How do you pronounce the word troll.

Does it rhyme with doll or roll.

I may or may not have been mispronouncing this all my life.

@MummyDummyNow

Reading this thread has made me realise I say it differently for different types. So your classic, loitering under a bridge type troll i rhyme with roll. And your mean person making things up on the internet type troll i rhyme with doll.

No idea why! Grin

Yes. I didn’t realise before this that I can say it either way.
whenthebellsring · 31/03/2021 20:08

Same as control. Hole. Dole. Poll.

Scarby9 · 31/03/2021 20:08

When I was little in the north east it always rhymed with doll.
In my adult life in Yorkshire, I hear it rhyming with roll much more frequently.

gottenhaitch · 31/03/2021 20:09

T-roll.

nancy75 · 31/03/2021 20:10

I feel a bit like I’m going mad reading this, troll, roll & doll all rhyme with each other?

gottenhaitch · 31/03/2021 20:10

Troll to rhyme with doll would be trawl wouldn't it...?

JayAlfredPrufrock · 31/03/2021 20:12

Doll

I had a thread years ago asking this very question as I was listening to a radio play and wondered why they were talking about trowels. Although actually I pronounce that differently as well.

Cannot see how anyone can rhyme doll and roll.

Dollroll · 31/03/2021 20:13

@DramaAlpaca

Troll to rhyme with roll, bowl and hole.

I heard it comes from a fishing term called trolling (rhyming with bowling) where you dangle the fishing rod off the back of a moving boat trying to catch whatever comes by, a bit like internet trolls try to snare people with their made up stories.

Isn't that trawling?

Not where I am. Doll is shorter, trawl is more dragged out, to rhyme with brawl.
Dollroll · 31/03/2021 20:16

I can’t see how doll & roll Don’t rhyme?

Roll as in roll a ball. Or role if you prefer.

MadMadMadamMim · 31/03/2021 20:17

Doll. Is it regional?

I've never heard anyone rhyme it with roll.

Rockdown2020 · 31/03/2021 20:17

Doll (I hope)

nancy75 · 31/03/2021 20:18

Roll a ball does rhyme with Doll...

Dollroll · 31/03/2021 20:19

Yes & doll as in on the dole?

No, doll as in the child's toy.

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 31/03/2021 20:20

As a noun, to rhyme with ‘doll’.

As a verb, to rhyme with ‘role’.

nancy75 · 31/03/2021 20:21

@Dollroll

Yes & doll as in on the dole?

No, doll as in the child's toy.

But you say doll & dole the same? I do anyway!
TheQueef · 31/03/2021 20:21

Trawl more than Troll for internet shenanigans.
Troll for small plastic toy/bridge ogre.

Choice4567 · 31/03/2021 20:21

@YippieKayakOtherBuckets but doll and role
Rhyme?!! I’m so confused

MiddleClassProblem · 31/03/2021 20:21

Doesn’t it depend on your accent?

Dollroll · 31/03/2021 20:22

@TheQueef

Trawl more than Troll for internet shenanigans. Troll for small plastic toy/bridge ogre.
But surely troll on the internet is named after the troll under the bridge?

Language is fascinating.

Not in my RP accent. Where are you from?

‘Doll’ is like the first syllable of ‘holly’.
