How many steps do you walk a day?

I’ve recently began tracking mine and I’m wondering if I’m the norm or if I’m a lazy sod or an active one… so if you track your steps, how many?

I am a bit walking obsessed and we live half an hour walk from the school so I usually average about 15k a day but some days it can be over 20k.

DoreenWinkings · 24/05/2021 23:11

Between 12 and 20k. I have a desk job but I run between 2 and 4 times a week. And walk - or go to an exercise class when the gym is open, on the others.

@Pinetreesfall

Whaaat?! How do you all do so many steps? I feel bad if I get below 5k per day but I am at work...when do you all do all this walking if you're working?!
I work in care....... I've done nearly 3000 since I started at 9pm, quietened down now though (for a bit, shouldn't say that it'll go mad now 😂)

Now. 200 maybe.

3 miles round trip walking to work and back. I have no idea how many steps that is....... I do know it feels a lot further when it's raining and windy. 🤔

subbysammiexoxo · 25/05/2021 03:54

about 10k a day atm but can be as many as 20k and as little as 5k

I sometimes do a school run before work (2 miles) but little other exercise on work days. On my days off I do 4 miles of school runs, then shopping (on foot) and often go for a long walk too. A brisk 5k/3 miles takes under 45 minutes and I tend to do at least 10k on a decent walk.
ivykaty44 · 25/05/2021 06:23

average 3.77 miles per day, but I was walking a lit through jan feb and as the weathers improved I’ve swapped to cycling

I can't figure how you're all doing so many steps a day. I climbed a 2000ft peak on Saturday and my iphone tracked the daily step count at only 15,569.

20viona · 25/05/2021 06:32

About 10k

Stronghold · 25/05/2021 06:35

Thanks to a group we formed on mumsnet/fitbit, I've gone from about 8k to 20k average. Anyone looking for a bit of motivation is very welcome to join us - link to current thread here. Smile

Between 15-20k a day.
Every other morning I go for a run before work, walk to work and in my lunch break and then walk home. On the days I don’t go for a run I try and go for a walk in the evening with any of the dc or a friend and their dog.
My back plays up a lot less the more I move - it’s a great motivator for me.

MisgenderedSwan · 25/05/2021 06:39

I do about 16k on average. School run for 2 dc 2km apart morning and afternoon. Work in a hospital so have to park in staff parking 2km away from the building. Dog needs a walk in an evening. Dc have activities, if they're in the village then we walk. Usually get 2k in the 4 hours I'm at work. If I haven't hit 15k by 7pm then I go on the treadmill for half an hour.

Charles11 · 25/05/2021 06:47

I average about 5k on a work day and 10-12k on non work days as I have time to go out for a walk.

AlternativePerspective · 25/05/2021 06:47

I average about 9k a day but it took a lot of perseverance to get there.

4.5 years ago I was diagnosed with a serious heart condition which meant I was unable to walk from my lounge to my kitchen without having to stop for breath. I never counted steps then but it was almost certainly below 1.5k.

I had some medical intervention to stabilise my health two years ago but then as things were getting back on track and I’d been through cardiac rehab the pandemic hit and I had to shield.

So I spent lockdown walking around my house. While listening to audio books, while on the phone, while just watching television, and built up my steps that way.

6.5/7k equals 5km so it’s worth bearing in mind that people who are doing 20k or so are covering around 15/16km a day which is certainly not average for most people.

So it’s important not to compare yourself unfairly with some of the figures on this thread.

RoseMartha · 25/05/2021 06:58

Roughly 80-85k a week

I have done as low as 68 a week and as high as 101 a week.

I find when I walk hills I do fewer steps - I think it’s longer strides. On really hilly walks I feel I get more exercise but step count is lower
Bagelsandbrie · 25/05/2021 07:00

Usually about 5-6k sometimes 8k but I really need to push myself to walk just for the sake of it to get that.

BalloonSlayer · 25/05/2021 07:36

Fitbits grossly exaggerate steps - just saying.

People with a sedentary job doing 10,000 a day . . . that's really unlikely unless they have a long walk to/from work or a long walk in the evening.

I wear a pedometer, have a sedentary job with a short walk to/from it. I usually only reach 2000 steps unless I make the effort to go for an extra walk when I get home.

A day pottering in the house will get me about 800 steps.

My sister has a fitbit and a pedometer. When she goes out for a walk they register the same but in an afternoon spent pottering round the house the pedometer will add a few hundred but the fitbit adds about five thousand.

Gladioli23 · 25/05/2021 08:10

If I want to get to 20k steps I would have to be walking 8 miles a day. Even when I was walking to work every day that was a pretty unusual day. I don't think this is a representative number of steps as a rule, especially given the proportion of the UK population classed as inactive. (25% of adults do less than 30mins activity a Week, and 60% less than 150 mins a week). A half hour walk of 1.5 miles would only be about 4k steps at most.

On a day when I don't leave the house I will do maybe 1000-2000 steps. Yesterday I went for a (not very long) walk and mowed the whole garden and still did under 5k steps.

stiieeph · 25/05/2021 08:14

Over 40,000 a day 😣 on the go from 5am till 10pm though when I finally sit down

AprilShowerThoughts · 25/05/2021 08:20

I work from home, walk around neighbourhood and do a half hour session on cross trainer every day and I'm nowhere near 5k steps. I similarly to earlier poster have done a days hiking and that was around 20,000 steps and have no idea how you'd slot that many, even half that many steps into a normal day unless you had a job on your feet and a commute and/or bags of spare time to go for walks or runs.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 25/05/2021 08:21

Confusing as some ppl are noting steps and some distance-

I usually do over 20,000+ steps or between 15-20k on average a day

I walk my dog for a couple of hours in the morning and then again in the evening. Walk everywhere-very very rarely drive car anymore at all.

Actually once we were driving down a bumpy road and my Apple Watch seemed to be adding steps 😀

My average is 13k per day but that doesn't tell the whole story. I have a dog so do about 5k every day dog walking but I also have a desk job currently wfh. What brings my average up is my running, I run 3 times a week which brings my step count right up! I know it's all steps and it all counts but I don't walk 13k every day
