Next door asking for WiFi password

Just want to start by saying I would do anything for anyone but I’m not quite sure we have done the right thing. Last night next door knocked on asking if they could have the WiFi password. I didn’t answer as I was upstairs, so DP did and he gave it her. Now, they aren’t my favourite people (putting that nicely) I put a thread a bit back saying how much of a nightmare they are. Not really sure why DP gave it her to be honest. I’m really paranoid now they have it. Does anyone know if they could do anything dodgy with it? I might be sounding dramatic but if so, could I change my WiFi password and would that kick them off it?

Porn? Online scams? Hacking your bank accounts? and who knows who else they might pass the details to, perhaps for a fee.

Frankly even with our nice neighbours I'd say sorry and no. I've got to use it for work as well as our tvs and pcs. Service can be massively slow for us without having others piggybacking.

Is this helpful OP?

How to change your Wi-Fi password
Using any internet browser on a Mac or PC, open your router's configuration page. ...
Log into your router using its username and password. ...
Once logged in, locate the "Wireless" or "Wireless Security" option. ...
In the "Wi-Fi Password" or "Key" box, enter the password you want your connection to have.

Dunnesstores · 09/05/2021 13:09

Turn off your wifi until you figure out how to change the password.

20viona · 09/05/2021 13:10

Change it!!

HollowTalk · 09/05/2021 13:10

They sound really cheeky if they don't have a good relationship with you and didn't even give a reason.

Barbitchurate · 09/05/2021 13:12

You need to change your wifi password.

And then you need to change all your other passwords as well.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 09/05/2021 13:13

And while you're changing password, change your WiFi address to

DontYouFuckingDare

ChaosTrulyReigns · 09/05/2021 13:14

Disclaimer:

Apostrophes might be available in WiFi addresses, but I'm not that tech savvy

1WayOrAnother2 · 09/05/2021 13:15

The reason you have a password on your wifi is so that people not paying for it (and not responsible for what is downloaded/viewed) can't use it!

Why would you give this away?

Turn it off until you learn how to change the password.

Toddlerteaplease · 09/05/2021 13:19

Why should they use something you pay for, for free.

Horehound · 09/05/2021 13:24

Does your package include a download limit? Because if they use it all up you might be charge for additional...

Viviennemary · 09/05/2021 13:25

They could access illegal porn and it would be traced back to you. What a mad idea to give them the password.

Horehound · 09/05/2021 13:29

@Viviennemary

No, that's utter bollocks. It would be traced back to the computers/tablet/phones IP address.
Tistheseason17 · 09/05/2021 13:32

Op - have you changed the password, yet?

Our neighbours are lovely and if their WiFi was temp down we would lend - but we have internal secure networks for our photo libraries so it would be only until they were sorted. And... your neighbours are not nice!

TheQueef · 09/05/2021 13:35

Not really HH the IP address would be the OP, it's their service.
Different device on the network but the IP would be OPs.

waitingforthenextseason · 09/05/2021 13:35

You need to change the password and have a talk with your DP.

AliceMcK · 09/05/2021 13:37

Change it before they do. They could be downloading anything on your WiFi.

If they knock again just say no, you don’t have to justify why you don’t want to pay for their internet or why you don’t want people using yours.

tara66 · 09/05/2021 13:37

Explain to them they can get it for themselves as a paid for service.

MMMarmite · 09/05/2021 13:39

This seems an odd choice. I'd only give my wifi password to my neighbours if they were nice people who had a specific reason for needing it (e.g. theirs was temporarily broken). Why are you giving your bandwidth away for free to people you dislike?

luccyloo · 09/05/2021 13:39

If you can't change the password you can normally access a list of connected devices. If you can find this you can kick them off.

SunflowersAndLavender · 09/05/2021 13:40

she just knocked on and asked for it and dp didn’t question her. She didn’t say why she needed it either

WTF?

Change your password. Think seriously about change your partner. He sounds like a rather dim child.

Abetes · 09/05/2021 13:40

Change it immediately. Too much of a risk.

Lampzade · 09/05/2021 13:41

Your neighbours have the brass neck to ask for your WiFi password despite your having issues with them. Cheeky feckers . Change your password

I had a neighbour who refused to acknowledge let alone talk to me and my dh . They then knocked on our door asking to use our skip .
Dh and I were not at home but my dd allowed neighbours to use the skip.
Neighbours filled the skip to the brim and therefore we were not able to put anything else in said skip

UrAWizHarry · 09/05/2021 13:42

Change the password and the SSID immediately. Utter madness to share it with anyone outside your household

Aquamarine1029 · 09/05/2021 13:43

Is your partner always this daft? I would be furious.
