I need some advice please. I'm a woman & I've been wanting to buzz cut my hair ever since lockdown started & I'm really tempted to do it.
I'm just worried I won't suit it & I'll look like a complete prat & my 2 year old won't recognise me. He's only ever seen me wirh should length hair.
Should I do it?

I ask as it's often best for people to go for a pixie first to get used to the look of shorter hair and see how they feel about it, but dependent on your hair type a pixie can be really tough to style day to day so end up being way more of a faff than longer hair!

Hen2018 · 14/06/2021 21:46

My hair has been like that for 16 years!

Itsabingthing2 · 14/06/2021 21:48

@youvegottenminuteslynn I've had a pixie cut before. Not as short as Natalie Portman! That's way too short!

I always think you need to have very feminine features to get away with a very masculine barber-style haircut. Any hint of a prominent brow, narrow eyes, a square jaw, short neck or a double chin and you would look like a bloke.

You don’t necessarily need to wear makeup etc to look good with a buzz cut. I had one for years, never wore makeup, mostly wear jeans, & I’m not photogenic & don’t have classically good bone structure. But, everyone said I suited it. If it doesn’t suit you, or you don’t like it, hair tends to grow faster in summer & it’s easier to cover up in winter.

Alternista · 14/06/2021 21:52

I think if you’re actually wanting a pixie cut you shouldn’t take the clippers to your own head 😂

ShowerOfShite · 14/06/2021 21:54

Do it!!
I had #4 to a #8 for years, loved it.
I'd love to do it again but I've piled on the weight and I'm not sure if I can pull it off.

Kittykat93 · 14/06/2021 21:54

Do it !!! Especially after the comment from your husband.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 14/06/2021 21:54

I look like a spud with hair.

I’m guessing I would just look like a spud without hair Grin

@uhtredsonofuhtred1

I don't think I'd ever do it myself but when I see women with a buzz cut I think they look awesome! It often makes their faces look even more feminine like their bone structure is more defined.
Yep, I love a buzz cut on women. It can look super feminine, or butch as heck, depending on how you style the rest of your look. ( and I adore both looks tbh)

Im female and I did mine on a no 3 in lockdown from a grown out Bob. What I did notice (thanks to spending half my life bored shitless in zoom meetings and pondering my own image on the thumbnail ) was that my cheekbones looked really defined with short hair, despite the Bob supposedly cut to flatter my face shape.

Do it do it do it

Wear a hat and grow it out if you hate it.

Hax · 14/06/2021 21:58

I did it at the start of lockdown 1. Loved it.

Itsabingthing2 · 14/06/2021 22:08

My hubby keeps saying he can't be seen with me if I do it & I'll look like a dick, it's really knocked my confidence not to do it. Again I'm confused by the numbers.

I'm worried I'll hate it! He buzzed his hair in first lockdown really short. I even helped him.

I don't want a pixie cut, I've had one before.

Have you got different clipper guards? Do it on the highest one first e.g number 8 and then you can go shorter from there

Maggiesgirl · 14/06/2021 22:17

I have buzzed mine 4 or 5 times over the years. The last time when I was in my mid 50's. As long as you have chhek bones it will look great.

Sod the husband, its your hair, and it grows again.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 14/06/2021 22:19

You must be able to find some pictures of styles you like by googling various word combos? You can include the numbers (4 or 8 etc) to help? That would be a good place to start and then you can have more of a think about which you'd like to maybe try, if any.

Muddydoor · 14/06/2021 22:23

Last time I had my hair shaved off, I took my toddler with me do she saw it happening and understood I’m still me.

I have a terrible face for it though and have to wear lots of make-up. I have finally grown out of doing it and am now seeing how long I can grow my hair.

DramaAlpaca · 14/06/2021 22:23

I think it depends on your head shape and your features whether it'll look good. I've two friends who've gone for the buzz cut during lock down. One looks utterly fabulous, the other not so much. I'd never tell her of course, but she has prominent ears and it just doesn't suit her. If I were you I'd ask the opinion of a couple of friends you really trust.

Beamur · 14/06/2021 22:24

The numbers are the length they cut the hair to in millimetres.

Maggiesgirl · 14/06/2021 22:24

This is the last time I did it

@Beamur

The numbers are the length they cut the hair to in millimetres.
No they’re not.

No 4 is (depending on the make of clippers) around 13mm. No 2 is around 6mm.

I went from boob length hair last year to a pixie cut with shaved back and sides.

I love it. So much easier to wash and go now.

Champagneforeveryone · 14/06/2021 22:31

DS did mine in lockdown, though in respect of DH's very strong feelings I did stop at a grade 5.

It was fine and in hindsight not much shorter than a particularly brutal normal cut for me. The only thing I would say is that it's taken many months for my lovely hairdresser (who was silently horrified) to get it back to its former glory as we had buzzed all the layers out.

ThatOtherPoster · 14/06/2021 22:34

I’d have said no… except there was a TikTok trend of shaving your head and EVERYONE looked gorgeous afterwards. Everyone. I was so shocked. I watched the first couple of videos expecting to see Phil Mitchells emerging, but it was unanimously Sinead O’Connors.

These were all girls in their teens and 20s, of course.

Do it. Just don’t wear dangly earrings afterwards or you’ll look like a drama teacher.
