How many steps do you walk a day?

I’ve recently began tracking mine and I’m wondering if I’m the norm or if I’m a lazy sod or an active one… so if you track your steps, how many?

Working from home I sometimes don't leave the house for a few days - so about 1300. Supermarket days that goes up to 3000. If I get out for a walk 5-10000. If I'm honest that's once maybe twice a week. I used to hit 10k most days pre pandemic. It's a real problem for me - I'm in my early 50s and can feel the lack of activity in my bones. It's the only thing could tempt me back into the office.

Pinchoftums · 25/05/2021 08:38

On a lazy day about 9000, on a normal day about 16000, on a weekend about 23000. Weekly average is about 17000.

CarpeVitam · 25/05/2021 08:39

Weekdays? Usually 10-12000.

Weekend? Not a lot! Wink

About 30,000. Some time ago I decided walking would be my main mode of transport, so if I can walk somewhere I always will. I do about 15 miles each day.

wobblyweasel · 25/05/2021 08:53

On an average day about 12000
On a good day about 15000
On a brilliant day 20000 +
I have a very active border collie who keeps me on the go. I have rheumatoid arthritis and rather than give in I try and push myself.

lastqueenofscotland · 25/05/2021 08:58

My average is 20k
Keen runner and run every day which bumps it up.
WHF at the moment and trying to get for a good walk before work and at lunch too then a run in the evenings

samthebordercollie · 25/05/2021 09:14

Around 27000
I run every morning, have an active job and dog walk in the evening.

Dustyhedge · 25/05/2021 09:21

When I was commuting it was around 12k and could hit 20k if I was walking to external meetings. At home I’ve found that I can be below 2k which does help to explain why I’ve put on weight. I need to make more of an effort to walk to school as that would be about 3.5k steps there abs back. It’s a bit too easy to use the car though when the weather has been bleak.

ButtercupSquash · 25/05/2021 09:23

About 8k a day according to my phone last year. It gets more difficult as the nights draw in. A day of gardening and housework only yields about 4K.

emmathedilemma · 25/05/2021 09:38

@RedRiverShore I was doing a step challenge a few years ago with work and had a long drive one evening so took my watch off and put it on the passenger seat to try and avoid "cheating" if it tracked arm movements while driving and when I arrived it had done 2500 steps!! I think my garmin is more accurate, if anything it undercounts as I got up and went to the loo this morning, went back to bed for an hour and when I got up properly it still said 0 steps so i clearly flew to the bathroom!

WhatHaveIFound · 25/05/2021 09:40

Normally 9-12 thousand steps a day. On a busy day I can do 15-17 but it depends on work. DH and I go for a walk most days regardless of weather.

PleaseStopExplaining · 25/05/2021 09:59

On a good day, about 50. Total. I’m a wheelchair user for about 95% of the time.

OP, I wouldn’t stress about how many steps you do, just make sure you’re being active somehow.

lucyslocketinherpocket · 25/05/2021 13:45

15000 - 20000 steps per day.

I am a stay at home mum with young children, one a toddler at home. I rarely sit down Grin

Varforinte · 26/05/2021 16:00

I think that it would be more accurate if people said if they were using a phone or fit bit. Also what job they do.

My husband takes the dog for half an hour walk in the morning, cycles to work (not tracked), is on his feet for up to 10 hours as a chef, then takes the dog for another walk (up to an hour). He is on his feet for well over 12 hours a day with constant movement. With his phone as the pedometer, he has got just over 20 k steps a day occasionally.

If it takes about an hour of pretty brisk walking to get 7000 steps that is 3-4 hours of fast walking to get 20-24 k. Or, say 5000 k from an active job, then get home and do another 2-3 hours walking on top. Do people really have the energy to do that? I only force myself out because of a bonkers dog.

PurpleFadesToGreen · 26/05/2021 17:00

My phone currently says 2000 steps.

But I've been to work and we're not allowed fitbits or phones etc on us, so no clue on a working day, I'd like to know mind you.

I wear a Garmin Fenix watch that has a reliable step counter as well as GPS for my running. That's why I added the context for my numbers, the daily average from my watch doesn't tell the whole story because my running bumps it up!
AdultHumanWhale · 27/05/2021 12:18

I average about 30000 steps a day, according to my Garmin watch.
More if I go for a walk/run in the evening, but I've been quite lazy about that recently.

I'm a postie though, so my work hours are spent walking.

Nicpem1982 · 27/05/2021 12:41

I average 13000 a day, at weekends or days off about 18-20,000.

I do 5 exercise classes a week and walk to and from the gym to boost my steps.

I have a desk job so have to be conscious to ensure I get out

Mama1980 · 27/05/2021 13:31

About 15,000 a day on average.
