What have you recently realised that’s made you feel like a bit of an idiot?

Mine is that I didn’t know you shouldn’t flush tampons down the toilet...... I swear I remember my mother telling me I could when I first started using them, and that’s what I’ve done for 14 years! It was only through a conversation with a friend (about whether you empty your bathroom bin before the cleaner comes.....) and subsequent google that I’ve found out you shouldn’t.....

So, what have you have you learnt recently that you definitely should have known before?

I was 30 and my jaw dropped when I saw a sheep with a long tail. I always thought the short scuts were how they naturally are.

Riddo · 18/03/2021 06:56

@2020iscancelled Me too, lefty loosey makes so much more sense than lefty Lucy 😂.

I thought that Rio Ferdinand was a football team 😳

When I found out that Living La Vida Loca means Livin The Crazy Life. Blew my mind after all these years hearing the song 😂

@CallMeCleo

I found out only last week that if you use the Snipping Tool you don't have to save the snip as an image, you can just "paste" it, because as soon as you snip it's held on your clipboard.

Been using a computer for many years!

Oh my gosh, my son showed me the snipping tool about three weeks ago and it revolutionised my life! I didn't know it existed! My son said "yeh I forget that you grew up without computers Mum" and I felt about a hundred!

There are sheep with long tails that get shortened to avoid certain parasites in that area of their bodies and there are others which have a naturally short tails.

(DD did work experience on a sheep farm.)

SingToTheSky · 18/03/2021 07:28

Koko the preview of your post on Threads I’m On ended at “...sheep with a long”

I thought you were going to say “neck” - as in, a sheep with a long neck, as you didn’t know llamas were a thing.

:o

I had no idea about their tails either FWIW!

@Naticus

Last week I discovered that Mini babybel are indeed mini versions and you can buy giant Babybels 🤯
Whaaat!!!
Dinkydody · 18/03/2021 07:52

I’d never heard of it either and thought it was a typo.🤷‍♀️

EvilOnion · 18/03/2021 07:57

@Ineke they're a fictional trio of "dolls" in a acid house production program called In the Night Garden.

I've never found full size Babybel in the UK but have had in Spain and France, I assumed they weren't available here! It is essentially just a chunk of Edam though isn't it?

Tomasinabombadil · 18/03/2021 07:57

@CallMeCleo

I recently found out that sand and pebbles are exactly the same stuff. Sand is just pebbles that have been ground down really tiny.

Who knew this?

Not all sand is made from pebbles.........

Found in Hawaii, Iceland, the Canary Islands and other destinations around the world, BLACK SAND BEACHES form over time by the erosion of volcanic minerals and lava fragments combined with the ebb and flow of the ocean's tide.

The famous WHITE SAND BEACHES of Hawaii, for example, actually come from the poop of parrotfish. The fish bite and scrape algae off of rocks and dead corals with their parrot-like beaks, grind up the inedible calcium-carbonate reef material (made mostly of coral skeletons) in their guts, and then excrete it as sand.

🙂🙂🙂

You've just reminded me of many years ago when my DM thought that an upcoming Lennox Lewis fight was a boxing match between a Mr Lennox and a Mr Lewis 😄
@mintlampshade I do shower facing away from the water I thought everyone did 👀
I face the shower head. I first rinse and wash my face, then change the angle slightly so the water doesn't get directly in my face, but my neck / chest. I must be the odd one out then...😅

GrumpySausage · 18/03/2021 08:31

Me too @mintlampshade!

I remember back in about 2012 I was in the car listening to the radio with DH and they kept talking about who was going to be in the cricket 2020 team. I said to DH that surely it was a bit soon to be picking a team for an event 8 years away. I didn’t realise it was a type of cricket 😬

thenovice · 18/03/2021 09:53

DH recently realised that it was Custer's last stand and that he was not General Custard.Blush

I've only managed to find them on Amazon 😔

@Threewicks

Foals drank from their mother, milk, have never seen udders/ teats on a mare!
Eh?
ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 18/03/2021 10:55

It was only in the last year that I learned the word segue was pronounced “seg-way”. I had seen and heard it in various contexts, but never together! In my head a segue (rhyming with league) was a smoother transition, whereas a “seg-way” was clunkier Blush

Why was that something that would be surprising? Or are you using blew my mind ironically, I can't see how that would be anything more than a "meh, I didn't know the Spanish for crazy life"

There are a few on the thread I don't understand, also the foal one, can you explain please @peakygal and @Threewicks

wofs · 18/03/2021 11:56

P's and Q's means Pints and Quarts - i.e. mind your drinks, be careful don't spill them!

They 100% do have teats - right at the back, at least my mare does!
SleepingStandingUp · 18/03/2021 12:29

@Threewicks

Do you mean you never realised that foals drank milk from their mother as you had never seen tests or udders upon a mare? How did you think they got fed?

LockdownIsDragging · 18/03/2021 12:40

@Threewicks

But drinking milk from their mums is the definition of a mammal, so everything from Aardvarks to zebras does it.
