Worst human ever (probably dramatic)

I feel terrible! A year or so ago I saw a black dot in my sink and went to wash it away when I realised it was the teeniest baby snail.
I rescued it and I've taken care of it until the weather gets a little bit warmer and he/ she gets bigger.
I was thinking of releasing it and I've just cleaned out it's little home. I noticed it wasn't in there so had a look around and spotted it in the kitchen wall. I've just tried to move it and heard a little crack noise SadSadnow I've cracked the shell slightly after all this time. I feel awful!! It's still on the wall, I'm hoping to somehow get it back into its home and really really hoping it heals.
Not much point to this post except to share my extreme guilt

I used to work with someone who's final year dissertation project was something to do with snails, she knew everything about them. Hope snaily makes a full recovery

Awww your amazing and not dramatic.

My dh and 5yr old dd1 brought in a little cluster of little yellow eggs in September which they had found buried in a plant pot. They were interested to see what they would hatch into. So they put them in an old fish tank, lovingly reburied them, and put some leaves in. A few days later they hatched into barely visible snailets (disclaimer: probably not the official term). Dd loved them and kept them. After a few weeks she had 17 big strapping healthy snails. Cucumber, lettuce, crushed eggshells for calcium, and fishfood flakes for protein, as advised by professor google.

Her snails thrived. They were very happy. Do you know what thriving happy animals do? They make more of themselves to share the bounty. By January we started to notice the first little clusters of yellow eggs. Aww, sweet. Then more. And more. And more. We now have approximately eleventy-cajillion baby snails. We had to get them a second tank. We aren’t allowed (apparently) to release them into the wild until after the last frost, which i’m desperately hoping will be by this weekend. We will singlehandedly skew any wildlife stats for the county just by taking the lids off.

you see where one misplaced idea can get you? Snailageddon.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 13/04/2021 21:04

Ps - meant to write, before i started ranting, that they repair their shells very quickly, but do give them crushed eggshells to help.

Awww after all the sniping on other threads this is lovely. 🐌 long live snaily❤️

effiehabb · 13/04/2021 21:36

I'm rooting for snaily. I remember a few years ago going for a walk at dusk and I saw a snail climbing up a lamppost vertically, this lamppost was really, really tall and I was so worried he'd get to the top and die of exhaustion or something, anyway I shimmied up about half a foot to peel him off and put him back on the ground. I realise I probably looked crazy but I would've felt worse if I would have left him to his exhaustion induced doom. Grin

Cute! You've had the snail for a year??

Salvationz · 14/04/2021 00:15

Agree with @IndecentCakes

StillMedusa · 14/04/2021 00:51

Snails are fab! Get a cuttlefish from a pet shop (sold for parrots) or go and pick one off a beach (Bournemouth is great for them)
I used to keep Giant African Land snails and loved them... I'd give them a little tepid shower once a week when I cleaned their tank and they would poke out of their shells and really LOOK at me!
Mind you I once forgot to put the lid back on their (huge) tank and came down the next day to find two enormous snails 6 foot up the living room wall!!!!!

StormBaby · 14/04/2021 00:58

You are very cute OP!

Did you know that a group of snails is called a Walk? 😂

AppleDolphin · 14/04/2021 01:33
