'One project a day' thread

BlueLobelia · 18/04/2021 12:51

... many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :)

Today I sorted out a drawer in my desk, cleaned DS's disgusting bag which had food mashed in. Didn't trust him to clean every last bit. Also bought some varnish to seal some pots we painted and a new cake box to replace the one DH broke 18 months ago.

ToastTriangles · 22/04/2021 00:27

@BlueLobelia glad you got the book, hope it helps with the motivation. And hugs to you and DS, bullying is just awful. I hope school are helping in some way.

As expected I've not got much done yesterday/today as I'm out of the house 12 hours+ on working days but I sent an email to a company about doing a repair in our bathroom, ordered new hob control buttons since 2 have some damage on them and moved a 10l paint tub in the spare room that I've been walking around every time I go in there for the last two weeks! Why?!

For all the gardeners can anyone help with my new plant? I have killed every plant I have ever owned, 2 have died this year! I bought a golden dragon tree from B&Q (to replace the yukka that died-apparently hard to kill.... I got new blinds and think it wasn't getting enough light-the new one says it shouldn't need direct sun) It was a little wilty when I got it and since watering and spritzing leaves it hasn't perked up at all. Should I be concerned? Should I be doing more? One thing I read said put it in the shower and give it some warm water then turn it cold but I thought they like it drier and there's so much information saying don't let the roots get too wet because they will rot. I bought plant food but don't want to put it in with more water yet incase I over water it. Any advice greatly appreciated.

What a brilliant thread! Please can I join? I have many projects on my mental list. Yesterday, I made a start on writing the list down Grin

I think today's project will be to wash the front door and maybe the window aswell if sleeping child allows.

mogloveseggs · 22/04/2021 06:29

This is brilliant!
Today's project shall be clean the stained patches on the stairs carpet

Passthecake30 · 22/04/2021 06:32

Today’s project is to tidy a corner on my bedroom floor which has become a dumping ground.

Tyredofallthis1 · 22/04/2021 06:34

I'm still working on the dining room, but I think I will add in a small one to break things up, so I can feel an achievement. I'm going to wash the kitchen door.

ChilliWillies · 22/04/2021 06:36

Today is finish tidying my sons room and measure his duvet so I can make him a new duvet cover

DownUdderer · 22/04/2021 06:43

Today I've cleaned and tidied my front entryway, it had become a dumping ground. I've ordered a shoe rack for shoe organization.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 22/04/2021 06:58

Today's task is to order the storage containers I need for our bedroom. I'm on a mission to make our bedroom look fresher & tidier - have bought new bedding & curtains, now I want to find proper homes for all the stuff that is on our dressing table!

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 22/04/2021 07:02

Today's project is to tackle a tea stain on the living room carpet.

DownUdderer · 22/04/2021 07:08

Tomorrow I'm thinking about dropping off three bags at a charity bin.

Bin85 · 22/04/2021 07:13

I am in too please. Some good ideas here.

RunningKatie · 22/04/2021 07:22

Today I am going to tackle the dining room table, it has been turned into a dumping zone and is becoming unusable.
I also need to phone the builder.
And book a smear test.

Walkingwounded · 22/04/2021 07:30

Oh this is an amazing thread. Thank you OP.

I have been feeling overwhelmed with everything that needs doing (moved into new house 18 months ago and so much to be done).

Have been paralysed so that the jobs are mounting, small and big, while I procrastinate/ try to escape.

Today I am going to order the light switches for the electrician to put in. And not beat myself up for not doing the rest. One down!

Breathmiller · 22/04/2021 08:25

A long working day ahead so I will be a one job Jenny today which is fine of course. Inspired by someone yesterday I will wash the builder's plastertly fingerprints off my living room door.
Then as part of my admin for work I will sort out a bill that I want to change from a yearly bill to direct debit.

Also plan on clearing out my email inbox a bit more. I've been doing a bit everytime I log on.

