Not including family.

I have two. I feel that's low. Have other friends but not close close.

This thread is indeed sad. I love my close friends and have never been let down by them. We keep in touch on what's app because we're geographically distant. But every time we meet up we pick up exactly where we were before and talk for hours, never ever short of things to say. My life would have been so much poorer without them. They're friendships that have endured for decades and I can't imagine that changing. I'm hoping I'll be an old lady one day trundling off on the train for a trip to visit them.

LeanneBrownsLonelyBraincell · 29/05/2021 18:39

8, collected over the years from infants school to work.

I don't have siblings do I feel very lucky to have so many friends.

Serpenta · 29/05/2021 18:39

I think friendship is really underrated in comparison to romantic love when platonic love is likely to outlive most romantic relationships.

Sing about that, Celine!

@BreakingtheIce

This thread is really sad.
Isn't that a bit patronising
BreakingtheIce · 29/05/2021 19:10

No I meant it is sad that so many people have been let down by people they trusted. That’s what I meant.

HarrisMcCoo · 29/05/2021 19:11

What's sad about it exactly?? whosappleman

🤔

RosaBaby2 · 29/05/2021 19:13

I have 3 and my sister in our 'close friends' group and I don't have any other friends apart from at work.

Onceuponatime1818 · 29/05/2021 19:13

Close as in would tell them my biggest secrets and would call them in a proper emergency: 4

Have been lucky as have known them since primary school

HarrisMcCoo · 29/05/2021 19:15

@Hoppipolla479

Sadly I have none. I didn’t realise that until a big life change hit. It’s been a very difficult to handle revelation
I noticed that too when the shit hit the fan, not a soul comes near. You soon find out who your friends are in life.
HarrisMcCoo · 29/05/2021 19:17

I prefer to spend my free time with my dog. She is fantastic and I don't need to put up with anyone letting me down. She is reliable and good company. Woman's best friend 😂🐶

I’m lucky I have 6 very close friends that I’ve been friends with a long time and I know I could rely on them for anything. Not all in the same place, same group and not all in with every day. I do have friendships with a few others but not in the same way.

I’ve always been lucky to have good close friendships that have lasted through all kinds. I’d give that small number over having lots any day.

teenagetantrums · 29/05/2021 19:37

I would say 4....but since l moved away we are drifting apart. All at different life stages however l know could still call them in the middle of the night if l needed help.
Where l live now l have made l close friend through work..we talk everyday when not at work and socialise together..
To be honest that's enough for me I'm not good in big groups and like to stay at home most of the time
My partner makes friends at the drop off a hat and is out now having fun in the pub. As long as I'm not expected to go I'm happy with that .

SellOurHouse · 29/05/2021 19:42

Also 2! Best decision I ever made was cutting contact with people I found exhausting fo be around. There were no hard feelings just kinds cut loose.

lljkk · 29/05/2021 20:35

Define "close".... 0 is my guess

I chat, I try to be amusing. I edit heavily. I tell no one lots of deep truths.

I'm so used to this I can't imagine having a BFF now.

MN has made me paranoid that everyone is extremely intolerant of everyone else. I don't need anyone enough to pander to all their hangups and prejudices.

DipSwimSwoosh · 29/05/2021 21:00

Lots I think, but not many geographically close.
3 local 'mum friends' who I could call in a fix (which seems to be the criteria).
3 local hobby friends I check in with most days and see often.
3 school friends but I moved away and don't see them often
2 travelling friends I make a point of seeing a few times a year and love to bits
A best friend on the other side of the world I would do almost anything for
A best friend from uni but she lives abroad
A few friends here and there I have picked up along the way, houseshares, work etc. Only a few have remained close. We don't live near but check in often and get together when we can - maybe 5ish.
So I think about 18 or 20.

You know you see those groups where they do loads together and have lots of fun. Lots of people to invite to parties etc
CMOTDibbler · 29/05/2021 21:31

None. I only have DH as no family either. I wish I did, but I'm apparently not very good at it

TaraR2020 · 29/05/2021 21:36

I don't think threads like these are very helpful Hmm

HarrisMcCoo · 29/05/2021 21:40

whosappleman I suppose it depends if that would make you happy. I am not a fan of speaking to lots of people at once. Not sure it's the reality for many people.

weegiemum · 29/05/2021 21:49

3 of mine that I could call anytime and they'd be here as soon as they could.
Also 1 of dh's friends is a good friend of mine, he'd do anything for our family.

I agree. Makes those of us who have 0 close friends feel even worse reading about those who have over 10 close friends.
