What have you recently realised that’s made you feel like a bit of an idiot?

Mine is that I didn’t know you shouldn’t flush tampons down the toilet...... I swear I remember my mother telling me I could when I first started using them, and that’s what I’ve done for 14 years! It was only through a conversation with a friend (about whether you empty your bathroom bin before the cleaner comes.....) and subsequent google that I’ve found out you shouldn’t.....

So, what have you have you learnt recently that you definitely should have known before?

@Timestablesaretables it's to prevent liquids from "superheating", apparently they can occasionally boil from the bottom and as soon as the cup is moved it boils over which would scald you.

The Q's in "P's and Q's" are from "Thank you's". Just never really thought about it before until I heard someone say it yesterday.

I discovered today that there is another route out of the carpark at my children's school. It saved me about 10 minutes on the journey home. I've had at least one child in the school since 2009 and had no idea there was an alternative exit.

I recently upgraded from a king to a super king duvet. Kept putting my duvet in the duvet covers wondering why the duvet doesn’t got properly, only to realise I now have to put the duvet in with the lines going horizontally not vertically. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I recently discovered that The Hague is a city. I always thought it was a building, like our houses of parliament.

Related to that, Holland and The Netherlands are not interchangeable.

Holland is part of The Netherlands, but is not all of it and there are some other parts too.

It wasn't till I was in my 40s that I realised why bread didn't fit together neatly when making sandwiches. I used to trim off the mismatched edges.
Then one day it dawned on me ,. -. Turn the 2nd slice over,. It then matches up neatly

Mid 30s here and I just learnt that you are not meant to wash your face in the shower with hot water...but I can't help myself. It feels wrong not to wash my face whilst showering!!

I've no idea why we taught that it was called Holland at school. it's like Americans calling Britain England.

I also recently discovered when you snap your fingers, it's not the "snap" of your fingers that makes the noise. It's your middle finger hitting your palm.

Apparently you supposed to wash your face with cold / lukewarm water (after you've had your shower) as hot water is bad for the thinner skin of the face, it dries it out more, leading to problematic skin. Oh an also, that's why you are supposed to shower facing AWAY from the water, which just simply baffles me 🤣

Only within the last year or so (I’m 49) have I clocked that the song isn’t Knights In White Satin. It’s Nights. Which makes far more sense as satin would be a really shit substitute for armour. 🤦‍♀️

I was 35 years old when I learnt that Narwhals are in fact not mythical beasts! I always thought they were the marine equivalent of unicorns.

Tampons shouldn’t be flushed because they don’t break down, so added to everything else that doesn’t break down they contribute to fatbergs blocking the sewer system.

I was also told to flush them when I was 14, mid fifties now.

Well that might explain why my skin has become even worse the last couple of years... as we moved to a house with a decent shower so I switched from baths!

No you aren't, they aren't degradable and just add to the fatbergs/wipe mountains that are inside our sewerage system.
Next time you go to flush one, think about the actual human being that has to remove all that disgusting bio waste - often by hand and by standing in amongst it. Vile 🤢

Moolan I thought that too! I first heard of narwhals in one of the Futurama movies, so I assumed it was one of the many made up creatures. Then I saw Frozen Planet on BBC and my mind was blown :o