Breathmiller · 22/04/2021 09:38

For those starting out on TOMM keep with it. It does work and gets easier each week. I started it at the beginning of the year and it has made a massive difference to how I approach the cleaning. I feel I am keeping on top of it luch more than I ever have. It doesn't overwhelm me as much as it did. I don't do it religiously, i don't mind if I miss a day or two. Or if I don't get everything done in a day. But it definitely feels more manageable. I do Monday to Wednesday and dh does the kitchen on Thursday and the every day stuff on Friday. We both muck in at the weekend and rope in the kids too to do the laundry or a hoover or tidy up.

The first few weeks felt like a massive job but it just keeps getting quicker and easier each week as the jobs arent so big as you only did them the last week.
The same theory as this thread really. A little bit often, makes a big difference when added up.

I washed my door and feeling pleased with myself. Now going to make an indent into my emails.

TenCornMaidens · 22/04/2021 10:16

I put some things in the loft and got out my box of summer clothes . Have a pile to take to the chazzer later.

Also changed my dd's sheets and did a few other bits and bobs.

BlueLobelia · 22/04/2021 10:23

Oh just a quick checkin.

I mentioned upthread I bought DS a new navy duvet set. He was very pleased and has spent alot of time setting up his room and rearranging things. It makes me happy because he is very severely affected by ASD and a number of other issues such as tourettes and epilepsy and making his room a sanctuary is soemthing that is shamefully overdue. Last night he gave his friends a zoom tour. I feel so ashamed I never did this before. He has never indicated he cared much one way or another.

Today, I have sorted the pile at the top of the stairs. It’s been there for ages and felt completely overwhelming, yet when I actually got in with it, it only took ten minutes!
Yesterday, DH and I actually got round to putting some boxes up I t he attic. They have been sat beside our bed for several months. Again, it only took a few minutes and has made a huge difference.

ImFree2doasiwant · 22/04/2021 10:55

Late joiner......I started decluttering at the start of the year, made huge progress. But have quite a few small things I could class as projects along side the continued declutter.

ImFree2doasiwant · 22/04/2021 11:01

Today - tidy the kitchen side dumping area.

Sparklynewname · 22/04/2021 11:38

I’ve been busy already today: DHs car to garage so I followed him and then took him to work. Went and collected my new dishes from dunelm. Then went to Booker and bought more washing powder. Then had a text from boots saying DS’s prescription is ready so went to collect that and got fuel.
Come home, had brunch and just having a coffee while I catch up on this thread.
Plan now: drink coffee, water new front pots as they are wilted, get out Hoover and Hoover out crockery drawer and wipe it before putting in the new stuff which is currently in the dishwasher. Hoover up all the bits and bobs and plaster dust which is through the kitchen utility and loo. Mop floors. Plant back pots.
DH informs me that our green bin was emptied early this morning. Funny cause we haven’t paid for it to be done and it was full of soil as I was going to start a compost bin in it 😂. It lives out the front of our house and I won’t be moving it. If they want to keep collecting it, fine by me!

farfromthenoise · 22/04/2021 11:53

Toddler wrangling again to day so only setting myself micro project-clean out and wash make up bag!

Catname · 22/04/2021 11:59

Today I have replaced 7 lightbulbs - the previous owners of our house were obsessed by halogen spotlights so this is the last of them to be swapped to LED’s.

I’ve also put the sofa covers that I washed yesterday back on, dusted all of the skirting boards upstairs, and ordered a tiller for the garden as I have a lot of plants to go into new beds we’ve had dug. They were supposed to be rotovated but my idea of rotovated and the landscapers is clearly different.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 22/04/2021 12:26

Our patio furniture arrived this morning so I've assembled and tested it. It's very nice and comfy Grin Dinner out there tonight, definitely.

I'm going to empty and fill the dishwasher now; not really a project, but I'm hoping that by getting that done before DH gets home, he'll be free to bring a few barrow loads of compost to my new salad bed. I just did two but my arms are like spaghetti now, I don't feel like tackling any more. And I really need to start planting. I could always plant my maincrop spuds in the meantime though.

Our front fence needs scraping (it's quite licheny) and varnishing. I might tackle that today as well. Most of the other potential projects are waiting for all my seedlings to get out of the way, or for stuff to arrive from Ikea.
