I recently read a book with such a good twist it absolutely floored me. I usually see them coming but this time it absolutely blew my mind.

But now I am in the predicament that my next new book may disappoint so I'm asking for recommendations please.
I love psychological thrillers, mystery, crime and also dystopian and some teen lit.

I really really want something to shock and surprise me again.
Looking forward to perusing suggestions

Mark Edwards 'Because she loves me' is one of the worst books I've ever read. The Magpies is ok.

When We Were Romans is quite an unusual one (Matthew Kneale).

Some of Hilary Mantel's earlier novels could hit the spot. A Change of Climate was the one that came to mind first, although parts of it are among the most unpleasant things I have ever read.

You might like "The Basic Eight" by Daniel (Lemony Snickett) Handler, if you like plots with a twist.

Personally, my favourite book for a very long while has been "The Starless Sea" by Erin Morgenstern.

Hi op

Have you read last thing to burn by will dean? Absolutely brilliant psychological thriller - I was glued to it!

DarlingWithoutYou · 06/04/2021 21:11

I loved the silent patient! Brilliant twist.

I've downloaded Fingersmith now.

I'm currently reading the Jon Spicer series by Chris Simms and really enjoying them. Before this series I read the DCI Logan series by JD Kirk and enjoyed them as well. I'm noting down some of these I haven't read for when I've finished.

I've just read Where The Crawdads Sing which was just a fabulous book. Followed by The Testaments-loved it! Definitely recommend both.

I'm reading The Flower Girls which was recommended on another thread. It's about two young girls who are suspected of killing a toddler. Obviously quite dark but there's apparently a twist at the end and I'm completely engrossed so far.

I remember the first book I read where I couldn't fathom for the life of me where it was going. "House of Thunder" by Dean Koontz. I was a teenager and don't remember much else about it. I wonder if it would still have the same effect now I'm older and have read and seen much more!

BigSkyLife · 07/04/2021 19:56

The first fifteen lives of Harry August by Claire North, stayed with me for ages.

CaviarAndCigarettes · 07/04/2021 22:01

@StealthRoast yay! I'm thrilled!

@Corrag

I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes, I found it genuinely unputdownable.
I came on here to say the same. It is incredible.
Beebityboo · 10/04/2021 20:11

If you like non-fiction I just finished "Ghosts of the Tsunami" about the tsunami in Japan in 2011. Probably one of the most amazing, heart breaking books I have ever read in my life.

One of the best books I've ever read! I want to read it again! Have you read Behind Closed Doors by B A Paris? I found that gripping
theluckiest · 10/04/2021 20:24

I hated Behind Closed Doors...sorry!! Was just a bit too try hard and ended up making me cross..

However, I Am Pilgrim is bloody brilliant. Loved it.

And I have just read The Second Sleep by Robert Harris. Cor, what a brilliant book. Read it in a day. If you like twisty-turny books, this is great.
