I feel terrible! A year or so ago I saw a black dot in my sink and went to wash it away when I realised it was the teeniest baby snail.
I rescued it and I've taken care of it until the weather gets a little bit warmer and he/ she gets bigger.
I was thinking of releasing it and I've just cleaned out it's little home. I noticed it wasn't in there so had a look around and spotted it in the kitchen wall. I've just tried to move it and heard a little crack noise SadSadnow I've cracked the shell slightly after all this time. I feel awful!! It's still on the wall, I'm hoping to somehow get it back into its home and really really hoping it heals.
Not much point to this post except to share my extreme guilt

I used to keep Giant African Lands Snails. Definitely get some cuttle fish bone for the calcium.
Don’t feed them celery ( as it’s toxic to them)
I got some wood lice from the garden to put in with mine as a clean up crew.

Wow this has blown my mind. I am frightened to admit that at the tender age of 29, I have only just learnt that snails are physically attached to their shells and (allegedly?!) can't live without them. You always come across empty snail shells in the garden...I thought slugs were basically snails who sacked off their shell and would hitch another onto their back if it took their fancy. I didn't know it was a part of their anatomy they were born with.

I love how invested you are in your snail OP. It's really quite adorable. Come onnnn snaily Thanks

eaglejulesk · 14/04/2021 02:52

You sound lovely snail lady. Flowers I love snails.

Jabba2020 · 14/04/2021 03:28

Love this post.
So many lovely people showing concern for Snaily has made me smile.

ingeborg3 · 14/04/2021 03:34

Beautiful post! There is a documentary on Netflix about snails... it shows them in a very poetic light. I like them, too. I fed and watered a ladybug in the winter sometime.

Footle · 14/04/2021 06:52

I think they're non-binary. Or is that worms? I could look it up but I prefer to let it remain Snaily's secret.

This reminds me of a joke! What did the slug say to the snail?

"Big Issue, sir?"

Hermaphrodites.

The actually have their penis in their head. It’s very strange.

thesunwillout · 14/04/2021 07:53

Op this is a great post, totally something I would do.
I think you're lovely for helping snaily and he or she, (is there a way to know?) is a very blessed little creature.

iamtheoneandonlyyy · 14/04/2021 09:18

Well wow, I am shocked and happy at the interest in snaily Grin
I'm going to say she just because it's easier.
She's zooming around this morning, can't see any sign of damage or stress not that I know what a stressed snail looks like
Eggshells are in and getting cuttlefish later 👍🏻
Yes to pp, it's been about a year so I've become weirdly attached Grin
I'm also now a bit worried about snailgeddon so I'll keep my eyes peeled
Thanks for so many replies

Awww I think I love you @iamtheoneandonlyyy, you crazy snail lady 🐌 🥰

transbadger · 14/04/2021 10:46

Wonderful thread. Sending good vibes to Snaily.

🐌🌈🤍

Hellocatshome · 14/04/2021 11:15

Does snaily have to be released into the wild?! I'm wondering if snaily would be happier where she is and less likely to be bird lunch.

IhateBoswell · 14/04/2021 11:30

How is Snaily doing today OP? 🐌 🥬

IhateBoswell · 14/04/2021 11:32

Aah teach me not to refresh before writing, is opened the page this morning and then got sidetracked 🙄

Go Snaily 🥳

BlueLobelia · 14/04/2021 11:35

We are snail and slug lovers here also. We have a massive lily bush that is of no use to anyone except the thousands of snails who have made it their home. People always ask us why the ugly manky lily bush is still in the garden. 'Because it is the castle of the snails'.

have you seen the glorious bright copper coloured slugs with a sort of frilled necks you get? They are truly lovely.

ComDummings · 14/04/2021 11:38

OK you and little snaily are so cute

Aprilshowersandhail · 14/04/2021 11:43

We used to put a dab of nail varnish on a few when dc were little. Wanted to keep track of if the same omes kept returning to the garden!

girlofnow · 14/04/2021 14:59

This is the luckiest snail ever. She'd have been bird food by now outside. Well done for giving snaily a stress free life of luxury.

iamtheoneandonlyyy · 14/04/2021 15:53

I feel torn between releasing her into her natural life and keeping her safe, the idea of her getting chomped is horrible but that's nature so it's tricky.
I'll be waiting a little bit longer either way so she's tough enough Grin

I sense the beginnings of a snail sanctuary

HectorHalloumi · 14/04/2021 16:27

Oh release her when the time is right. She needs freedom and a chance of a natural life.

We need pictures when you do though and weekly updates 🐌

MoppaSprings · 15/04/2021 00:53

Regarding being overrun with snails, with GIant African Land Snails once they lay the best thing to do is crush them and feed them back for protein( sounds barbaric). If you choose to let them hatch you are supposed to cull the runts every few weeks as in the wild these ones wouldn’t survive and if they do grow they usually have something wrong with them. I knew a few people who fed them to lizards.
But with native snails you can just pop them outside when they hatch and let nature take its course.
