Listened to Roy Orbison's "Crying" this morning, such a sad breakup song. What's your favourite breakup song, one that really gets to your heart?

I have three. More due to the intense nostalgia of my most recent breakup (this is going back years), than the actual lyrics.

The Absence of God (Rilo Kiley)
Does He Love You (also Rilo Kiley), and
Motorcycle Drive By (Third Eye Blind).

All three capture that lovelorn emptiness of a relationship gone sour.

I remember the time I knew I had fallen out of love with my ex and I knew I was going to have to leave him. We were in the car, he was driving, I was gazing out of the window. Coldplay’s “The Scientist” came on. “It’s such a shame for us to part. Nobody said it was easy, no- one ever said it would be this hard.”

Later the same day, the same song was playing in the shop we were wandering around.

I broke up with him a couple of weeks later. I packed up my stuff and he dropped me off at my parents house. As we pulled up outside, wha5pt song was on the radio? Yeah, was a bit of a gut punch, honestly, as we both sat there listening to the words and staring at each other. I still struggle to listen to it.

That Was Yesterday -Foreigner
Breakfast At Tiffany's -Deep Blue Something
Don't Speak -No Doubt
The Flame -Cheap Trick
Someone Like You -Adele

BoringBettie · 03/04/2021 00:53

I came back to add

I don’t love you by My Chemical Romance

I need all of these compiled into one playlist!

whatisthislifesofullofcare · 03/04/2021 00:56

Colin

Same. I lived in a badly converted flat and through the wall some poor sod was going through a breakup at the same time as I was. Whoever s/he was played The Scientist on repeat. It was simultaneously heartrending and comforting. I still have it on a spotify list ‘only to listen to when feeling robust’

RoseParade · 03/04/2021 00:56

Ooh yes @Mistressinthetulips Kayleigh has definitely made me cry more than once or twice!

Freya Ridings - Lost without you
Yes! I only really listened to the lyrics very recently. Cried myself to eyes out.

I would also add:
On and On by The Longpigs
Your House (Forgive Me Love) - Alanis
Both Sides Now - Joni Mitchell
And more recently:
Strange - Celeste
“Strangers to friends, friends into lovers, then strangers again...”
Another one where I didn’t realise how gut wrenching the lyrics were until about the 50th listen.
And lastly - Tin Man by Miranda Lambert. Genius lyrics.
