What have you recently realised that’s made you feel like a bit of an idiot?

Mine is that I didn’t know you shouldn’t flush tampons down the toilet...... I swear I remember my mother telling me I could when I first started using them, and that’s what I’ve done for 14 years! It was only through a conversation with a friend (about whether you empty your bathroom bin before the cleaner comes.....) and subsequent google that I’ve found out you shouldn’t.....

So, what have you have you learnt recently that you definitely should have known before?

I'm guessing there aren't many University Challenge contestants on here...

@BluTangClan

The Q's in "P's and Q's" are from "Thank you's". Just never really thought about it before until I heard someone say it yesterday.
I never knew this!!

@VerityWibbleWobble

I was today years old last week when I found out that king/super king size duvets aren't square and that's why it doesn't always fit properly in the cover. And yes I actually went and measured Blush
Yes i learnt that last year after changing other people's beds for years and years. I had only ever had a double duvet. You really have to remember where the label needs to go or you fall into duvet hell trying to make it fit. Once you know this it is a no-brainer. Now i have a kingsize duvet my tip is to buy a cheap cover (mine is a plain one from Asda) put that on the duvet then your chosen duvet cover over it. Then you always know which way round it goes and it keeps it cleaner ! I still wonder at how easy a king size duvet fits in once you know it's not square - which i guess was common knowledge to most people in the first place.

Has anyone mentioned yet that Timbuktu is a real, non-mythical place, and it’s in west Africa?

delightfuldaisy19 · 17/03/2021 20:31

Late 20s - raisins are dried grapes.

Oh shit ! 😧😂 I never really thought about the shape but also never really thought about that fact that it needs to go on the correct way or of course it won’t fit into the cover correctly !!

What is 42 uses of a puff I don’t get it!

poppycat10 · 17/03/2021 20:43

The 42 uses of a puff reminds me of when I went to the hygienist and she would tell me to "rinse on the left". The drink was on the left, I thought she meant rinse on the left hand side Grin

I have been to Portsmouth but thought it was on a peninsula. Have just checked the OS map and you are right. I need to be more observant when on bridges!

As for discovering a new way out of the school I wonder how many people have found new paths they never knew existed in lockdown.

And yes you used to be able to tear up a sanitary towel and throw it in the bin but please don't do it now!

poppycat10 · 17/03/2021 20:44

Not bin, loo!

janj2301 · 17/03/2021 20:49

Once you find the long side on your duvet make a small mark on it with a permanent marker for next time!!

BitterestPill · 17/03/2021 20:55

I didnt realise until last week that the different colour peppers arent different types of pepper it's just that the Green ones arent ripe and the Red ones are fully ripe and the Yellow and Orange fall between the two! Now I know, of course it makes so much sense because the Red peppers are obviously so much sweeter!

My husband thought islands float in the sea. He also thought leaves started to fall off the trees in the autumn because of the darker afternoons when the clocks changed. He has two degrees and went to Oxford University for postgrad.....
Mind you, I thought there was a football team called Hulkingstone Rovers.

BLTLover · 17/03/2021 21:02

Do islands not float in the sea? Are they connected to other land underneath the water?

CallMeCleo · 17/03/2021 21:03

I recently found out that sand and pebbles are exactly the same stuff. Sand is just pebbles that have been ground down really tiny.

Who knew this?

janj2301 · 17/03/2021 21:03

try "thetruesize.com" you can pick up and move countries around the world comparing them to other countries

Minniem2020 · 17/03/2021 21:06

Not really the same thing but this is reminding me of the time DSS who was probably around 8 at the time turned round deadly serious and said "well everyone knows that dolphins are just girl sharks"

What would stop them from moving around the world if they weren’t? Confused All land masses are islands, some are just smaller than others!
Naticus · 17/03/2021 21:09

Last week I discovered that Mini babybel are indeed mini versions and you can buy giant Babybels 🤯

They're connected to the sea bed. If you walked out from say Dover along the sea floor you'd get deeper and deeper underwater and then less so and less so until you came up in France.
SleepingStandingUp · 17/03/2021 21:11

All land masses are islands, some are just smaller than others! Technically no where is an island, some bits are just above or below the sea

That stool softeners are not to make your bar stool comfier to sit on 😳 😆

Doremisofarsogood · 17/03/2021 21:27

@Moolan

I was 35 years old when I learnt that Narwhals are in fact not mythical beasts! I always thought they were the marine equivalent of unicorns.
I found this out last week whilst watching David Attenborough. I'm 44 next month....
Queenie24 · 17/03/2021 21:34

@nestlestealswater

I also recently discovered when you snap your fingers, it's not the "snap" of your fingers that makes the noise. It's your middle finger hitting your palm.

When I read this I literally didn't believe you Grin now I'm sat watching my fingers snap like a total twat!

I've been doing the same 🤣
vestastilly · 17/03/2021 21:40

I was at least mid thirties when I realised that a labotomy was not a dirty sex act! As in the saying - you need a labotomy if you think that!!!

What is 42 uses of a puff I don’t get it!
So the shower gel claimed on it '41 uses with puff' and of course, as I worked out a few showers later, it was highlighting that it would go further if used on a puff - you could get 41 uses/washes out of it.

But I was racking my brains to understand because I was thinking...surely, there is only one possible 'use' for the gel and puff together...ie. washing yourself...what on earth could the other 40 uses possibly be?

To be fair I was likely sleep deprived and hung over for many showers during university.
