'One project a day' thread

... many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :)

@springisintheair2021 - Finally moved the ( FB bargain) oak bookcase that was just sat in my narrow hallway for the past month. This meant no-one could reach the coat rack nor open the door wide enough to get in and out. Why do we put up with something so annoying, for so long, when we know that 10 minutes of effort will make such a difference? I have a pile of clean clothes, not ironed but I don't care cos they are mostly pjs, on the floor next to my bed and they've been there for a fortnight...

I did a second base coat of paint on all of the mirror and picture frames today, in the hope that the acrylic size might come tomorrow.

Then I had the brilliant idea to paint the fireplace wall. (If I'm going to paint the newly stripped fire surround I don't want it on a dirty green-tinged cream wall do I?) Ran out of paint, couldn't reach the uppermost parts, dislodged a circle of plaster. Sad

More paint is on the shopping list.
Inspect and fill missing plaster circle is on the DH list.

I've managed tomdo half the tile stickers, and loads of washing.
Unfortunately that means I now have loads of ironing to do tonight.

LlamaofDrama · 25/04/2021 20:33

I did the bras yesterday, and planted the sweet pea seeds today. Fingers crossed they germinate! Last week's cosmos and rudbeckia are doing great already.

Tomorrow before I go and get bedding plants I need to check the bulbs and work out what I'm planting in the tubs and therefore what else will work with them. Tomorrow is looking tight for time, I really ought to do some prep tonight but hmm. Not sure that's happening!

Next job is a nasty. It had better be sorting out my bedside table. Piles of books that I want to read but I'm too lazy to actually do it. Piles of crap. And it can't be cleaned because of the mess. That might be two days' job, top and inside the drawer.

Divineswirls · 25/04/2021 22:10

I cleaned my patio with jeyes 4 in 1 from local Lidl after popping in there for clothes hangers and other random items most of which I put back before buying as I get completely carried away on the middle aisles. Never used it before so no idea if it'll actually work. it needs to do its thing for a few days. Failing that I'll try diluted bleach. No outside tap so no pressure washer. Fingers crossed it works

AdoraBell · 25/04/2021 22:21

I’ve been slacking. DD came for a few days and today DH and I out today.

I planted some things out and watered plants.

DownUdderer · 26/04/2021 04:53

Sort pile of books for charity or keep.

TheHoneyBadger · 26/04/2021 06:22

I said I was going to join in then had the perfect excuse of twisting my ankle and only managing a painful hobble.

My tasks are going to be really small compared to some. It’s been a full on year and my house is a mess.

Today I will get the laundry mountain in the kitchen put away and another load of washing done and hung out. Hopefully I can do that before work.

Divineswirls · 26/04/2021 09:45

I've used the last of the patio cleaner in a more concentrated mix and poured it over last nights attempt this morning, so todays project done. It can take up to a couple of weeks to perform its magic so I'll just have to wait and see. I'm convinced it's looking worse.

BlueLobelia · 26/04/2021 11:51

I have been very garden focused and neglected the house. Off work today so hoping to get back on track. I planted marigolds, and swapped tomato seedlings for rainbow chard.

Today i need to clean out the fridge and pre-make dinner as I have a zoom chat with DS's form teacher at 6 pm.

I got the step ladders out and washed the neglected outside windows that I can't usually reach easily.
Nice sparkly shiny windows. 🪟

Breathmiller · 26/04/2021 12:36

Hope your ankle heals quickly @thehoneybadger

Breathmiller · 26/04/2021 12:36

Woops, didn't mean to @ you.

Wildernesstips · 26/04/2021 12:52

DivineSwirls if the Jeyes doesn’t work, soda crystals usually do.

Breathmiller · 26/04/2021 13:18

Just took 2 doors off their hinges. Which to put back up in their respective spaces is a bigger job than I thought. So, that rather kindly leaves that job for my dh who seems to know what he's talking about more than me.
But that's the job started at least.

Divineswirls · 26/04/2021 13:38

@Wildernesstips

DivineSwirls if the Jeyes doesn’t work, soda crystals usually do.
Thanks Smile

I always have soda crystals lying around. I should have thought about trying that first followed then by bleach failing that. Blimming Lidl and it's middle aisle Grin

It's going to rain for a few days supposedly so once it's finished I'll crack on with soda crystals if the jeyes hasn't done anything

Tara336 · 26/04/2021 14:14

Today I emptied the bird feeder of fat balls that had started growing (birds obviously didn’t like them) and refilled with seed. Cleaned all the glass on the patio table and garden table and cleaned all the windows and doors at the back of the house. Set the water feature up and started it running.

RunningKatie · 26/04/2021 14:38

Today I've given away some books that the dc have outgrown, booked my car into the garage and bought some school uniform that the dc need!

rosegoldwatcher · 26/04/2021 15:14

The acrylic size arrived this morning so 2 photo frames are now (inexpertly) gilded.
It's very fiddly but satisfying.

elizabethdraper · 26/04/2021 15:19

Loads of my projects got stuck this week due to an insane work load but today

  1. Went through the children's clothes sorted into charity, clothes bank and friends bags. All in the car now for delivery
  1. Sorted through the hot press, have a bag of old sheets and duvets covers for the dog rescue
  2. Sorted through my shoes and clothes all ready for the charity shops if they ever open again

Tomorrow jobs, are bottle bank, clothes bank and animal rescue for drop off

Catname · 26/04/2021 15:35

This morning I sorted through two boxes of FIL's stuff that we are keeping and found homes for it all. Much more to do but it's a start.

Fnib · 26/04/2021 15:54

I have cleared out a drawer each day for 3 days. Drawers are orderly and I have a bag to go to the salvation army, and a little bit more than usual in the bin.

iwonttaketheeasyroad · 26/04/2021 16:05

Hello

Can i join too please! I have so much to do in my house , I get overwhelmed so this might help me get on top of things. Today , just a small one i am going to get on top of the laundry and put it all away

Great thread, thank you

SydneyCarton · 26/04/2021 17:36

Quick last minute one; sorted through the basket of hats and gloves in the children’s bedroom, tossed anything too small and rearranged the stuff so the winter things are at the bottom and sun hats and baseball caps etc are on top. Also found three pairs of too small girls shoes that won’t pass down to DS and put them in a charity bag.

SimplyGrateful · 26/04/2021 19:02

Yesterday, I cleared the patio area outside the greenhouse. There is now room to sit at the little bistro table I have there.

For the self care task, I drank 8 glasses of water. I don't think I've had to pee so much in one day before. Today, a retired doctor friend of mine told me the 8 glasses a day rule was introduced by a bottled water company as a marketing ploy and it is all pretty pointless. Any drink will do, apparently.

Today, I tidied up my bedroom, although there is a little more to do. For self car, I am walking at least 10,000 steps. I have less than 1,500 to do and the evening dog walk should sort that out.

Tomorrow, I am going to finish the bedroom and start on the en-suite. For self care, I'm going to make a start on a new painting, even if it's just a few preliminary sketches.

2020nymph · 26/04/2021 19:10

@SimplyGrateful I love that you include self care too. I'm good at drinking water but I am guilty of going days without doing any exercise.

Today I have ordered new curtains and bedding for DS1's room. Also sorted out 15 years of promotion T-shirt's/swag. Another 3 bags ready to go.
