How many steps do you walk a day?

I’ve recently began tracking mine and I’m wondering if I’m the norm or if I’m a lazy sod or an active one… so if you track your steps, how many?

Desk job, drive to work or work from home so less than 3000 if I don’t do any exercise or go for a walk.
I try to do 10k most days but don’t worry if I don’t but have done other stuff that doesn’t count steps eg swimming or spin. At weekends I can easily hit 20k so I tend to average about 10k a day over the week.

BackforGood · 24/05/2021 21:06

This gets asked every now and then on here, and you get SUCH a skewed picture, it is unreal.

Some days I do about 369 steps..
Other days I deliberately go out for an hour's walk and manage to get it up to about 6000

Diggingaholeformyself · 24/05/2021 21:08

Average work day about 13-15k. On Saturday I was so exhausted I did less 1000 😂

I’ve reset my smart watch so it celebrates at 6000. Even achieving that means going for a walk and forcing myself to get up from my laptop and walk around a bit every hour. On a lazy day I do around 3000. I only do 10000 when I used to have to go to London for work.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 24/05/2021 21:12

I try and do at least 20k a day

UhtredRagnarson · 24/05/2021 21:14

It depends. If I’m working can be around 18000. If at home maybe around 8-10000.

ThursdayLastWeek · 24/05/2021 21:15

It varies because I do different things on different days.

What’s important is that you don’t measure your worth by how many steps you take in a day! Working really hard in something, but remaining sitting down isn’t lazy. Listening to your body and relaxing or resting g for a day isn’t lazy either.

DialsMavis · 24/05/2021 21:15

Mine have dropped since wfh and vary but I aim for 10 000 averaged over week, the last few weeks I got av 13000 for the week. Last week was 9000 as doing too much socialising and waiting for breaks in the rain to go for a jog and then not going

partyatthepalace · 24/05/2021 21:18

About 7k on a normal day unless I make a point of getting it higher, and then about 10-13 on a couple days a week because of appointments etc.

There’s no particular evidence fir 10k steps, and lots of alternative advice is to work up to walking briskly for 45 mins a day. If you want to track that instead there is an NHS app called perfect 10

L0bstersLass · 24/05/2021 21:24

About a thousand.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 24/05/2021 21:27

On work days (twice a week) very few, 1500-4000. On my days off normally 15000-25000.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 24/05/2021 21:32

13-18k, normal day.

WhenTheDragonsCame · 24/05/2021 21:33

I'm not allowed to wear a FitBit at work so have to track steps on my phone so not sure how reliable it is.

On a work day I tend to manage anywhere from 6,000 to 16,000 depending on if I walk or cycle to work and if I'm picking DD up from gym.

On a weekend it can register as low as 230 if I'm home all day as I don't carry my phone around with me and it's not very often I reach 10,000.

SkankingMopoke · 24/05/2021 21:36

Mon - Fri is usually between 10-15k due to work and school runs (the latter is approx 4k steps in total). I have an active job, but it varies as to whether it's 'walking about'-active or 'humping heavy stuff into position'-active, which makes a huge difference. Today I was working in a tiny cupboard about 3 steps wide so have only managed 8k.

Sat & Sun are usually 4-8k depending on how lazy we are feeling, or if I'm doing a job that involves a lot of standing in one spot eg potting up plants rather than cutting hedges/lawn. Occasionally we'll go for a long walk and I'll hit 15k for the day.

Over the week I generally average 70-80k. During the lockdowns/school closures it dropped to half that as a few long walks a week were nowhere near enough to balance out the lack of work & school runs and instead spending most of the day sat at a table attempting to teach phonics and maths.

I miss going raving and festivals the most for step counts though: 35k steps by the time you get home/back to your tent at 8am! then finishing the day on 35100 because you have only left the sofa for snacks and the toilet since getting home Grin

Pinetreesfall · 24/05/2021 21:38

Whaaat?! How do you all do so many steps? I feel bad if I get below 5k per day but I am at work...when do you all do all this walking if you're working?!

I’m a cleaner. I don’t sit down some days between 8 and 4:30.
UhtredRagnarson · 24/05/2021 21:41

Well, other than when I’m driving between clients of course! Grin

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 24/05/2021 21:43

Well I don't work but I like to do them when the youngest dcs in bed so 5 -6 in the morning then again 7-8 depending how many I've done in the day

RuthW · 24/05/2021 21:43

Around 5k. About 7k when I'm not working. I have a desk full time job.

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 24/05/2021 21:44

I aim for 15k which was my commuting total. A good day is about 23k, heavy rain it could be a great deal less.

Itsagrandoldteam · 24/05/2021 21:45

I try to do at least 10k a day, just looked at my phone and my fitbit app says I average between 12 and 14k a day. If we play golf it will be a lot more.

Sunshine1235 · 24/05/2021 21:47

I tend to do around 7k, will sometimes hit 10k if we go out but I have small children so although we go out more days we don’t go far. Sometimes if they’re happily playing in the park I’ll walk around it to try and get my steps up

Most of my walking is done in work and getting there. Grin It's about 1000 steps each way from the multistorey. There's also school drop off where I park a walk away so I don't get stuck in traffic on the actual school road. I average around 20,000 steps weekdays. Less on weekends.
OublietteBravo · 24/05/2021 21:58

For any meetings where I don’t need to be on camera I use my phone and trek round the neighbourhood. I can do about 7500 steps an hour.

Pinetreesfall · 24/05/2021 22:04

@BlueCarPinkShoes ahh yeh true if you're walking a lot at work. I also park away from nursery just to get extra steps in and often a brisk walk if I get a few mins away from the desk!
I spend a lot of time outside with work but not so much walking!
