I've just read the whole thread. I have no idea what's going on. I didn't want to post on there as they seem to be in some sort of flow and would probably ignore me anyway.

@TakemedowntoPotatoCity not a problem. I just posted it on FB to ruin everyone else’s fun too Grin

I was looking at the latest thread last week and trying to figure it out..

Googled and saw it was a made up game but it does appear to be following some alphabet pattern (with a few letters missing) and a few switches??? So there is more to it than just saying any station name?

winewolfhowls · 26/03/2021 19:30

So you need an actual underground map?

Sounds hard work.

Im up for a game of go Johnny go go go though!

Respectmyauthoritah · 26/03/2021 19:34

Do you need to pick up from the last station mentioned or just name a random one? Do those stations have to actually link together in real life? Or can I take a short hop from Richmond to Lewisham having forgotten one's avocados and Joules' sweater?
@jendifer No way! I thought it was a mumsnet thing.
Same. It wouldn't even have crossed my mind to Google it! I'm so glad you asked OP.

The only "rule" is you can't repeat station names.

I'm almost sure that's not necessarily true.

Perfectly legitimate move.
babbaloushka · 26/03/2021 19:46

Can someone please explain it as simply as possible as I'm so confused !

00100001 · 26/03/2021 19:50

You have to be the first to get to Mornington Crescent.

You do this by declaring which station you're moving to.

You may need to explain your move.

For example you can't directly move from Pimlico to Charing Cross. So you'd have to go there with a Forward Shunt. However,if if it's a Tuesday, the move is invalid no matter what method you use.

Simple?

(It is a nonsense game, with no actual rules, however you are trying to be the first to get to Mornington Crescent)

I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue
VeniVidiWeeWee · 26/03/2021 19:57

@babbaloushka

It's from a radio programme, "I'm Sorry I haven't a clue."

The chairman announces what, entirely fictious rules the game will be played by.

The panel bickers about said fictitious rules.

Players take turns randomly naming tube stations.

The panel bickers about said fictitious rules.

Continue until one panel member says Mornington Crescent and wins.

Cue a funnier part of the show.

It's something we talk about for two minutes with no deviation, hesitation or repetition.
winewolfhowls · 26/03/2021 20:11

God, this whole thread is like a conversation with my nan

Chubbaibu · 26/03/2021 20:19

It's tactical though (adn we really should start adding numbers to each station so we know just how far we are getting...)

You don't want to announce morning crescent too early, but you also want to be the first.

Aknifewith16blades · 26/03/2021 20:22

'Mornington Crescent (a game of complex and subtle rules which, to the uninitiated, sounds like people shouting out tube stations at random)'

tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Radio/ImSorryIHaventAClue

CurlsandCurves · 26/03/2021 20:23

Sounds like Numberwang!

FadedRed · 26/03/2021 20:24

And you can get extra points (and what do points mean?) if you sing one station name to the tune of another.

FadedRed · 26/03/2021 20:25

Or accompany yourself on the kazoo or the Swanee whistle.

picklemewalnuts · 26/03/2021 20:26

The key to the game is in knowing exactly when to arrive at Mornington Crescent. Too soon, and the game is prematurely and unsatisfactorily over. Too slow and it risks becoming boring and past it.

Like most passtimes really. No one wants to come too soon or stay too long.

multivac · 26/03/2021 20:29

@wizzywig

Me neither and there's one called AD's. No idea what that is either
ADs is a bunch of people who initially got together to 'escape from' - and mock - people on Mumsnet who took the pandemic too seriously for their liking, back in the first lockdown. It stands for 'anti dementors', which is what they call people who don't think that we should just lock up the over 60s and people with, say, diabetes, so the rest of us can jolly well get on with our lives. Because it's just a mild illness. For anyone who matters.
FiveGoMadInDorset · 26/03/2021 20:32

I love Mornington Crescent, get so excited when I went to the station last year, pre Covid, never felt brave enough to join in the thread here so may give it a whirl

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 26/03/2021 20:37

This thread disappoints me. Knowing about the game of games aka Mornington Crescent is something that should be on the national curriculum. Far more important than knowing the fate of the six wives of Henry VIII or the chemical composition of salt, I suggest.

Some of the best games on MN have lasted for several months.

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 26/03/2021 20:43

I love I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue. DP doesn't get it.

Mornington Crescent is not as good as one song to the tune of another, but it's good.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 26/03/2021 20:46

The several month game of games that was a particular highlight in I believe 2018 had 994 moves if I recall correctly.
