I recently read a book with such a good twist it absolutely floored me. I usually see them coming but this time it absolutely blew my mind.

But now I am in the predicament that my next new book may disappoint so I'm asking for recommendations please.
I love psychological thrillers, mystery, crime and also dystopian and some teen lit.

I really really want something to shock and surprise me again.
Looking forward to perusing suggestions

Here to stay is the one I meant but there is The House Guest which is also good.

Ooooh... I've got hooked on Mark Edwards during this last year too. Started with The Magpies and I'm now on The House Guest.

Similar, with good twists is The Chalk Man (forgotten the Author's name sorry)

CaviarAndCigarettes · 05/04/2021 22:16

Whilst I'm here I'm also going to throw in an author I enjoy, Val McDermid. I've only read the Tony Hill/Carole Jordan ones but enjoyed them.
I do feel the later ones have lost their sparkle a little though

@thenightsky I read the chalk man and enjoyed it! We clearly have similar taste

Peter Swanson is good especially the Kind worth killing. Also the cara hunter series are very bingeable. Woman in the window is another one.
I keep a kindle wish list and check every day for any books to be 99p.

You may well have read this, but if not, Fingersmith by Sarah Waters. I think it's got everything you like. I don't want to say any more!

CaviarAndCigarettes · 05/04/2021 22:31

@sm40 I do the same! Thank you

@Yeval I haven't and I'm intrigued... thank you

I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes, I found it genuinely unputdownable.

TokenGinger · 05/04/2021 22:34

I recently read Where The Crawdads Sing and it's honestly the best book I have ever read in my life and I don't say that lightly. I am a total bookworm and I just loved it. The start was slow but I'm so glad I stuck with it.

Try Mark Edwards, The Magpies, if you liked Chalk Man.

I LOVE that book

But I hated that

Veterinari · 05/04/2021 22:45

If you like crime fiction try Stuart Macbride

minty133 · 05/04/2021 22:48

Definitely Fingersmith by Sarah Waters!

nursejekyll · 05/04/2021 22:49

10 minutes and 38 seconds in this strange world is a book I have enjoyed and remembered. I read all the time. but often don’t recall the story.

LadyWithLapdog · 05/04/2021 22:51

Another vote for Shuggie Bain. What a book.

Gotenoughthanks · 05/04/2021 22:59

Second vote for I Am Pilgrim. Incredible book!

For crime thrillers, anything by Jeffery Deaver, (first one is the Bone Collector) or go old school and read a bit of Steig Larsson - Girl with the Dragon Tattoo!

hlc123 · 06/04/2021 01:41

Verity by Coleen Hoover, read it in 5 hours!

Also, Lisa Jewell's more recent books - Then She Was Gone, I Found You, The Family Upstairs, Watching You.

Time40 · 06/04/2021 02:02

Fingersmith is great, but Affinity by Sarah Waters is even better. It has a twist that I didn't see coming at all.

KTB19 · 06/04/2021 02:32

I have just started reading 'Til Death Do Us Part' by Daniel Hurst. I am hooked already and didnt want to put the book down.

I got it as a freebie from Bookbub.

StealthRoast · 06/04/2021 14:52

Hello again op @CaviarAndCigarettes I’ve just read the first chapter of The silent patient and am hoping I can get some peace to carry on! Half term plus a 6 month old husky puppy to look after and everyone seems to need constant food. Can’t wait to crack on with it.
