If you could share one household tip/life hack, what would it be?

Mine would definitely be that drying clothes in sunlight gets rid of tomato/sauce stains. Am weaning my second child and it's a bloody lifesaver. No more soaking things for hours that still come out with orange marks on them.

What other gems are there that I need to know?

@Rummikub and @NotPennysboat I have a narrow filing cabinet from IKEA it was only £29 and came in different finishes/colours.

cloudrunner · 23/04/2021 00:54

@HollowTalk @Dandelion78

Omelettes with just eggs and bananas? No, but they make a delicious instant (and gluten-free) pancake - whisk an egg with fork, mash a banana, combine the two and cook gently. Unless banana is really ripe it doesn't have banana flavour, is just pleasantly slightly sweet.

Can eat plain, or with Greek yoghurt, nuts and berries, or anything else.

Oh I’ve seen that in IKEA. Does it hold a lot?
I’ve got 6/7 ring binders rammed full of papers and that’s the organised part! I have a folder with just essential documents- birth certs, drivers licence etc

Thatisnotwhatisaid · 23/04/2021 09:25

Clean as you go, don’t let it all build up. My DH is a bugger when he cooks and he leaves all of the cleaning until everyone’s eaten, it isn’t a very effective system at all. Wipe any spillages up straight away, wash the knives/blender/chopping board/ grater/garlic press etc when finished, put empty packaging and peelings straight in the bin and put condiments and spices away as soon as you’re done with them. That way when you’ve finished your meal, all that needs doing is the plates and cutlery.

charliebear78 · 23/04/2021 20:22

Never go empty handed

Simply put if your going somewhere and you see something that belongs where your going-take it

Sunnyday321 · 24/04/2021 14:00

Of your like me and buy fresh ginger , but then it sits there and eventually dries out. I now peel it ( by using a teaspoon ) and then grate all of it , put in ice cube trays, freeze. Pop them out, pack in a freezer bag for whenever you need it.

Chatanooga1 · 24/04/2021 14:42

When you have paid for your items, don’t leave the shop but stand aside and go through your shopping and remove excess packaging.

Give the excess packaging to staff to dispose of.

I also return packaging to store bins once I’ve finished with a product rather than wait up to two weeks for a refuse collection.

The stores charge me plenty for their products and make a healthy product so I let them deal with the majority of the packaging from items I have purchased from them.

Chatanooga1 · 24/04/2021 14:43

^^ healthy profit.

You really do this?

Chatanooga1 · 24/04/2021 15:13

Yes, of course. It takes seconds for them to place in a bin behind the till.

maggiethecat · 24/04/2021 17:43

With the warm(er) weather I've been leaving jugs of water with ice on the kitchen counter.

I use the 180g Philadelphia cream cheese containers to make ice. They are a neat size to pop in the freezer, have a lid and make a nice single block of ice to pop into the jug.

Reset and ready to go again!

KeflavikAirport · 24/04/2021 18:00

You can leave excess packaging at the till by law in Germany. Great idea 👍

LaMarschallin · 24/04/2021 20:33

Absolutely a great idea.
Is it a thing in the UK?

BadlyArrangedToasties · 24/04/2021 21:57

Wet marigold gloves take pet fur off of carpet. Put on gloves. Get wet. Wipe fur/hair with glove. Pulls it right up. Then rinse under tap go get fur off the gloves.
Also love how sunlight gets rid of stains -never cease to be excited by this.
Vinegar And water for cleaning wee from carpet.

Oh sticker labels for kids’ clothes and belongings. I order from a company called Stickins. Super cheap and I keep them in a box in the hall so if someone is wearing or taking something for the first time, I can slap on a label as they head out the door -if I haven’t already stuck one in. If you have a beaver of girl guide Bostick Fabric glue means never having to sew on a badge again! I avoid ironing and sewing at all costs.

BadlyArrangedToasties · 24/04/2021 22:13

I hate shopping and rarely go on dedicated Xmas or other event shopping trips. If I see something I think someone would like, I buy it. Doesn’t matter what time of year it is. I keep a notebook of what I have and list it under each person’s name. I also lost ideas, so I can go and order something later. I don’t tend to buy much ahead of time for kids as interests change, but for adults it’s pretty safe. I do list ideas though. My son is minecracf mad so have written down a book,soft toy he mentioned and a magazine subscription I saw. If he is still mad about it in de ember, I will get those things. So it’s an aide memoir.
I buy next size up for kids in clearance sales. So winter clothes for next winter in the summer sale etc

BadlyArrangedToasties · 24/04/2021 22:13

List -not lost!

CharityDingle · 25/04/2021 01:23

@JaneJeffer

Keep your keys on a lanyard (the ones with a removable clip) looped over your handbag strap. Then they can be fished out of your bag without rummaging. Life changer. Did you get this one from Roy Cropper?
I'm turning into Roy Cropper, as time goes on. Grin
CatsnCoffee · 25/04/2021 11:18

@BadlyArrangedToasties

I do this too. Also helps to spread the cost over the year. Same for Birthday presents and cards.😀

chiefbrain · 25/04/2021 17:21

@FinallyFluid

Buy Alexa and set her up on your phone, when one of the inmates says we need more bread, milk, insert as appropriate.........

I reply don't tell me, tell Alexa, then when I come to do the Tesco shop it is all there, and if it is not there tuffski, shitski.

Yes! I use the Alexa shopping list app and it's such a time saver. It's in the kitchen and as anything Is used up we add it to the shopping list.

A pp has mentioned this but the big blue IKEA bags for washing. They squish up small when not needed but hold a ton of washing.

BadlyArrangedToasties · 25/04/2021 18:37

Yes, it really helps spread the cost, too. In the good old days before covid I would stock up at card factory when they had their deals of 10 cards for 2 pounds or whatever ridiculous cheap price it was and be set for child birthday parties!

deeplyambivalent · 25/04/2021 18:51

To put on a duvet cover: turn cover inside out. Reach hands all the way into the two furthest corners. Gripping the corners, take hold of two corners of the duvet. Shake the cover out over the duvet.

CatsnCoffee · 26/04/2021 17:09

@BadlyArrangedToasties

Yes to that too!

mama3bears · 26/04/2021 19:18

@lolacola77

Help! I've got an infuriating garage sticker on the inside of my rear window. I've tried some goo off stuff with a plastic scraper but the fucker won't budge. It's right in my eyeline and it's black. I don't want to go apeshit with a scrubber as it's on the heating elements. Any cures? I know what is supposed to help but my car is nowhere where I could plug a hairdryer in 😡
Try Avon's Skin so Soft dry oil spray it's great at removing sticky labels
Rummikub · 26/04/2021 21:16

Today I bought a tub of the pink stuff as a result of a recommendation on this thread. £1- couldn’t resist
What shall I do with it...
Pp suggested cleaning toilet- do I just smear it on?
