What age did your child start calling you mum?

My mum said once she understood why we call her mum but if we ever wanted anything then my brother, sister and I had to say Mummy darling dearest most wonderful person in the whole wide world 😆
My 17 month old has just started calling me mummy and my heart sings every time he says it 🥰🥰🥰

LovingBob · 06/04/2021 22:25

I was always mum from the start, didn't like mummy.

ArtemisiaGentle · 06/04/2021 22:27

Mummy until about 8 or 9, but has never embraced Mum. Her dad calls me mum when talking about me but she hasn't taken it on board. My mother's day card said To Mumma which is kind of a bridge between the two. She says I look like a Mumma Confused. She's 14.5 yo

RickJames · 06/04/2021 22:27

We are mama and papa to my 10 year old. I often jokingly refer to myself as "your poor old mum" and always call DH daddy but mama and papa are standard in this country for the whole life (Germany) so I don't expect it will change.

Laeta · 06/04/2021 22:28

Mummy was dropped at about 10ish. Teenagers call me mum, but oldest, in 30s calls me Mother. 🙄

Tanfastic · 06/04/2021 22:28

My nearly 13 yr old ds switches between the two. He mostly calls me mummy in the house though.

Tryingtryingandtrying · 06/04/2021 22:30

The posher you are the later the switch in my experience.

underneaththeash · 06/04/2021 22:30

Ds14 still calls me mummy, DS12 has called me mum for a couple of years and DD alternates between mum and mummy (she’s 9).

Sobloodyexhausted · 06/04/2021 22:30

12yr old started calling me mum about a year ago but he also had a strange toddler period when be called me by my first name! 9 year old still calls me ‘mummy’. 9 month old is yet to call me anything but says ‘dada’ all the blooming time Envy

BrownEyedGirl80 · 06/04/2021 22:33

About 2 😩

RoseMartha · 06/04/2021 22:34

About 8 unless it is in a whining tone because they want something.

SusannahSophia · 06/04/2021 22:36

DS1 changed to mum around 8 yo, and DS2 about the same age. DS3 was a bit younger, mainly because he only ever heard DS1 & 2 saying mum. I didn’t mind with the older 2, it was what their friends did, but when DS3 stopped it felt a bit sad, end of an era.

Apileofballyhoo · 06/04/2021 22:42

DS calls us Ma and Da. I don't know anyone else who does. We were Ma and Da when he was tiny and just talking, then Mammy and Daddy, and now Ma and Da for about a year. He's 13. I can't say I like it, though it was cute when he was a toddler. I'm not keen on Mam either though. My DM is Mom, but the Irish Mom not the American one. Mammy when I was small.

I still remember the utter joy for both of us when he first called me Ma. Smile

louisejxxx · 06/04/2021 22:43

Similar to a pp - my 10 year ds still calls me mummy but would call me “my mom” to his friends.

BTV2000 · 06/04/2021 22:58

28, call my mum by her first name and my dad 'Dada' but elongate the 'a' so like Daahh-da. In conversation however my parents will refer to themselves as mummy and daddy e.g Daddy was at work today if I'm talking to my mum etc.

Cait73 · 06/04/2021 23:00

I'm raising my 2 yo grandson, he calls me Nanny I'd die if he called me NAN lol I don't know why 🤷🏼‍♀️

VanillaAndOrange · 06/04/2021 23:42

Before they started school. I didn't really like Mummy and was keen for them not to go to school saying it in case people thought they were a bit wet. Once they did start school, I found out that there were a lot of other children still using Mummy, but it still wasn't really my style.

Calmyertits · 06/04/2021 23:53

16m dd never called me mummy so far, went straight to mum! Copied her older brother

buckeejit · 07/04/2021 00:14

I'm in NI & know 70 year olds who still call their parents mammy & daddy!

Nat6999 · 07/04/2021 00:53

Around 6 or 7, ds called me mum if he was around people at school but it was still mummy at home.

IHaveBrilloHair · 07/04/2021 00:59

Dd was around 7 or 8 I think?
She now calls me Mother and I call her ChilderGrin

IHaveBrilloHair · 07/04/2021 01:07

I cringe when adult women call themselves Mummy, or have it as a username.
I've never done that.
I'd introduce myself as Brillo, Dd's Mum.

RightOnTheEdge · 07/04/2021 01:12

About 7/8 I think for my oldest and then her younger brother copied her.
They decided Mummy was for babies and they were too old to call me that.
They must have got it from school.

It's never been normal in my life for kids past primary to say Mummy and Daddy though. It's always thought of as what posh people do.

SocraticJunkieWannabe · 07/04/2021 11:38

13yo still calls me mummy except in front of friends

Sceptre86 · 07/04/2021 11:39

Dd aged 4, ds aged 3.5.
