What have you recently realised that’s made you feel like a bit of an idiot?

Mine is that I didn’t know you shouldn’t flush tampons down the toilet...... I swear I remember my mother telling me I could when I first started using them, and that’s what I’ve done for 14 years! It was only through a conversation with a friend (about whether you empty your bathroom bin before the cleaner comes.....) and subsequent google that I’ve found out you shouldn’t.....

So, what have you have you learnt recently that you definitely should have known before?

I was always told that "mind your Ps and Qs" stood for Pints and Quarts but I never understood what pints and quarts had got to do with manners so I would welcome an alternative explanation.

Crikeyblimey · 16/03/2021 18:24

Nobody has mentioned that pineapples don’t grow from trees yet.
Perhaps everyone now knows this 🤷‍♀️

SplendidSuns1000 · 16/03/2021 18:25

It's 'dippy egg and soldiers', not 'dippy egg and shoulders' ... I wish I was kidding.

HandyBendySandy · 16/03/2021 18:25

I always get irked about the king size duvet thing and the "horizontal lines" - my king size duvet has perfectly even squares, so that doesn't help me in the least! I have to position the label in the bottom left hand corner of mine every time.

🤣🤣🤣 LOVE it!!

Until my early thirties I thought Sherlock Holmes was real..My then dp(now dh) said "you do realise Sherlock Holmes is not real right" when I asked him if "Sherlock Street" was where Sherlock actually lived 🤦‍♀️

Just googled this! Hahah, I thought they grew on trees like coconuts! Defo not kidding so thanks for that... 😂😂

In boxing, ‘seconds out’ means it’s time for the fighter’s support team to leave the ring... not that it’s only a little while left before the bell rings (although, that too I guess!)

Mehtothemeh · 16/03/2021 18:34

@mackerelontoast What about Tombliboos?

doodlejump1980 · 16/03/2021 18:34

I always add my revelation to threads like this. I was 35 when I found out that capers weren’t tiny fish. 🤦🏻‍♀️

RedRec · 16/03/2021 18:35

I only recently found out about The Elgin Marbles and Nights in White Satin too (and have never seen the Elgin Marbles thing mentioned on here before).

GabsAlot · 16/03/2021 18:36

i always flushed tampons in my teens twenties because the box said so

There is a theory that if you had a bar tab open, you'd have to watch that your pints and quarts were correctly noted, and that you didn't pay more than you owed.
@VerityWibbleWobble

I recently upgraded from a king to a super king duvet. Kept putting my duvet in the duvet covers wondering why the duvet doesn’t got properly, only to realise I now have to put the duvet in with the lines going horizontally not vertically. 🤷🏼‍♀️
THATS why my duvet keeps trying to escape the cover! goes to change the bed

lifeinlimbo2020 · 16/03/2021 18:41

@VerityWibbleWobble

I was today years old last week when I found out that king/super king size duvets aren't square and that's why it doesn't always fit properly in the cover. And yes I actually went and measured Blush
@VerityWibbleWobble omg. I have had a king size duvet for thirty years and never knew there is a 5cm difference. It must be total fluke this has never cropped up before as it was only last week it wouldn't lay properly and I just assumed the 100% brushed cotton cover must've shrunk in the dryer 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
notmethenwho · 16/03/2021 18:42

I've never even heard of Elgin's marbles.

Stovetopespresso · 16/03/2021 18:47

i always knew how to do the miles per hour sums at school, but I had no idea until about 6 years ago that irl if you went at 60 to somewhere 60 miles away, it would take you ...60 minutes iyswim.

MingeOnFire · 16/03/2021 18:48

That the Tombliboos' names Un, Ooh and Ee are a play on one, two, three. I've only been watching ITNG for 15 years!

I didn't know that!

I also only found out this year that they are haahoos, not haaboos. Oldest DS is 17!

lifeinlimbo2020 · 16/03/2021 18:48

Nor me 😳
Mochudubh · 16/03/2021 18:50

When the Stranglers' song No More Heroes came out, I heard the line about Trotsky and the "ice pick that made his ears burn" and pictured an ice axe like mountaineers use. Then someone at school said it was an ice pick like Americans use to chop up big chunks of ice for drinks and I believed that for years.

Just this week I googled Trotsky for some reason and he really was killed with a mountaineers ice axe. I was misled for about 40 years.
@haggistramp All my duvets are stitched in squares so have lines in both directions. (M&S king size feather and down).
One side has 6 squares and the other side 7. I only realised this last time I changed our bed. I've been trying to find out if the long side goes top to bottom or side to side but can't find a definitive answer.
Doesn't seem to make any difference to the fit of the cover!
The longer side goes to the side. If you fold your duvet cover cover into a triangle you will see that the side with the buttons is shorter, that is the foot of the bed.

WestendVBroadway · 16/03/2021 18:56

@doodlejump1980, my DH (aged 67) asked me only yesterday if capers were like small fish like anchovies!

FamilyOfAliens · 16/03/2021 18:57

@FunTimes2020

I've never heard of "I was today years old". It makes no sense to me!
That’s because it doesn’t makes sense to anyone. But most people prefer to just go along with it, like many made-up expressions.
doodlejump1980 · 16/03/2021 19:04

@WestendVBroadway so glad it’s not just me! (I did ask my DH, however, how they caught them as they would need a net with tiny holes so they wouldn’t go through the gaps. He laughed at me for hours).

Monr0e · 16/03/2021 19:09

My DM ( honest guv) thought toads were boys and frogs were girls until she was in her thirties. Kermit the frog was an anomaly apparently 🐸
