PUB' and I absolutely refuse to believe he isn't putting on a faux cockney accent to gain some sort of weird street cred.
MooChops89 · 19/07/2021 08:59

I'm watching The Handmaid's Tale at the min and I saw a promo thing for it the other day - Nick and Luke are both British in real life and I didn't expect it

DaniellaDavis · 19/07/2021 09:18

Christian Bale, I was surprised when I found out he was British

Chunkymenrock · 19/07/2021 09:24

Pat from East Enders of old. Very well spoken in real life.
Phillip Glenister. Fab as Gene Hunt but a shock to hear his real life London accent!

HunterHearstHelmsley · 19/07/2021 09:31

@Mrsfrumble

I was 3 seasons in to American Gods when I found out Ricky Whittle (Shadow Moon) was from Oldham. I haven’t heard his native accent but I’d love to.
I think he used it in Dream Team. Its been a few years so I may be chatting bubbles.

Mine is Christian Bale.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 19/07/2021 09:34

@kurtney the Cockney one isn't his real one. I don't know which is but it's not that one! He was born in Wales but moved around a lot. Something tells me they settled in Bournemouth? I know Portugal and Oxfordshire are in the mix too. Not sure why I know so much about his early years 🤔

dreamingbohemian · 19/07/2021 09:49

Idris Elba! No one in the US could believe he was British. He does a great accent in the Wire (though it's sometimes more New York than Baltimore from what I've seen)

I actually cannot watch House because Hugh Laurie's voice sounds so unnatural. It's not a bad accent per se but it's just.... not right somehow.

Bromeliad · 19/07/2021 09:51

Wasn't Ricky Whittle in Hollyoaks? I agree though, it took me ages to place him from American Gods because of his accent. I did not expect to remember him from Hollyoaks.

JassyRadlett · 19/07/2021 10:00

Lennie James, I first saw him in Jericho with an American accent.

Ha, yes, I spent all of the first season of Line of Duty (only watched it this year) being mildly weirded out because he wasn’t talking like he came from Georgia like his accent in The Walking Dead.

Although I’ve realised that I’ve no idea what a Georgian accent actually sounds like as my main reference points are Andrew Lincoln and Lennie James….

sashh · 19/07/2021 10:05

Has anyone mentioned Jacob Anderson AKA Greyworm from GOT yet?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 19/07/2021 10:08

Stephen Hawking was English.

TheAwfuITruth · 19/07/2021 10:12

John Barrowman speaks with a Scottish accent when talking to his parents

Or to Lorraine Kelly Hmm

Mina is Laura Fraser. I know she's done lots of stuff in her native accent, but I first saw her as Lydia in Breaking Bad. Now, whenever I see her in anything, for a few seconds I'm like, why is she scottish? Confused

Yuckyfinger · 19/07/2021 10:17

I've heard Pam StClements (pat butcher in eastenders) in interviews and she sounds quite posh in RL.

Ozanj · 19/07/2021 10:22

Ye she is really posh (met her through family).
