What age did your child start calling you mum?

Ds started to call me mum last year when he was 10 and dd just started copying him, she was 6 at the time and it did make me a bit Sad but it’s just a name really and it doesn’t mean anything different. She did call me mummy the other day and it sounded weird to both of us.

DS recently turned 4 and he's been calling me "mum" for a while, he does still say "mummy" sometimes but "mum" seems to be getting more and more frequent! It makes me sad actually that he's growing up so fast, it is also quite cute but bittersweet

Nohomemadecandles · 06/04/2021 21:39

I'm clinging to it! 8 year old calls me mum and giggles whilst I shout "it's mummy!"

Horehound · 06/04/2021 21:40

My 19 month calls me mum. I don't know why because we have always said mummy. It's cute though. He kind if sings it. Muuuuummmmm

BluntlySpoken · 06/04/2021 21:41

Dd has always said mum or mumma. Mainly. Mum from day one

PaquitaVariation · 06/04/2021 21:41

My teens still call us mummy and daddy but refer to us as mum and dad when talking about us to other people.

Parkmama · 06/04/2021 21:45

I'm 39 and still saying Mummy to mine! Smile

VienneseWhirligig · 06/04/2021 21:45

I think DS was about 6 or 7. He is in his 20s now and calls me Mummy when he is trying to charm me into something Grin

I usually get Mum, Madre or Mother (if I'm telling him off).

penelopequiche · 06/04/2021 21:46

Dd is 12, don't ever remember her using mummy ☹️

folloyourarro · 06/04/2021 21:48

My 10 year old still does but heard him refer to me as mum to his friends! Still very much mummy to my 7 year old, I'm really dreading becoming mum, don't know why I'm not in the least bit a soppy mum but feels a really big milestone! My nieces under 5 call their parents mum and dad, I find it really odd for some reason.

JanuaryJonez · 06/04/2021 21:48

My DD is 14 and I think will always call me Mummy as I still call my own mum the same.

My 17yo DS changed to Mum when he went to secondary school (I think).

Coldwinterahead1 · 06/04/2021 21:49

About 6 but I encouraged them. I hated Mummy, much prefer Mum

Swearwolf · 06/04/2021 21:51

My 8 year old still calls me mummy, my 5 year old has called me mum for ages. I think it's personality and peer influence!

OddsNSodsBitsNBobs · 06/04/2021 21:59

Over the course of reception
/ Y1, started off interchangable but stuck at mum by 6½. My DC noticed other children were using mum/dad which spurred it on.

Nextyearwillbefun · 06/04/2021 22:01

@nohomemadecandles that's me! 7 year old wants to call me mummy but I'm fighting it!

DD has switched between mummy and mum since she could speak. I think I'm primarily 'mummy' still (she's 4.5) and I don't think she knows that 'mum' is an established alternative, she just likes shortening things (mangs = mango, Leddit = Let It Go, Reads and Writes = reading and writing, etc.).

Clymene · 06/04/2021 22:13

I think I became mum when my eldest was about 9 or 10? Not older than that. I still call my mum mummy and she's nearly 80!

BettySundaes · 06/04/2021 22:15

Mummy when she wants something, mum when she's with her mates, mother when she wants to patronise me!

EventuallyDistracted · 06/04/2021 22:16

Nudged them over to Mum and Dad around the time they started school, I never really liked Mummy.

ohisay · 06/04/2021 22:18

My two are 9 and 12. If I, or they, are talking about us, it's mum/dad. If they are talking directly to us, it's still mummy and daddy!
Although, I really find it tricky to say dad eg 'dad said' or 'ask dad' as my mind always thinks I'm referring to my dad, not theirs!

noblegreenk · 06/04/2021 22:19

My 2.5yr old has alreadt started using mummy and mum interchangeably. I don't like it, as it was only a couple of months ago that she was still calling me mama.

polkadotpixie · 06/04/2021 22:23

My 2 year old told me off the other day when I referred to myself as Mum..."your name isn't Mum, it's Mummy...silly Mummy!" 😂

1678bfj7 · 06/04/2021 22:24

We are 'mummy' and 'papa' in person, but when DD11is talking about us it's 'mum' and 'dad'.

Welldarn · 06/04/2021 22:24

My Dd just turned 16 has been calling me Mum for about 4 months now, it’s odd after nearly 16 years of mummy. She does call me Mother occasionally which I hate (can’t explain why though Grin)

My 47 year old work colleague on the phone to her parents calls them Mummy and Daddy, which seems really strange to me. So maybe it’s good that Dd has started calling me mum Smile
