If you could share one household tip/life hack, what would it be?

Mine would definitely be that drying clothes in sunlight gets rid of tomato/sauce stains. Am weaning my second child and it's a bloody lifesaver. No more soaking things for hours that still come out with orange marks on them.

What other gems are there that I need to know?

Rubber broom...especially if you have a pet dog (or three)or/and a cat(s). Picks up hair like a magnet!

Tessabelle74 · 13/04/2021 17:27

Use scissors for cutting pizza, meat etc! Saves much faffing with knives and kids can help too!

Pat123dev · 13/04/2021 17:27

Live on your own, in a box with just a few things.... definitely not on a farm with 3 kids 2 dogs, cat and various other animals that randomly walk in your house to see if you getting ready to feed up Hmm

VaggieMight · 13/04/2021 17:28

Right for tight, left for loosey

Wash clothes whatever way they were taken off. Don't bother faffing turning clothes the right way round. Saves so much time.

If you are having a bad day and can't face the washing up put it in the dishwasher and run it 3 times.

Make sure that all the washing up is done before you go to bed it will make your morning so much more relaxing when you come down and there isn't a stack of dishes that need doing.

Have crap baskets for each person so that when you're tidying up you can just throw their stuff in their basket and then it's their responsibility to put it away. If the basket doesn't get emptied within a week throw the stuff out.

Bleachmycloths · 13/04/2021 17:40

Make your bed every morning.
It really works. (I was a slob for years and thought it was a waste of time but I was wrong 😊).
Get up, pull the covers back, bash the pillows, open the window. Spray with Febreze if you’re into that kind of thing...
Half an hour later, or before you go to work, make the bed.
I think it works because it gets you in the right frame of mind for the rest of the day.

@MrsBobDylan

Don't have dogs, especially don't have three dogs. Or children. Or live with a partner.
Hilarious....
MerryMarigold · 13/04/2021 17:42

Grate courgette and put it in cake. Really delicious as you can't taste it but makes cake moist and more healthy!!

MerryMarigold · 13/04/2021 17:45

We have these. They are called 'boxes of doom' in this house.

expectopelargonium · 13/04/2021 17:46

@Lassy1945 Some of the photos date from the mid-late 1800's, so it would be a really long shot. I have dozens of them.

Chrysanthemum5 · 13/04/2021 17:46

@Mummabear89 I don't know if I'm being a bit daft but I can't understand this tip:

If you are having a bad day and can't face the washing up put it in the dishwasher and run it 3 times.

Easilyannoyed · 13/04/2021 17:46

A Roomba robotic vacuum. LOVE it. Especially since getting a dog.

Shell4429 · 13/04/2021 17:46

@Chicchicchicchiclana

Aside from dishes, cooking and laundry, no one needs to spend more than 3 hours per week cleaning. Don't clean things that are already clean (as per Mrs Hinch and co).
3 hours?! I clean much less than that! Hmm
carlcaulkett · 13/04/2021 17:48

Kiwifruit only need to be washed, not peeled (courtesy of a tweet by Lifehacker :-) )

expectopelargonium · 13/04/2021 17:51

Funny, I've found the opposite. Especially since some of my family have a habit of putting trousers and pyjama bottoms in the wash with one leg the right way and the other inside-out. Same with jumpers and shirt sleeves. When they're all wet it's more of a pain to try and turn them the right way out so you can hang them up to dry.

MusicWithRocksIn1t · 13/04/2021 17:52

When you're over tired hide a bottle of wine in the messiest room in the house, you'll forget where it is and when you really want it you'll Tidy the room to find it!

Happytodayhappytomorrow · 13/04/2021 17:53

If defrosting food in a hurry, put it in cold water and add salt to the water.

If trying to cool food quickly, put it in a plastic container, not a metal one.

Harmonypuss · 13/04/2021 17:54

5 best cleaning items I've found...

Steam Cleaner
Microfibre Cloths
White Vinegar
"Pink Stuff"
"Elbow Grease" (both the yellow spray stuff and your naturally occurring elbow power)

Yes, technically 6 but I find you can do virtually anything with a combination of these

CrumpetsForAll · 13/04/2021 17:56

@FuckyouCovid21

I haven't RTFT so hopefully this hasn't been mentioned but I'd be interested to know if you can turn whites back to white? My now ex put a load of darks in with some brand new white T shirts and sports bras and they are now dirty grey looking :-(
Did you dump him for messing up the laundry?!
TheSandman · 13/04/2021 17:57

When they're all wet it's more of a pain to try and turn them the right way out so you can hang them up to dry.

So either hang them up like that and turn them when they are dry or do what I do - when clothes are dry I return them (sorted) to my darling family inside out or half inside out and make THEM turn the bloody things.

AnnieSnap · 13/04/2021 17:58

Don’t have dogs that shed (lovely as they are). Have Poodles instead (there are 3 sizes, so one for everyone), says she picking white hair from the Siamese cat off her clothes!

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 13/04/2021 18:01

Hairspray can take biro off a light coloured leather chair. I've used it.
