I keep getting static shocks

Anyone else?

for the last couple of weeks I've been getting loads of static shocks. Not just normal things like jumpers either.

This morning I kissed DS on top of his head and there got a shock on my lips! At about 11ish I turned on a tap and it gave me a shock. Door handles - shock. Hug DD shock. All with a proper loud clicky noise and DD swears she saw a spark when I touched the radiator the other day.

NO ONE else is getting them unless I am involved IYSWIM - so dp and dd could hug and nothing would happen.

Its nothing to do with the house because I get them outside. I don't thiknk its to do with my clothes because I change them daily anyway and it still happens.

Any explanation??? Any one else? Or am I being contacted from the afterlife by some evil spirit?? Or well ... what?

@ItsDinah

Dry air can cause them. Carry a metal object like a key and use it to deliberately discharge yourself of the static charge every so often. You do this by touching the key to another metal object. To avoid shocks from cars, grip the metal part of the door with both hands before you put your feet onto the ground. If you're outside the car, touch the key to a metal part of the car before touching it with your hands.
Thanks for this!

I get them around this time.for the rest of summer every year, except they're so.painful it hurts deep into my elbow etc. there's a running injoke in my family not to touch me when "mum's static shock season starts".

I've always had them so have both DS's and yes we have actually seen sparks.

I used to get them regularily in M&S when I touched the shelves in the food hall, I think after static built up walking on their carpet. Also from lift buttons

However I never got them off cars until recently. The last few months I've had one every time off the car door. I have to cover my skin now

Oldraver · 24/04/2021 09:44

I have to add... I can never vacuum our bedroom as I get a shock off the metal bed, so OH does it

iamthesandstorm · 24/04/2021 09:44

Me! Every time I open the patio door!

SnowdaySewday · 24/04/2021 10:29

Me too, I just blamed not having my hair cut for so long as they're worse when it's newly washed.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 24/04/2021 10:29

I've been getting a lot recently too. Mostly off my car.
There's a local shopping centre I hate going to because every time I need to use any of the lifts I get a massive shock from the buttons. My mum can press them fine, but not me.

Yes M and S is the worst for this!
Mollypolly2610 · 24/04/2021 18:37

How strange - I’ve had this too over the past couple of weeks. The oven, shopping trolley and shelves, many things. I zapped my DH the other day and he just sat and looked at me like I’d done it deliberately Grin

I thought it was my Aldi slippers!

Ijustlikedthename · 24/04/2021 19:23

Yes! Numerous times a day from tons of objects and all of my family members. The other members of the family only seem to get them from me me not each other! I even checked the electrics weren't dodgy in the house a couple of weeks ago as I thought we may have an issue when I got a couple of massive ones from light switches!

Cowbells · 24/04/2021 19:25

@JMAngel1

It can be a perimenopausal symptom
Really? I had no idea of this. I used to get them a lot at that time.
Cowbells · 24/04/2021 19:25

I keep accidentally zapping the cat. He looks a bit sad and puzzled.

TurquoiseDragon · 24/04/2021 19:49

I've had a lot more static shocks than usual. And I notice I get them more when I've not taken my multivitamins for a while. Started taking them again a few days ago and the number of shocks has already decreased.

LovingBob · 24/04/2021 19:57

Yes, this past week off the car and the washing machine

mum2jakie · 24/04/2021 20:01

OMG! I've been getting them all week. Thanks for bringing this up! I was convinced it was linked to hand sanitizer!

delilahbucket · 24/04/2021 20:02

Yep, it's driving me mad. My hair is constantly crackling and sticking to me and I live in fear of touching anything metal or human 😂. It was even worse at work yesterday when I was working with a 100% polyester fabric.

JellyBabiesFan · 24/04/2021 20:02

Are you wearing the same shoes each time it happens?

YellowScallion · 24/04/2021 20:06

I used to take my shoes off at work and walk round in socks when it was dry. We had those nylon carpet tiles and if you wore any sort of rubber soled shoes you'd build up static then get a shock every time you touched a filing cabinet.

3CCC · 24/04/2021 20:51

There's one chair it has fuzzy upholstery and it always zaps me

If my dressing gown touches my bed stead I get zapped then too

I've had it from the dog too. No idea if she notices or not. The first time she certainly did

LongIslandIcedT · 24/04/2021 20:55

I get them when I'm wearing my UGG type slippers, I don't know what it is about them but everything I touch shocks me.

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 24/04/2021 21:01

Omg yes! My hair has been super static the past few days, I assumed it was because I have whacked a box dye on and it usually feels weird for few days. Been getting shocks too, accidentally shocked the dog earlier he was confused Grin

UpAt5amAgain · 25/04/2021 07:06

If forgotten about lifts. I've missed shopping in person but I have not missed a painful spark every time I press a lift button!

BarbaraofSeville · 25/04/2021 08:42

Glad I saw this thread, I've been getting them off the car door and I was thinking it was some sort of electrical fault.

StillMedusa · 25/04/2021 09:42

Yes! I've always been a bit prone to them (can't touch shop rails) but this last week or so Im scared to touch anything.. I keep shocking the cat, the dog, my car hates me and I have to brace myself to touch the light switches!
